My name is Jesse Dotson, and I am the Precision Machine Trades Instructor at the Salem High School. I graduated from the same program that I now instruct in 2015.
The Precision Machine Trades Program is a course that is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills that they need in order to leave school and be able to obtain full times jobs as machinist. Students can also take this knowledge and go further with it as they endeavor to learn Engineering, Machine Programming, Manufacturing Operations, and much more.

YouTube - YouTube provides a wide variety of instructional and entertaining videos that students can enjoy and learn from. (Pictured to the left is a video from actor and maker Adam Savage about his injury related to machines that students will be using.)
Google Classroom - Google Classroom is an incredible resource for teachers of all kinds to help organize classes and present assignments, projects and quizzes to students.
CareerSafe - CareerSafe's OSHA 10 training course allows students to acquire industry recognized safety certifications entirely online.
OSHA - OSHA's website provides the needed safety information that we require in order to keep students safe at all times in the Machine Shop Environment.
Tinkercad - Tinkercad is a website that allows student to explore 3D modeling in the web browser without the need for external applications. This is Incredibly useful for students on Chromebooks.
Keep It Simple - No one knows your students better than you, and you know what your students are capable and willing to do. So don't overwhelm your students, give them small chunks of assignments that they can work on slow so you don't wear them out.
Hold Students Accountable - Students need to know that what is expected from them up front. Let students know what they need to do and how they need to do it and hold them accountable for doing so.
Be In Contact - Make sure you are keeping in contact with students and families. Let students know when they are missing assignments and work with students and families to sort things out. Keeping in contact also lets students know that you are interested in them and their wellbeing.
Keep Things Entertaining - Students love a good entertaining video or the like. Mix things up every now and then and throw in something for them to watch or to laugh at, it will go a long way towards keeping your students interested and motivated.
Encourage Students To Work - If your students have not already gotten a job outside of school then encourage them to do so. If students have accepted jobs, especially in the Machining Trade, encourage them to share work experiences with others when they can.
Working with the stakeholders in the CTSO and the advisory committee is something very important to the program. The advisory committee and the CTSO can work together to ensure that the students are receiving the information and the skill that they need the most when going out into the job field. The advisory committee provides feedback on what employees in their companies are lacking and how the Precision Machine Trades program can aid and improve on that so that students can have the best possible outcome as they are searching for jobs.
