Mrs. Brandel's Message

Dear Falcon Families,
Can you believe that we have already celebrated 100 days of school and our Kindergarteners have already been Florence Falcons for 100 days?  They celebrated in a BIG way this week, as they were welcomed by our Keller High School drumline.  I loved seeing the creativity of our students and their parents as students paraded into the school in their 100 year old attire and 100 day t-shirts! So many of our students really got into character, playing the part, and asking that we call them "Pa-paw!"

This was also counselor appreciation week and our students have showered our wonderful counselor with cards, posters, and extra  hugs!  We are so fortunate and blessed to have Mrs. Bowen serving our students and school each day with her incredible presence, love for our students, and dedication to our school!  She is such an important and impactful member of our staff and in the lives of our students as she is always there to encourage them, to help them to grow and to be there to help them when they need! Thank you, Mrs. Bowen!

We also had the opportunity to celebrate our PTA reflections artists this week in a special reception and hear about their work related to being hopeful. Artists shared their visual arts, videos, or photographs that they took and shared their artists statements.  Thank you, Karen Grabow, for facilitating the reflections program, workshops and reception for our students!

Our 4th grade students did an outstanding job in their STAAR field test this week, which provides the state with some baseline information and out students with an additional opportunity to interact with the test.

Throughout this week, I have been in several of our classrooms and seen students engaged in writing.  Even from one week to the next, I am so impressed with how much our students are growing as writers and the depth of their ideas and connections they are making in texts and between texts!  Growing is our goal and our students are on a roll!

In efforts of continuing our focus on safety and security, we conducted a lockdown drill yesterday with the support and participation of Southlake Police Department. The SPD corporal commented on how well executed our safety procedures were and what a great job our students and staff did at moving quickly and quietly into their designated safety areas!  Way to go, Falcons!

As a reminder, there are no classes for students  on Friday, February 16 and Monday, February 19th and mark your calendars for our Open House Olympics on February 26th!  We hope to see all of our families there (see more details below)!

We wish everyone a wonderful weekend and a great week ahead!

In Falcon Spirit!

HIGHLIGHTING THE TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE AT FLORENCE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!

Learning Spotlights

100 Days Smarter in Kindergarten at Florence Elementary School!

Kindergarten students celebrated 100 days of learning on Tuesday!  They were welcomed by the KHS drumline and arrived dressed like they were 100 years old.  Throughout the day, students counted to 100 in different ways, like counting 100 pieces of their snack, putting 100 dots on a paper, counting 100 stickers, and counting to 100 as they worked together.  They enjoyed a day of themed experiences today in celebration of being 100 days smarter!  Click play on the video to see more of the fun we had!

Becoming Connective Writers in 3rd Grade!

Mrs. Howell's students worked together to share ideas in preparation for writing about two different texts that they have read. Students read each text, identified the author's message and then composed a written work that analyzed the commonalities of the texts, using examples and evidence from the text.  They have learned the components of a written response including an introduction, their ideas and the supporting evidence and the conclusion. They used sentence stems to help guide their writing and did a great job of making connections!  Its has been so fun to see how they have grown as writers, even in just the last few weeks!

Mrs. Harris - 2nd Grade Teacher

"Mrs. Harris has been our teacher for 2 years now, she really does an amazing job with my daughter and I couldn’t ask for more as a parent. (My child) has excelled in reading and loves being a part of her class. Mrs. Harris is super responsive, sweet and caring.". - Anna, FES Parent

Mrs. Howard- 2nd Grade Teacher

"Mrs. Howard is so patient, loving, and kind -- yet pushes (my child) beyond his comfort zone...and that is exactly what our son needs. He's often comfortable to stay in his "middle ground," and we're so thankful that Mrs. Howard lovingly and gently pushes him to his utmost ability. He comes home almost daily telling us how much he loves Mrs. Howard and/or shares an anecdote about his day with her -- and never once has it been negative When (my child) finishes a test or an assignment early in class, he will write little notes to Mrs. Howard on the back of his paper. (Sweet things like, "I love you, Mrs. Howard," or "Red is the BEST color!" [because he knows her favorite color is purple]) And every single time, Mrs. Howard will grade his paper and return it with a short reply back to him. (I've attached a few examples to this email.) It's small gestures like this that not only make a child feel loved, known, and accepted at school -- but show us as parents how Mrs. Howard genuinely knows her students, and her love for them is clearly displayed in the time she takes in replying to a 7-year-old's note on the back of a spelling test." - Brittany- FES Parent

Join us for the FES Olympics (Open House)

We are so excited for this year's Open House where we will celebrate all of the learning, literacy and arts at FES this year!  Parents, you and your child will begin your Olympic journey in your child's homeroom class where you will get to share in some of their work and will receive your Olympic Events booklet.  From here, you will move around the building to visit our library, our gym, and our fine arts areas! As students and parents complete the activities in each Olympic event, you will receive a stamp.

Our goal is for our parents and students to share in each experience together, so parents, you must participate with your child to receive your Olympic stamp!  Upon completion of all of the events in each of the rings, our PTA has provided a treat for students to pick up on their way out in the courtyard.  We can't wait for you to share in this experience with your child!

*Weather permitting, we plan to have the side gate open for overflow parking,  but ask that families, please plan to arrive by last name in order to help ensure that there is enough parking and space in the building for all of our Falcon families!

STAAR INTERIM TEST

State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) Interim Assessments are online assessments that align to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and that help educators monitor student progress and predict student performance on STAAR.  These tests provide our teachers with data to monitor student performance related to the state standards and provides us with insight as to areas where students may need additional support either in general or individually.   This also gives our students a practice opportunity in a testing environment and with the new STAAR 2.0 question types that include drag and drop, free response, and multiple answer selection which differs from how STAAR was prior to 2023.

We are in the midst of cold and flu season and recognize that many of our families have been impacted.  Our custodial team is continuing to disinfect and clean our school according to the district guidelines and processes.  We also continue to encourage healthy practices of handwashing, covering your cough/ sneeze, taking care of your body, and remaining away from others you are sick.  Thank you for your partnership in supporting a healthy environment!  We are hopeful that this nice, long weekend will allow everyone time to rest, enjoy time together and to return fully ready to learn!
