Hello! My name is Scott Berry and I am one of the criminal justice instructors at the Medina County Career Center in Medina, Ohio. The criminal justice program is new to Medina County Career Center and this was the first year of the program, as well as my first year. I spent 16 years in the field of law enforcement as a juvenile probation officer, juvenile corrections officer, adult probation officer, and U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force Officer. I jumped into the field of career technical education in 2019 because I found that the only I love more than the field of criminal justice is teaching it!
Google Classroom - This has to be number one because when it came down to all online classes this was the all inclusive, one-stop for my online schooling needs!
Google Meet - This was the best way (and the only school approved method) of staying in touch with my students. Getting to see them multiple times a week for check-ins was valuable beyond words for both myself and the students.
Kahoots (https://kahoot.com/ ) - This was an extremely fun way for the students to use repetition for studying the online content and I believe it dramatically helped with test scores and mastery.
Edulastic (https://edulastic.com/ ) - If Google Classroom is the one-stop for online classes then Edulastic is the one-stop for online exams and testing. This website does it all in the way of testing and it does it very well!
Flipgrid (https://info.flipgrid.com/ ) - This is a resource I used a lot to allow students to see and interact with each other, as well as do presentations. The students loved it and it really has a social media feel to it so it was a huge hit and very easy to use and implement.
It is very important to remain firm, fair, and consistent in the classroom. This will set appropriate boundaries and keep any discipline or correction even across the board.
Honor and Integrity are stressed to the utmost in the criminal justice classroom and that is because the students must understand the responsibility and power that comes with a badge.
I am passionate about the field of criminal justice and having worked in the field for nearly my entire working life, I have developed strong opinions and stances. That being said, it is important to present the material and content of criminal justice without bias and objectively.
While I do maintain and objective stance in the classroom, I do let my passion shine through and the students need to see that and feel that sense of passion about the material and content being taught.
Due to the nature of the material taught in the criminal justice program I always treat the students like adults because I expect them to act like adults in the program and conduct themselves appropriately during the adult subject matter they will be exposed to in the program. The students absolutely rise to this expectation and appreciate being treated like adults, which directly affects their behavior and the effort they put forth.
Don't be afraid to use humor in the classroom. I use humor often and always appropriately. The students enjoy the humor and it really helps in building relationships and rapport with the students, which I feel is essential in career technical education, especially a criminal justice program.
The criminal justice community is a very tight-knit community. It is a family. That being said, we at the Medina County Career Center Criminal Justice Program work closely with our stakeholders. The Criminal Justice Advisory Board is an essential piece of our program and the support and networking that are prevalent as a direct result of this board has already begun benefiting our students, even in the first year. Our board members are regular guest speakers in the criminal justice program and we have been able to plug them in to multiple areas to assist in the program and the student's education. Although this was the first year of this program, we were honored to host Skills USA at Medina County Career Center. Our students jumped right in to train and compete, in year one and with limited knowledge of criminal justice, and the students did not just compete but they excelled. WE participated in 3 event and took gold in one and bronze in another. Skills USA also asked our program to travel to Columbus for the State Skills USA Competition to conduct the security for the event. This did not end up coming to fruition due to Covid19 shutting schools down at the end of the year but it was an honor and privilege to be asked to do this, especially considering how new our program was.
