Mrs. Brandel's Message
Dear Falcon Families,
Another wonderful week has come and gone at FES as we wrapped up the month of November and kick off December! Take a moment to review some of the highlights in our spotlight below!
FES Spelling bee! Congrats to all of our spellers!
A visit from KMS Band
CEIC
Penguin Patch Fun
And more....
I am also incredibly grateful for our Campus Education Improvement Committee members who met this week and worked to provide feedback, insight, and ideas for continuing to improve the learning experience for our students, staff, families, and community! Thank you, all for your time and wonderful dialogue! We are seeing amazing progress in learning and were thrilled by the STAAR interim results (below) which are a data point that shows the success that our students are having and indicates the work that we still will be doing as we will continue the second half of the year! We have two more weeks before our next Holiday with more excitement to come as we celebrate this holiday season and middle of the school year together!
In Falcon Spirit,

Highlighting the tradition of excellence at Florence Elementary School!

FES Spelling BEE
Congratulations to all of our 3rd and 4th grade Spelling Bee Participants and to our Bee winners who will be joining the district Spelling Bee! Our spellers all did an outstanding job of representing their grade level and it is evident that they all studied and worked hard! After several rounds, our final two students were:
1st Place: Grant Holmes
2nd Place: Ruby Russell
Thank you also to Mrs. Howell, for leading our students and organizing our Spelling Bee!
Great job and congratulations to all of our spelling bee participants!
Keller Middle School Band Holiday Tour
FES was the first stop on the Keller Middle School Band's Holiday Tour! We kicked off the day on Wednesday learning about instruments and hearing some beautiful meolodies from our KMS band, with some former FES Falcons performing on stage! Our students were both entertained and inspired to see the possibilities they have as future KMS students! Thank you, KMS!
Penguin Patch Fun
Students strategically chose gifts for their loved ones, practiced using money, and took care in wrapping and labeling the gifts that they chose! Thank you to the Penguin Patch for providing this opportunity for our students! All proceeds benefit our campus. Thank you to all of our volunteers and to the staff of Jenny's Penguin Patch!
Learning Highlights
Our first grade students have been busy this week working and growing as readers, writers, and mathematicians. This week, I had the pleasure of seeing these classes all in action in math during their spiral review, problem, solving, number talks and main lesson. I also was able to join them for reading this week where they participated in guided reading, shared reading, analysis of their reading, word work, and writing or drawing of their ideas as the looked at cause and effect in informational text. Our wonderful teachers utilize whole group, small group, and one on one supports of students, and encourage collaboration between students as they practice and learn new skills. Even though they are working on foundational skills, critical thinking and reasoning is encouraged. a Students are able to explain their thinking, share their ideas and thoughts and try new skills!

