Mrs. Brandel's Message

Dear Falcon Families,

Weeks like this are my favorite kind! This newsletter is especially packed full of spotlight photos so that you can share in all of the fun that we had at FES this week.   Thank you to all of our families who joined us for our Open House Olympics and to all of our teachers who created special and memorable activities for our families to share in together.  What better way to start a week than highlighting the learning of our students and sharing in fun with our families!

We kicked off the weekend celebrating our Battle of the Books teams in their representation of FES at the KISD battle of the books.   It was so much fun to feel the excitement over reading and see our student work together to answer questions about their books.  Congratulations to all of our students who participated and did an outstanding job!

We have also had a busy week of learning as we are just one week away from finishing our third quarter.  I have seen classrooms that are busy with hands-on learning experiences, a focus on equipping students with strategies for problem solving, and creativity galore in our fine arts classrooms.  Our teachers have been working together to plan ways to address student needs indicated by our unit summative tests and our standardized tests that we have taken and they have some exciting things planned for the upcoming weeks.

Tomorrow, we hope that you can join us at the Casey's Kids fun run and expo! I received information that FES is among the top FOUR schools in registration and will be recognized and might even be the one receiving the Casey's Cup!

I hope that everyone has a wonderful weekend!  We look forward to a wonderful four day week next week and a great final week of our third 9 weeks!

In Falcon Spirit!

Battle of the Books

Congratulations to our FES Battle of the Books teams!  The Fearless Falcons and Flying Falcons worked together, shared in the fun of reading, and did an amazing job at this year's KISD Battle of the Books!  Thank you, Mrs. Roberts, for leading and guiding these amazing readers over the last several months! Thank you, parents and KISD librarians and curriculum team for supporting this fun event!

FES Open House Olympic Highlights

Thank you to all of our families who joined us for the FES Open House Olympics!  The competition was fierce, and everyone showed their best effort as they completed each of the events in our classrooms, gym, art, theatre, music room and library!  Students loved sharing their learning wtih their families!  Our teachers pulled out all the stops to ensure that it was a memorable event for all! Thank you, PTA for sharing a sweet treat with our students!

Spotlight on Learning

2nd Grade Math

Chunking, Expanded Form, Number lines, and 100's charts, oh my! Our 2nd grade math classes are working on using different strategies to add and subtract numbers.  This week, the second grade students moved between classrooms to spend time with each teacher and focused on and practiced a specific strategy in each classroom they visited.

1st Grade Science

Mrs. Parkerson's 1st grade students enjoyed the nice weather and spent some time learning about the parts of plants in real life by observing our campus garden!  Students drew their observations in their science journals and discussed the parts of the plant as they looked at them together.

1st Grade- Historical Figures

As a part of their social studies unit, our 1st grade students explored the contributions of different historical leaders and wrote about how they were a shining example of being a good citizen!

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish in Co-curr!

Our Co-curr team made today an extra special day as our students participated in Dr. Seuss themed activities in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday.  Our team of teachers made it even more fun as they all donned their best Cat in the Hat attire!

STAAR INTERIM TEST

State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) Interim Assessments are online assessments that align to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and that help educators monitor student progress and predict student performance on STAAR.  These tests provide our teachers with data to monitor student performance related to the state standards and provides us with insight as to areas where students may need additional support either in general or individually.   This also gives our students a practice opportunity in a testing environment and with the new STAAR 2.0 question types that include drag and drop, free response, and multiple answer selection which differs from how STAAR was prior to 2023.

4th Grade: Note the change in dates from the original communication and calendars

The Big Event- Register on the KISD Webstore!

Hello, Florence Elementary School Families,

The Big Event is coming to Keller ISD on Saturday, April 6, and we’re so excited for our campus to participate!

As background, The Big Event is a district-wide day of service open to all KISD students, their families, and staff members from each of KISD’s 42 campuses. The event is designed to not only join and unite our district and campus together through service-oriented activities, but also to express gratitude for the support of the communities who give back to KISD each and every day. Think of it as a giant, tangible “Thank you.”

On April 6, each KISD campus will come together at the same times across our district and the surrounding communities to serve and give back. I’m excited to share that Florence Elementary School will be participating in the following activities on the day of The Big Event, and your student(s) and your family are invited to join us:

9:00 AM -11:00 AM

12:00 PM -2:00 PM

You can sign your child and your family up to volunteer and sign the district’s liability waiver on KISD’s secure Web Store here. To access the Web Store, parents/students must log in with their student ID number and student’s last name (in upper/lowercase letters). Once logged in, you should see your child’s name at the top of the screen.  After clicking on your child’s name, you will see a search feature at the top of the screen.  Type “Big” in the search field and click search.  You will be taken straight to the Big Event items for your child’s campus.

Be on the lookout next month for an email containing specific, day-of details for the job(s) you signed up for. Note that we’re asking each student to wear their Florence Elementary School T-shirt on the day of The Big Event, so be sure you locate that today...and, get your social media accounts ready to share photos of your family volunteering; follow Keller ISD on Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter); tag the district; and be sure to use the hashtag #KISDBigEvent24!

This event is not mandatory, but we’d love to have as many Florence Elementary School families, students, teachers, and staff participate in this special day. This is a family-centered event, so we’d ask that families attend with their children if at all possible. Additionally, service hours for organizations like National Honor Society (NHS), National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), Eagle Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc. will be granted for participation in The Big Event.

Attached to this link is a helpful Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document, and you can also find more information including a video that guides you through the registration process at: www.kellerisd.net/bigevent. We are so excited about The Big Event and hope you’ll make plans to join us (or the campus of another child in your family) on Saturday, April 6, to serve and give back!

Multicultural night! and Book Fair
