Q. Summarise what you did in this activity/project and how you interacted with others?
A. I was appointed as treasurer of Science National Honour Society and my job was to maintain the financial record of the activities and project which was held in the club. The club has 30+ members ranging from grades 9-12 based on their merit and GPA standing which should be above 3.5 points.
Q. Explain what you hoped to accomplish through this activity/project?
A. I hoped that by participating in this activity, I would be able to improve my creative and social abilities. I learned how to handle transaction data and how to write a sponsorship proposal. I aimed to inspire students to conduct scientific projects out of pure curiosity and to give them with any necessary financial assistance.
Q. How successful were you in achieving your goals? What difficulties did you encounter and how did you overcome them?
A. Our initial action was to create a research magazine. Members were requested to write an essay on any topic relating to science. It was tough to get the participants to participate in the events and submit their work on time. Most of the time, schoolwork got in the way of our deadlines. This was, however, a chance for the members to improve their time management skills and become more balanced learners. We were quite severe about deadlines and criteria, so members do not take the SNHS lightly. We want to hold additional activities next semester when students return to in-person school.
Q. What did you learn about yourself and others through this activity/project? What abilities, attitudes, and values have you developed?
A. While working with others to address a problem, I learned to be open to their views. I discovered that fighting and being obstinate would not always get you what you desire. This practise helped me improve my time management, social, thinking, and communication abilities. This practise helped me become more courteous, compassionate, open-minded, and balanced. Through this exercise, I got to know more individuals and their ways of thinking. It might be difficult to be a leader at times because you may doubt your own actions and methods of dealing with problems. To be a successful leader, though, you must retain an open mind and listen to recommendations.
Q. How did this activity/project benefit others?
A. This experience benefited me rather than others since it provided me with the opportunity to meet new people and find that many of us have same interests.
Q. How can you apply what you have learned in other life situations?
A. I gained so much knowledge about collaboration and my cognitive process grew as a result of this exercise, which will benefit me in future situations when I will need to develop and run an organisation. The skills I gained from this exercise will help me work better in groups in the future.
