Google Takeout for Graduates

Congratulations! You're graduating and the next part of your life is beginning... however, now that you will no longer be an enrolled student at the Kern High School District, you're going to need to grab all of your hard work you've put into Google Drive over the last several years. You never know when your old work might come in handy for your future or just in case you want to look back at how far you've come.

To make sure you save your work once your account has been closed at the district you'll need to use a handy Google tool called Google Takeout! This allows you to transfer your work from your school account to your personal account.

You will need a personal Google Account in order to use this tool - it is strongly advised that you make one even if it is only to save your work! Here's a link on how to do that. You will need to use a personal device or a school DESKTOP computer. Chromebooks will not allow you to log into a personal account.

How to Use Google Takeout

Because you will be using a personal Google account for several steps during this process, you will also need to use 1) a personal device, 2) a school desktop computer, or 3) a public device that allows for signing into a personal Google account. You will not be able to use a Kern High School District Owned Chromebook to complete this process. Students are unable to sign into personal Google accounts on School Chromebooks.

Here is a video that will walk you through the steps below.

Step 1: Go to Google Takeout

(Make sure you have a personal Google Account)

First, sign out of your personal Google account and go to takeout.google.com/transfer.

Step 2: Sign Into Student Google Account

If you're already signed into your student account, it should automatically detect that and send you to Step 3. However, if your device recognizes you have multiple Google Accounts, it will ask you to select one - make sure you select your uid#@kernhigh.org account.

Log in using your password, if needed.

Step 3: Enter a Destination

The next screen will ask you to "Enter a destination account" - this is where you put your personal gmail address - accountname@gmail.com. It has to be a Google account, this will not work with any other type of email address.

If you haven't made a personal account yet, you may do so here by clicking where it says "Don't have a Google account? Create account."

Click "SEND CODE"

Step 4: Verify Your Account

Once you click the "SEND CODE" button an email will be sent to your personal gmail account find the email from Google titled, "Verify your account" and click the blue Get confirmation code button.

You'll need to go to gmail.com while logged into your personal gmail account, or find the email in the gmail app on your personal device.

This will take you to a new tab with an 8 digit code on it.

Step 5: Enter Code

Copy the confirmation code (select and hit ctrl+C to copy), then click "CONTINUE."

Sign back in to your school account.

Enter the code on the "Enter code" line (select the box and hit ctrl+V to paste)

Click "VERIFY"

Step 6: Select Transfer Files

On the last screen you can select to transfer files from your Drive, Gmail, or both by toggling the switches so that they are blue.

(You might also want to verify all the email addresses are correct, you should be transferring from a @kernhigh.org account TO a @gmail.com account).

Once you have chosen which apps to transfer over, click "START TRANSFER"

This process can take several hours to several days to complete - but you can safely close everything and even turn your computer off - everything happens online and there's no need to  leave the window open once you've clicked "START TRANSFER."
