Hello my name is Noah Daniels-Wilder. I am one out of two teachers for Choffin’s Career and Technical school’s Journalism department in Youngstown, Ohio. The Journalism program is coming up on it’s second year at Choffin. This is my second year teaching as well. I used to work as a news reporter at WKBN in Youngstown, Ohio. I was on air, edited videos, recorded videos, and anchored. I was at the news station for a year before I switched to teaching. I love to help the students and give them an opportunity that I wish I had back in High School.
1. Zoom- I will say this helps out a lot! You are able to meet with your whole class. You can have it where the students only speak in the comment section or they can participate as if it was an actual class room. I also love this resource because you can break the class up into discussion groups and have them talk to only the ones in their group for a set amount of time. After the set amount of time you can then rejoin everyone into one big zoom call again.
2. Kahoot- This is a resource we used in the classroom as well. It is a fun and competitive way to get the students to study the material and have fun doing it. The resource allows you to create questions and answers specifically for your class material. This would be a great review for a test.
3. Flipgrid- Flipgrid is another amazing resource because it allows the students to feel like they are using social media like Instagram but in a school setting. You get to post videos and responses on the resource. It also come in application form for your smart phone. It is great for group collaboration.
4. Screencast-O-Matic This resource is used frequently when we have full lessons that need to be taught. We record our PowerPoint while we are talking. The students hear our voice and see the PowerPoint slides. This allows us to have a pre-recorded lesson that students are able to go back and listen to.
5. Adobe Premiere Share Work Space- This allows us as teachers see in real time how the students are editing. We can help them out if they need it. We can show them what they might have missed in the actual editing phase. Instead of looking at the video and trying to explain how to edit over email or zoom.
1. Having Weekly Agendas
Having weekly agendas is very important so that you can schedule and be prepared for any videos you may have to make for the students. This way you can provide as much help and instruction without missing any instructional opportunity. It also gives the students ample amount of time to complete each assignment. They are able to stay organized better as well.
2. Be Firm
In news meeting deadline is crucial. It could make or break your career. We understand things happen however, multiple late assignments/missed deadlines cannot be acceptable. We want our students to succeed in any field they choose. Meeting deadline is important in life
3. Online Weekly Meetings/ Check In’s
You must have online weekly meetings with the class to at least see how they are doing with their project. This keeps the students on track while also pushing them to get more done. This is what we would do in person so it just has to switch over to online.
4. Use Youtube
We used YouTube in the classroom. This helps with learning because the students can rewind the video and learn from people other than us as teachers. This gives them a little refresher.
5. HAVE FUN
Remember to have fun with the lessons and the students. Too much stress weighs down on you and the students
Skills USA Students: Choffin has a whole committee dedicated to Skills USA as our CTSO. In Journalism we do not have a regional competition. We only have a state wide competition. That means our students go straight to the state competition for Skills USA. We planned to go this year however, the Corona Virus happened. We also do a nationwide competition called Student Television Network. Where the students go an compete for the best produced news story
Advisory Members: Our advisory committee consists of people currently in the news industry. They come in to speak to the class, teach them some industry techniques, and network with them. They also invite us to their news station and a chance to follow them throughout the day. They also give them recommendations when they need it for anything. They advisory committee is very involved with the program and helping students outside of school.
