The Last Supper
As the Passover celebration drew near, Jerusalem hummed with excitement. Everyone wondered if Jesus—teacher, miracle-worker, and prophet—would come for Passover. (John 11:56-57) The Passover meal was a permanent statute God intended for every Israelite family to observe each year. (See Ex. 12:1-28; Lev. 23:5-8.) But it was no secret the religious leaders were determined to kill Jesus. Jesus had warned His disciples what would happen this Passover. (Mark 10:33-34; Luke 18:31)
As they ate the Passover meal, Jesus broke bread and gave it to His disciples. He shared the cup with them too, explaining that the bread and cup represented His body and blood. Jesus established a new covenant.
In the Old Testament, God made a covenant, or promise, with His people. He gave them commandments to follow so they could live in right relationship with Him. But God’s people broke the covenant. They didn’t obey God, and they didn’t love Him.
What the sacrifice of the Passover lamb could not do—take away sins once and for all—the perfect Lamb of God was going to do. Jesus, the perfectly sinless Son of God, was going to take the punishment for sin upon Himself. (See Heb. 10:1-10.) As Jesus’ disciples prepared for Passover, Jesus prepared to die. By dying on the cross, Jesus brought forgiveness and made the way for people to know and love God again.
Believers take the Lord’s Supper to remember what Jesus did for us in His death and resurrection. We remember God’s faithfulness, and we look forward to the day that Jesus will return.
Not all the kids you teach will be ready to take the Lord’s Supper at church. Gently explain that the Lord’s Supper, like baptism, is an ordinance of the church and is a celebration for those who have repented of their sin and trusted in Jesus for salvation.
Christ Connection: Jesus showed His disciples with the bread and the drink that He is the true Passover Lamb. God’s people had broken the old covenant, and God promised to make a new covenant to forgive sins. The new covenant says that everyone who turns away from sin and trusts in Jesus’ death and resurrection will be forgiven of his sins and will have eternal life.
Praise God for His attributes: holiness, greatness, grace, mercy, etc.
Thank God for His goodness, provision, etc.
Ask God for His Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts, minds, and spirits to worship God and learn the lesson He has for us today.
God, thank You that out of Your love for us, You provided Your Son as the Messiah, the One who saves us from our sins. Thank You for being the eternal King who will reign over all. May we welcome You as King in every part of our lives. We love You, Lord. Amen.
You may ask all the kids to take turn to pray as well.
Leader: Our key passage says that Jesus humbled Himself. What does humble mean? [Allow kids to respond.] Being humble means “showing that you do not think of yourself as better than other people.” Jesus is the Son of God, but He left His throne in heaven to come to earth, live a sinless life, and die on the cross as the payment for our sins.
We didn’t deserve this, so why did God send Jesus? The Bible says that God sent Jesus out of His love for us. [See John 3:16.] let's all sing “He Humbled Himself (Philippians 2:8).”
Our big picture question is, What did Jesus do to save us? Jesus lived a sinless life, died on the cross, and rose from the dead. Let’s praise the Lord for loving us in our sin and providing the way of salvation through His Son, Jesus . Let’s sing together “Jesus Saves.”
Share praises from this past week of what you see God's been doing in your lives.
Confess and repent of our sins. Pray to God for His holiness and purity in our lives.
Ask God to forgive us, and ask the Holy Spirit to help to control us.
Share prayer requests with each other. Pray for each other.
Ask God to give wisdom for parents, school teachers and kids for virtual learning to manage time, technology, and meals for this semester.
Ask God for protection for those back to school and work physically from the COVID-19 virus.
Let's pray for Christians when they vote for the president of the USA that they would use biblical principles and godly values.
God, we praise You for loving us even while we were lost in our sin. Thank You for giving Jesus as the Passover Lamb, the payment for our sin. Help us remember Your sacrifice and honor You with the way we live our lives. In Jesus' name, Amen .
Distribute Bibles. Guide your children to open their Bibles to Luke 22. Today's story is found in all four Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Ask kids what the Gospels are about. (Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection).
Choose a volunteer to read aloud Luke 22:19-20.
LEADER SAY • What do these verses tell us about our big picture question, What did Jesus do to save us? [Allow kids to respond.] That’s right! He gave His body and poured out His blood for us. Jesus lived a sinless life, died on the cross, and rose from the dead.
(Take your time to ask, ponder and answer the following questions)
Help kids recognize that in the old covenant, God expected His people to live a certain way. He explained this covenant to Abraham in Genesis. God’s people had broken the old covenant over and over, so God in His mercy established a new covenant. The new covenant says that everyone who turns away from sin and trusts in Jesus’ death and resurrection will be forgiven of his sins and have eternal life.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Jer. 31:31.)
Lead kids to recall that by remembering Jesus’ sacrifice in this way, we “proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.”
(Option: Choose a kid to read 1 Cor. 11:23-26.)
Discuss with kids that our salvation is not dependent on our works because Jesus already lived a perfect life and died to pay for our sins. We receive the free gift of salvation by trusting Him as our Lord.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Rom. 10:9.)
Imagine being born into a world of poverty with a serious physical disability. This was the beginning for Lisa Olson, born without limbs in 1974. She was abandoned by her parents at a hospital in Manipal, India, where most of the doctors felt there was no point in keeping her alive.
But Dr. Kuruvilla George believed that God had a purpose for Lisa’s life. He contacted the Ramabai Mukti Mission to find a special place for her and then traveled 37 grueling hours to bring her there. Her name was changed to “Manyata,” meaning “acceptance” in the Marathi language.

The Mukti officials believed that Lisa required more extensive care, available in the United States. The only way that Lisa could travel to America was if she was adopted.
Marie Olson, clearly heard the Lord’s voice to adopt Lisa and bring her home to America. She changed her daughter’s name to Lisa Manyata Olson. As she matured Lisa developed a passion to help others learn to overcome their disabilities or obstacles.
Through Manyata Ministries℠, she travels the world and shares this message of love with people struggling with life’s difficulties. Lisa has spoken to churches, retreats, schools, women in prison, wounded soldiers and additional groups.
In her motivational messages, Lisa shares the story of her disability, its challenges, the life lessons she has learned and the opportunities she has been given. Lisa’s life clearly demonstrates her identity in God and ultimate dependence and trust in Him to overcome challenges and adversity. You will be touched, moved and inspired by her story.
Missionary Eric Liddell sacrificed everything, even his life, to obey God in China. Jesus sacrificed His life for us. God asks us to be willing to sacrifice everything to tell others about Jesus.

The musical is told from the Apostle John's perspective while he was in his old age in exile on the island of Patmos. John is rather humorous and engaging with the audience. But a word of caution: The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is "semi-gory" and might be disturbing to younger kids, K and under. Parental preview is advised (starts at 1:19:09). But then again, the crucifixion is real and Christ died to pay the death we all deserve.... As we're going through this unit in Kids Church, I pray you will take those many spiritual, Gospel moments that God provides to teach, and lead your child(ren) to salvation in Jesus Christ.
From the Production: A livestream of the 2020 Thorn production. This video was shot at one of our final dress rehearsals before the tour was cancelled. Though it's not DVD-quality audio or edits, we wanted to share the power of Jesus' love as told through this amazing cast & crew. Happy Easter! He is Risen. (special thanks to Matt Doyon for his help in getting this footage shot and posted!)
