Doers of the Word
The early church was made up mostly of Jewish believers who had grown up believing they needed to fully obey God to be accepted. Grace was a new concept for them, and many struggled with understanding how grace and obedience fit together. Some made the mistake of thinking that once they had acceptance in Jesus, obedience didn’t matter after all.
This greatly concerned James—Jesus’ half-brother and a leader in the church at Jerusalem—so he wrote a letter to the Jewish Christians scattered throughout the Roman Empire. James wanted these Christians to understand that grace and obedience do not work against each other; they work with each other.
James wrote, “Be doers of the word. If you hear the word but don’t do it, you fool yourselves. Anyone who is a hearer but not a doer is like someone who looks at himself in a mirror, goes away and forgets right away what he looked like.”
James wanted Christians to realize that true faith in Jesus—a faith that comes by grace—will always lead to action. True faith is an active faith.
James gave an example: When we look into a mirror and see something is not right—our hair is out of place or food is stuck in our teeth—we don’t just walk away; we fix it. The gospel is like that mirror. It shows us what is true about ourselves, and when we see we are not living out our true identity, we should want to address it.
Help kids understand that true faith in Jesus always leads to living differently. When we trust in Jesus, God changes our hearts so that we will want to live a life pleasing to Him. We aren’t accepted by God because of our obedience; we obey God out of gratitude because we are accepted by Him through Jesus.
Praise God for His attributes: holiness, greatness, grace, love, mercy, etc.
Thank God for sending His Son Jesus to save us from our sins.
Thank God for His goodness, provision, forgiveness, etc.
Thank God for carrying us through 2020.
Ask God for His Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts, minds, and spirits to worship God and learn the lesson He has for us today.
God, we are here to worship, adore, and exalt You. Speak and teach us through Your Word. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
You may ask all the kids to take turn to pray as well.
Leader: All believers are members of one body—Christ’s body, the church. Jesus is the head of the church. When we trust in Jesus, we show our faith by living it out. Every part of the body plays an important role in God’s mission to take the gospel to all nations. Let’s sing our key passage song to help us remember this verse. Let's all sing “We Who are Many" (Romans 12:5).”
Leader: Sometimes we sing songs so many times that we don’t pay attention to the words anymore. As we sing together today, think about each word you sing and how it brings you closer to God, who loves you and defends you. He gave His Son, Jesus, for you. Let’s sing together “One Foundation.”
Share praises from this past week of what you see God's been doing in your lives.
Confess and repent of our sins. Pray to God for His holiness and purity in our lives.
Ask God to forgive us, and ask the Holy Spirit to help us in self-control.
Share prayer requests with each other. Pray for each other.
Ask God to give wisdom for parents, school teachers and kids for virtual learning to manage time, technology, and meals for this semester.
Let's pray that God will raise many good Christian men and women to serve in public offices, so that the ones who govern over us would fear the Lord, walk humbly, and act justly.
Father God, today’s Bible story is a powerful one that really causes us to take a good look at ourselves to see if we are doing what Your Word says. Help us see where we fall short of being doers of the word. And for those here who don’t know Your Son, Jesus, as Savior, open their eyes to Your truths. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Christ Connection: Jesus said, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word” (John 14:23). James reminded believers to be doers of the word. Jesus rescues us from sin and frees us to live a life that honors God. By doing what is good and right, people who trust Jesus can show that they really believe in Him.
Guide kids to open their Bibles to James 2. Challenge kids to name the New Testament books that come before James. (Matthew–Hebrews)
Explain that James wrote to Jewish Christians living in and around Jerusalem. James told them that simply saying you believe in Jesus is not enough; true believers must allow Jesus to change how they live.
Choose a volunteer to read aloud James 2:14, 17, 24, 26, and emphasize on the words faith or works.
LEADER SAY • James wrote about faith and works. These things go together. You are not saved by works, but we are called to be doers of the word. James said that faith without works is useless.
(Take your time to ask, let the kids to ponder and answer the following questions)
Lead kids to recognize that when we trust in Jesus, He gives us the Holy Spirit who helps us live holy lives. By allowing the Holy Spirit to help us do what is good and right, people who trust Jesus can show that they really believe in Him.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Heb. 13:20-21.)
Help kids recall that James says if we just listen to God’s teaching but don’t do what it says, we fool ourselves. When we listen and take action, we will be blessed. Works is proof that our faith is real. What sets us apart from demons is not that we believe God exists but that we have faith in Him and live to honor Him.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read James 2:18-19.)
Guide kids to discuss how what we believe affects how we live. We sit in a chair or ride in a car because we believe it is safe and reliable. We brush our teeth because we believe doing so will keep cavities away. We obey God’s Word because we trust that He is Lord, and He is good.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Eph. 2:8-10.)
Leader: Church planters Philip and Jummai Nache (NAH ch) have very good news to share with the people of Minneapolis, Minnesota. God provided Jesus to die for our sins and give us eternal life. As they share that gospel message with more people, and those people put their faith in Jesus, the church grows! What is the church? The church is all Christians everywhere, who gather together in their communities to worship and serve God.
The first churches had a lot to learn about how to honor Jesus and do right by others. Ananias and Sapphira lied about their gift to the church. They needed the Holy Spirit to change their hearts so that they would do what is right. For the next few sessions, we’re going to learn about two cities in the U.S. that need more churches and Christians who will help the people living there know Jesus.
Praise and thanksgiving to God that the Holy Spirit helps us to listen and obey God.
Protection from the COVID-19.
Productive at home this week.
