Philip and the Ethiopians
The believers in the early church faced intense persecution. After Stephen was killed, Jesus’ followers at the church in Jerusalem scattered; however, they did not stop talking about Jesus. They continued to share the good news. One man, Philip, took the gospel to Samaria. The crowds there listened and believed, and they had great joy.
In today’s Bible story, Philip was instructed by an angel of the Lord to go to a certain road in the desert. Philip obeyed. The Spirit led Philip to a chariot, where an Ethiopian official was reading the Scriptures from the prophet Isaiah. The Ethiopian man did not understand what he was reading, so Philip explained it to him.
The man was reading from the prophet Isaiah: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter … In his humiliation justice was denied him … For his life is taken from the earth” (Acts 8:32-33). The official wondered if Isaiah was speaking about himself or another person. Philip told the official that Isaiah’s words weren’t about Isaiah; they were about the Messiah—Jesus! The official believed in Jesus and was baptized.
Guide kids to consider the role of the Holy Spirit in this interaction between Philip and the Ethiopian official. Who was responsible for Philip’s going to the desert? Who helped Philip explain the Scriptures? Who changed the heart of the official so he would believe?
After his interaction with the Ethiopian official, Philip continued sharing the gospel in all the towns on his way to the town of Caesarea.
In our mission of making disciples, believers must be willing instruments to be used in the hands of the Lord. Philip didn’t go into the desert that day with a strategy for converting another man; the Holy Spirit led Philip, and he obeyed. As believers, we can be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and willing to follow His lead. He will go with us.
Praise God for His attributes: holiness, greatness, grace, love, mercy, etc.
Thank God for sending His Son Jesus to save us from our sins.
Thank God for His goodness, provision, forgiveness, etc.
Thank God for carrying us through 2020.
Ask God for His Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts, minds, and spirits to worship God and learn the lesson He has for us today.
God, we are here to worship, adore, and exalt You. Speak and teach us through Your Word. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
You may ask all the kids to take turn to pray as well.
Leader: Our key passage is a great reminder that Jesus is our ultimate leader. Having first place in everything also means having first place in our lives. Only Jesus deserves our worship and praise. Let's all sing “First Place in Everything" (Colossians 1:18).”
Leader: God promises to bless us when we are willing to obey Him. He already knows what is best for us, so when we follow that plan, blessings will come. And helping other people learn about Jesus because we shared His love is an amazing blessing for us too! Let’s sing our unit song together. Let’s sing together “This is Where the Mission Begins.”
Share praises from this past week of what you see God's been doing in your lives.
Confess and repent of our sins. Pray to God for His holiness and purity in our lives.
Ask God to forgive us, and ask the Holy Spirit to help us in self-control.
Share prayer requests with each other. Pray for each other.
Ask God to give wisdom for parents, school teachers and kids for virtual learning to manage time, technology, and meals for this semester.
Let's pray that God will raise many good Christian men and women to serve in public offices, so that the ones who govern over us would fear the Lord, walk humbly, and act justly.
Jesus, thank You for Your amazing love for us. Thank You that You allow us to be part of Your plan to share Your love with other people. Help us to be obedient like Philip, trusting You with each next step as You reveal them to us. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Christ Connection: It takes people like you and me to explain to others about Jesus. In today’s story, the Ethiopian official knew what the Old Testament prophets said, but he did not understand that they spoke about Jesus. The Holy Spirit led Philip to help the official understand the good news about Jesus: Jesus died on the cross for our sins and was raised from the dead, just like the Old Testament prophets said.
Once Philip explained it, the official joyfully accepted this news and his life was changed. The official carried this great news home with him. We can only imagine how many other people believed because of his testimony!
Guide kids to open their Bibles to John 14.
Choose 1 to 3 volunteers to read aloud verses 16, 17, and 26.
LEADER SAY • These verses are in the Book of John, one of the four Gospels. John spent time with Jesus and wrote down the words of Jesus in these verses. Who is Jesus talking about in these verses? (the Holy Spirit) What did Jesus say the Holy Spirit would do? (be a counselor, live with us and in us, teach us what to say, remind us of what Jesus said)
(Take your time to ask, let the kids to ponder and answer the following questions)
Help kids recognize that the Holy Spirit spoke to Philip and Philip obeyed.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Acts 8:29.)
Lead kids to recall that Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would help us and teach us what to say.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Mark 13:11.)
Help kids recognize that when we follow Jesus, God promises to send each of us the Holy Spirit to live within us. This promise is for everyone!
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Acts 2:38-39.)
Leader: The Holy Spirit tells people today to go and tell people about Jesus, like He told Philip to tell the Ethiopian man about Jesus. When Christians work together to share the gospel, we can reach more people all over the world.
Praise and thanksgiving to God that the Holy Spirit helps us to listen and obey God.