STAAR INTERIM RESULTS
This past month, our 3rd and 4th grade students took the STAAR Interim test. This assessment provides us with a snapshot look at how our students are performing and how they are predicted to do at the end of the year. Students are exposed to STAAR 2.0 questions and do their best to respond. Our teachers are provided with the data of student performance on each item and are able to determine which TEKS or concepts students would need additional support! We are proud of the work of our students and are on track for success! FEE students performed above both the KISD and ESC Region performance levels and are projected to exceed our campus and district goals this year. Way to go, students!
Click through the slides to see our results. The top represents ESC Region 11 perofrmance, the middle is KISD, and the bottom is FES.
New News
Angel Tree
Thank you so much to for making sure our Angel Tree was taken care of! Your generosity is very appreciated! Wrapped angel tree gifts are due Tuesday December 5th. Please make sure the original angel is attached to the outside of the gift.
STUCO Candy Gram Sales
Student Council will be selling Candy Cane Grams from December 6 - 12 before school from 7:30 - 7:55 for $1. They will be delivered to students on Thursday December 14th. The money earned from our candy cane gram sale will go toward the school improvement project that Student Council decides on in the spring semester.
Snacks for sale
The cafeteria will be selling snack items in addition to the regular lunch every Wednesday until winter break. Please make sure that students have money in their account to purchase snacks.
If you do not wish for your student to have the option to purchase snacks, please log onto your Sodexo account and select that preference which will alert the cafeteria system. Please also communicate your expectations to your child.
Students who purchase lunch may choose snacks as they go through the line, and those who bring their lunch may join the line to purchase snack items, as well.
Snacks for the Day
In addition to the ability to purchase snacks on Wednesdays, please continue to send your child with snacks, as our teachers allow daily snack time throughout the day at a designated time. As our students are growing quickly, some students have been sharing that they are increasingly hungry, and might benefit from a bit more to help sustain them with the energy they need to learn through the day!
Attendance
Being present is one of the most important factors for student learning. Did you also know that aside from being important for individual students, in the state of Texas, school funding is directly tied to student attendance? If a student is not present at school, the district does not receive funding for that student on that day. Our current average daily attendance as a campus is around 95%- meaning that 95% of students are present on a daily basis.
At the elementary level, attendance is officially recorded and reported to the state at 9:50 AM. This means that any student who is not here before that time will be considered absent. Likewise, any student who arrives past that time is also considered absent. (For those of you with students in middle school and high school, the time is different, so please check with your child's school for their specific policies).
As you are planning ahead for known and routine doctor appointments, dentist appointments, and other non-emergency appointments, and family travel, please be aware of the 9:50 ADA reporting time in order to support our campus attendance and bring a doctor's note upon return. If your child is sick, by all means, please keep them home to allow them to get better.
Tips
If your child has an appointment, but is present at 9:50 AM, they will get credit for the day with a medical note. Think about this when making appointments.
Switch between morning and afternoon appointments so your child doesn’t miss the same subject all the time.
At all costs, try to prevent being absent from reading and math class. Communicate with teachers to see when students will miss the least amount of instruction when scheduling known and planned appointments.
Try to plan family vacations and travels around the school calendar to ensure your child will be present.
If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
Lay out clothes, backpacks, and other school items the night before to ease the morning routine so that your child is able to arrive on time and ready to learn.
Nutcracker Day
Every year we ask all our students to bring in their special Nutcrackers to be displayed for all the FES students to see! Your student may bring their Nutcracker to school beginning on Monday, December 11 until the 14th. Please make sure that you have the nutcracker labeled with the student’s name, grade and teacher on the bottom of its base. The nutcrackers will go home with your student at the end of the day on Thursday or on Friday. We can’t wait to see all what your student will bring!
PTA Volunteers for Nutcracker Day Needed
We are also in need of face painters for Nutcracker day. Please use the link below if you have time to help out on Thursday Dec 14th.
KISD Budget Education Seminar Recording Available
Keller ISD Interim Superintendent John Allison hosted a Community Budget Education Seminar on November 29, sharing with KISD stakeholders the causes behind the District's current budget challenges. You can view the full seminar by visiting Keller ISD's YouTube Channel and can also download the presentation slideshow.
During the presentation, Mr. Allison shared how factors such as rising inflation and the Texas Legislature failing to increase the basic per student funding allotment since 2019 have put Keller ISD in a situation where it has to address a potential budget deficit of more than $27 million. Please take a moment to view the presentation for more details. Those with additional questions about Keller ISD's budget or about how public schools are funded in Texas are invited to click here to submit questions for future Frequently Asked Question features on KellerISD.net.
Additional educational opportunities will be made available in the coming months. In the meantime, Keller ISD invites you to contact your elected representatives and let them know that public school funding should be a legislative priority. The state of Texas has a record budget surplus, a portion of which has already been set aside for public school funding. However, without legislation, those funds still sit in limbo. Click here to access a quick form letter that you can fill out and send to your elected officials.
We are dedicated to keeping the community informed and educated throughout this budgeting process. We know that our students deserve better, and we will continue to do all that we can to provide them the educational experience and opportunities that they deserve.
