Letters to Church Leaders
As the early church expanded outside Jerusalem, new churches were planted in various cities. Each church needed godly leaders to help it grow and stay true to the gospel. Paul understood this need, which is why he wrote letters to some of the leaders in the church. Two of these leaders were Timothy and Titus. Timothy was Paul’s friend. He had traveled with Paul and helped him. Now Timothy was a leader at the church in Ephesus.
Titus was a Gentile believer. He had traveled with Paul, too. Now Titus was on the island of Crete to help train more church leaders. Paul wrote to give Timothy and Titus advice, and he gave instructions for all the church leaders.
Paul warned Timothy and Titus that being a leader was difficult at times, but God had chosen them to be leaders. Their role as leaders put them in a position to serve God. Paul hoped that recognizing this would help them persevere and live in a way that pleased Christ.
As you share with your kids, help them see the value in God’s gift of church leaders. Look for ways to support your leaders so that your kids value them, love them, and respect them. Consider ways your group can encourage your leaders.
At the same time, emphasize that God is at work in them and that they too might be leaders in the church one day—perhaps one day soon. Help your kids see that being a leader is a great privilege to help point others to the gospel.
Finally, be sure that your kids understand that church leaders do not lead on their own. All church leaders follow the leadership of Jesus, who was a servant-leader to us. He gave His life so that we could be forgiven of our sins.
Praise God for His attributes: holiness, greatness, grace, love, mercy, etc.
Thank God for sending His Son Jesus to save us from our sins.
Thank God for His goodness, provision, forgiveness, etc.
Thank You God for for sacrificing Your Son Jesus on the Cross to take our just punishment of death. Thank You Jesus for Your obedience to the Father and suffer the pain and death on the Cross. Thank You for the victory over death by raising Jesus from the grave on the third day! Because He is risen, the children of God shall inherit eternal life. Thank You God!
Ask God for His Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts, minds, and spirits to worship God and learn the lesson He has for us today.
God, we are here to worship, adore, and exalt You. Speak and teach us through Your Word. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
You may ask all the kids to take turn to pray as well.
Let's dwell on the holiness of God and His expectation of us, too.
Leader: To make disciples, we have to be willing to talk with other people and share what Jesus has done for us. Many people are nervous talking to others and sharing the gospel. But the more we practice, the easier it is. Say our key passage one more time to your partner to practice talking to others about Jesus.
Let's all sing “I Am With You Always" (Matthew 28:19-20).
Leader: Jesus knew things wouldn’t always be easy in life so He gave us His promise of peace and a reminder that He has overcome the world. We can move forward on our mission to make disciples with confidence because Jesus is always with us. Let’s praise Jesus for that great promise!
Let’s sing together “Go Tell The World.”
Invite kids to pray items below:
Share praises from this past week of what God did in your lives.
Confess and repent of our sins. Pray to God for His holiness and purity in our lives.
Ask God to forgive us, and ask the Holy Spirit to help us in self-control.
Share prayer requests with each other. Pray for each other.
Ask God to give wisdom for parents, school teachers and kids for work, in-person and virtual learning to manage time, technology, and meals for this semester.
Let's pray for the pastors, ministers and elders of our church. And continue to pray that God will raise many good Christian men and women to serve in the church, so that the ones who serve over us would fear the Lord, walk humbly, and act justly.
God, thank You so much for providing us with church leaders who trust and obey You. Help us to learn from their example so we can share the gospel and lead other people to know You too. In the Name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
Christ Connection: Paul wrote to guide Timothy and Titus and to help all church leaders know how to lead God’s people. Church leaders help believers know what is true, and they serve the church by following the example of Jesus, who served us by dying on the cross for our sins. We follow Jesus, not to earn His love, but because of His love for us. What a great truth to share with those around us!
Guide kids to open their Bibles to the table of contents. Point out that most of the New Testament is made up of letters. Mention there are two types of letters: letters to churches and letters to individual people. See if kids can identify which ones were written to individual people (1 Timothy; 2 Timothy; Titus; Philemon).
LEADER SAY • Paul’s letters to Timothy, Titus, and Philemon are full of practical instructions for all believers, not just the people they were originally written for.
(Take your time to ask, let the kids to ponder and answer the following questions)
Remind kids that Timothy was young. It is often hard to lead and teach people who are older than you because you might lack experience or the wisdom that comes from experience.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read 1 Tim. 4:12a.)
Help kids recognize that the choices they make about how they talk and treat others will point people to Jesus.
(Option: Choose a kid to read 1 Tim. 4:12b,16.)
Guide kids to discuss how our power comes from God through the Holy Spirit who lives in us.
(Option: Choose a kid to read 2 Tim. 1:7,13-14.)
Leader Say: God has a plan and purpose for your life, even now while you are young. Ask God to help you live your life in a way that will show your love for Jesus and point people of all ages to Him.
Leader Say: As you watch this video, think about why Christians go to church.
After the video, guide them to discuss how they have been encouraged in their faith by meeting with other believers.

Leader: The gospel unites all kinds of people in love. Missionaries understand this, and that’s why they want to tell all people everywhere about Jesus. Let’s watch a video about how a church in Toronto, Canada, was started. Listen for what J.D. Fasolino’s favorite part about ministry is.
Watch the missions video. Then ask kids what J.D. Fasolino said was his favorite part of missions in Toronto (baptizing new believers and seeing them grow in faith).
Leader: When we read in the Bible that God rescued Peter from prison, we know that God can do amazing miracles. We see God do great things when we look to Him and His power.
Missionaries learn to rely on God’s power and expect Him to do great things. Let’s learn more about a missionary in Toronto, Canada, who is seeing God do amazing work.
Watch the missions video. Then ask kids about the different cultures they saw in Toronto. Take time to pray for the Fasolinos in Toronto and for any missionaries your church supports.
