Mrs. Brandel's Message
Dear Falcon Families,
The temperature may be dropping, but the Florence Falcons are soaring! Our students have had a great week of learning and are growing each day!
Today, our Campus Educational Improvement Committee (CEIC) joined us for campus walks in a math, RLA, co-curr, and social studies class, visiting classrooms across each grade level to see learning in action. Our parents in our committee shared some of the highlights and things they observed about learning at FES:
"I was surprised how active learning is. It wasn’t just students sitting down and looking at blackboard- kids are up and down and moving and doing."
"In every class, there are clear systems and procedures and students know when to start focusing and when to say they are ready. Kids have consistency of processes."
"Our teachers are making sure they are including all the ways that kids receive learning- visual, talking, and group discussions."
"Phonics, while generally not the most exciting of topics, was really fun in the ways that the teachers teach it with students interacting, and writing on their own boards!"
We recognized that learning looks different than it did when we were in students and that our students have so much opportunity to think and share their learning beyond paper and pencil. It was wonderful to have this group join us today and we shared in conversation that will continue to support us in our campus goals and improvement processes as we, as a campus, continue find ways to make connections between school and home to support student learning.
There are great things happening at Florence Elementary and I am so grateful for amazing students, teachers, staff and families!
I hope that you all have a nice, warm weekend and look forward to seeing everyone next week!
In Falcon Spirit,
Courtney Brandel

3rd Grade
Revise and Edit
After digging into STAAR interim data, our 3rd grade team decided to incorporate more practice with reision and editing of existing sentences. Mrs. Rice's third grade class worked together to help this author improve his writing with a fun, active, and physical activity.
Kindergarten
WritinG
Our kindergarten students are working on composing and writing their own sentences using words. Students in Mrs. Parten's class wrote a sentence about something they have done or an experience they have had, representing it with a picture and a sentence.
3rd Grade
Diving into plays
Mrs Gilland's 3rd grade class continued their exploration of different genres of writing as they began reading a play from our new HMH book. Before reading, they discussed the features of a play, and what makes this type of writing unique.
1st grade
Number Talks
Our first grade students in Mrs. Anderson's class used their tools to guess how a classmate represented a number with a specific number of adends. In this example, students shared different ways to form the number 13 using four different addends, trying to guess how their classmate's mystery addends.
3rd Grade
Phonics
The third grade students in Mrs. Howell's class looked at vowel blends and consonant digraphs in their phonics lesson, practicing "ee" "ea" and other phonetic blends using our Reading Horizons program that engages students through movement, practice, oral and written response. Students were even able to spell a nonsense word using the phonics rules they had learned.
2nd Grade Theatre
In 2nd grade, students explored developing characters by giving them voices, personalities, and a name. They practiced with a partner using different puppets.
CEIC Campus Walks
Thank you, CEIC members, for joining us today and sharing in our learning!
STAFF SHOUTOUTS
Ms. Linkka - Kindergarten Teacher
Ms. Linkka goes above and beyond for her students and always makes them feel important and loved. She was even kind enough to take time out of her busy weekend to come and watch three of her students play basketball on a Saturday afternoon. Florence and our kids are so lucky to have such a wonderful person like Ms. Linkka in our lives! -FES Parent, C.Collins
We love celebrating the tradition of excellence at FES! As a part of that process, we will be recognizing our amazing staff members and would like your help.
Please share the name and information of the staff member you feel who is deserving of recognition along with some words that share the reason they are being recognized. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday on Monday- No Classes
This week, in library, our students learned about MLK Jr. and his contribution as a leader in our country, reading different stories about his life and impact. We wish you all a wonderful holiday as we celebrate Dr. King's legacy and life and wish you all a safe wintery day!
Winter weather
Keller ISD continues to monitor the upcoming winter weather:
Keller ISD Families and Staff,
With sub-freezing temperatures in the forecast for Saturday evening through Wednesday morning, we wanted to let you know that Keller ISD’s emergency operations team will be closely monitoring weather conditions. Any decision about altering our schedules due to weather conditions will be made after considering the conditions of roads and sidewalks in the District and surrounding areas, building conditions, and forecasts from the National Weather Service.
Any updates will be posted to www.KellerISD.net as a pop-up alert. An email notification will also be sent to all Keller ISD families, employees, and students. Additionally, families will receive an automated phone call and text message (if they opted into receiving text messages). Anyone who has downloaded the Keller ISD Mobile App will also receive a push notification to their mobile device. Updates will be posted to Keller ISD’s official social media accounts, as well (Facebook, Instagram, and X/Twitter).
We encourage everyone to remain weather-aware throughout the weekend and into next week.
Winter Weather and Outdoor Activity
We will continue to follow the KISD guidelines for outdoor activity:
Wind chill or actual temperature between 40-32 degrees Fahrenheit – Students must have the ability to cover all extremities. Limited outside activity not to exceed 20 minutes.
Wind chill or actual temperature below 32 degrees Fahrenheit – No outside activity.
Please be sure your child is dressed for the cold weather with their arms, legs, and body covered and with a coat, gloves, and winter hat on cold days.
HEalthy Falcons
We are in the midst of cold and flu season and recognize that many of our families have been impacted. Our custodial team is continuing to disinfect and clean our school according to the district guidelines and processes. We also continue to encourage healthy practices of handwashing, covering your cough/ sneeze, taking care of your body, and remaining away from others you are sick. Thank you for your partnership in supporting a healthy environment! We are hopeful that this nice, long weekend will allow everyone time to rest, enjoy time together and to return fully ready to learn!
Keller ISD Special Board Meetings and budget
Dear Keller ISD Community,
Keller ISD is facing a $27 million budget deficit due to the Texas Legislature’s failure to support public education. The state had a surplus of more than $30 billion and chose not to spend a single penny to address inflationary costs (which have increased by 17%), provide pay raises to our hard-working educators (the only state employee group that did not receive raises this year), adequately address safety and security of school campuses, and properly fund much-need programs like Special Education.
The KISD Board of Trustees held a Special Meeting for a Budget Workshop on Thursday evening, January 11. The administration provided an update on the District’s financial outlook for the 2024-25 fiscal year. You can click here to watch the Workshop in its entirety
At the Budget Workshop, Keller ISD’s new superintendent, Dr. Tracy Johnson, updated the community and the Board about how the administration is approaching this challenge, along with the District’s unwavering commitment to continue providing an exceptional education for all students. Keller ISD is united, and we will use this historic budget crisis as an opportunity for innovation. The School Board and District are committed to:
Ensuring Excellent Opportunities for Student Academic Success
Providing and Maintaining Student Programming
Supporting KISD’s Amazing Educators
Ensuring the Safety and Security of KISD Campuses for All KISD Students
Protecting the Interests of Taxpayers by Passing a Balanced Budget
Using this Historic Budget Crisis as an Opportunity for Innovation
Over the next two weeks, District leaders will be working directly with campus and district-level administrators to look at new ways to continue offering exceptional learning opportunities and impactful instruction in Keller ISD. The plan is to then share additional updates at the Board’s Regular Meeting on January 25.
We need our state lawmakers to rise the occasion and we will continue to encourage and challenge them to do so. Keller ISD is an exceptional district with exceptional people, and we are going to get through this challenge together.
As a reminder, please visit www.SaveKellerISD.net to send a quick message to Governor Abbott, encouraging him to call a fifth special session to fund Texas public schools.
Thank you for continuing to stay engaged and please make sure to visit www.KellerISD.net/BudgetUpdates to find all of the latest budget information.
