Mrs. Brandel's Message
Dear Falcon Families,
Congratulations on a wonderful first 9 weeks of the school year! We are off to a great start of the year and deep into learning, growing, and building upon the tradition of excellence at Florence Elementary School!
This has been an especially fun week, as our 1st grade students shined on stage Monday night as they taught the audience all about US history and dazzled with their singing and public speaking talents! On Tuesday, we celebrated our Fun Run success with our student blasting our admin team with water balloons during recess! I can now say that I have had over 500 water balloons lobbed and that we definitely have some students with some strong throwing arms! Our book fair has been all packed up and we are grateful for the support and passion for reading that was shared by our community! Our 3rd and 4th grade students have been practicing their conversational skills through the Campus Shake program which is conducted through theatre. Today, our students were all dressed to impressed and gave their biggest grins to the camera for picture day! Our PTA board met and continued to plan more activities and opportunities to support our school with events, equipment, campus needs, and support of our teachers and students. I am so grateful for the work and time that our PTA spends with us each day! I have loved seeing all of our parents who have come in and out over these last few weeks for conferences and appreciate your partnership with our teachers in your child's learning.
This week, in the classrooms, our teachers have been guiding our students deeper into learning, and continuing to support their needs through their units! We are already seeing growth in their abilities and have a firm foundation for another successful 9-weeks ahead!
What a wonderful treat to be able to enjoy the change in weather, the new season and to celebrate and recharge after an action-packed August and September! I hope that you all have a wonderful, fun, safe, and family filled fall break! We will see everyone back here on October 16th!

Kindergarten Instructional Spotlight
Our youngest Falcons begin their learning experience at Florence with a focus on foundational reading and mathematics skills that will set them up for success! Our teachers plan collaboratively and align our instruction with our district's curriculum guides in order to provide consistent, research based, and individualized instruction. We value an emphasis on developing a solid understanding of phonological awareness as the foundation to support their ability to decode (read), encode (write), and later comprehend the words that they are reading. Through repetition, practice, and exposure through a variety of activities, our teachers support these foundational skills. Students remain engaegd through a variety of learning experiences that incorparate movement, games, conversation, technology, and student activity. Our teachers provide guidance through modeling, guided practice, collaborative practice, independent practice, and ultimately a variety of formal and informal assessment to track students' progress with new skills over time. We are so proud of the ways in which our kindergarten students participate, enage, and are taking ownership in following classroom expectations!
Working in phonological Awareness
Our kindergarten class have been working on their letters and the sounds that they make! This week, they focused on writing both upper case and lowercase letter "Ff" and completed their phonological awareness lessons that support them in their foundation for reading and writing through our Heggerty program.

KinderGARTEN Centers
Our kindergarten classrooms keep our students engaged through a variety of learning opportunities. Studnets rotate through centers to practice differnet concepts and to engage in problem solving through creative building.
Kindergarten Centers
Our kindergarten students spend a few minutes a day working to utilize our Dreambox platform, which is an adaptive individualized game that provides scaffolding and support for learners to practice new skills and to review previous concepts.
Kindergarten Centers
Our kindergarten classes utlize a variety of hands on tools to see and experience mathematical concepts that will build a concrete foundation for mathematical understanding. Here, they are playing a dice game to begin the concept of adding.
Fun Run Celebration!
On Tuesday, we celebrated our fun run success with water balloons during recess. Here's the kicker- they could only throw them at the school's administration! Our students had a blast soaking their principal, assistant principal, and counselor! Our top 5 earning students had an extra time where they got to burst some balloons on top of the administrators' heads! It was a fun way to celebrate all the fun(draising) we had through Booster!

Mrs. Harmon
"I want to highlight Mrs. Harmon’s incredible dedication to our school community. Recently, when the teacher asked parents for sports schedules, Mrs. Harmon not only responded promptly but also went above and beyond. She attended (our student's) midday soccer game in the scorching sun, and not just that – she watched another soccer game before his, spending a total of 2 hours cheering for different kids on a Saturday. What sets Mrs. Harmon apart is her genuine kindness. When (our student) needed help tying his shoe during the first quarter, Mrs. Harmon volunteered, (our student) saw her and said, "Mrs. Harmon, what are you doing here?" Mrs. Harmon actions exemplify her dedication and community spirit. - FES parent
Mrs. Anderson
"I’ve never seen Mrs. Anderson without a smile on her face. She is always smiling, waving (in the car line), or radiating positivity. She is one of the nicest people I have ever met and her upbeat personality brings out the better person in everyone she encounters." - FES Parent

⭕Red Ribbon Month
Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign that focuses on educating youth about substance abuse prevention. This year the official Red Ribbon Week is October 23rd - 31st. The theme is "Be Kind to Your Mind - Live Drug Free." At Florence we celebrate Red Ribbon Month so we can spread the activities out over each Friday for our theme days. At the elementary level, the lessons focus on making healthy choices for our bodies. For example, healthy food, exercise and positive peer relationships. For parents, the conversation about safe and unsafe items for kids can start with conversations about common household products that are poisonous for human consumption, such as cleaning products, detergents, etc. Feel free to contact Mrs. Bowen if you have any questions.
We will be celebrating with the following dress up days and activities:
October 20- You have the power to live drug free! Dress up as your favorite superhero!
October 23- Red Ribbon Assembly- Performance by KidStand!
The KidStand Performance team engages the students with games, hip hop dance, singing and a skit that will empower the students to know they can make good choices!
Girl Scouts Lunch Visit
A representative from girl scouts will be coming during lunch on Monday, October 16th to pass out some bracelets and information to our girls about Girl Scouts activities in Keller. Thank you to everyone who helped make the fall book fair a huge success! We are especially grateful to our grandparents who so generously support our school. Because of all of you, we raised $7K, all of which will go directly to the FES library for new books and literacy programming. Additionally, we were able to give back to our teacher’s and donate extra books to stock the shelves in their classrooms, a way to give back to them for all they do for our children! Happy reading, FES!
