The Good News
After Jesus returned to heaven and sent the Holy Spirit to the apostles, the gospel began to spread. Those who heard the good news at Pentecost included visitors from Rome, and they were likely among the three thousand who believed. (See Acts 2:10,41.) When Paul wrote his letter to the Romans in AD 57, he had never been to Rome. But by that time, Roman believers were meeting in house churches.
Paul wrote his letter in part to explain the essentials of the Christian faith and what it means to live for Jesus. Paul’s words are helpful to Christians today. As you guide kids through Romans 5–6, help them grasp the good news of the gospel. This is the message for which Jesus’ followers gave their lives. This good news changes everything.
First, help kids understand the benefits of believing in Jesus. To appreciate the good news, kids need to understand the bad news: Apart from Jesus, we are dead in our sin—separated from God. We need to be rescued. God sent Jesus into the world to rescue sinners. When we trust in His death and resurrection, we are made right with God and are saved from sin and death.
Next, compare and contrast the first Adam with Jesus—“the second Adam.” Adam represented all people, but he sinned. Sin brought death into the world, and death spread to all people because all people sinned. Jesus came to bring us life. He obeyed God perfectly. All who trust in Him are forgiven and have eternal life.
Finally, introduce how believers deal with sin in view of God’s grace. Since our sin is forgiven, should we keep on sinning? Paul was emphatic that the answer is no. When we are in Christ, we are no longer slaves to sin. Sin will still be a struggle in our fallen world, but we have power through the Holy Spirit to resist sin and live a life that honors God.
Praise God for His attributes: holiness, greatness, grace, love, mercy, etc.
Thank God for sending His Son Jesus to save us from our sins.
Thank God for His goodness, provision, forgiveness, etc.
Thank God for carrying us through 2020.
Ask God for His Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts, minds, and spirits to worship God and learn the lesson He has for us today.
God, we are here to worship, adore, and exalt You. Speak and teach us through Your Word. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
You may ask all the kids to take turn to pray as well.
Leader: When we believe the good news about Jesus, we become part of God’s family. We are part of the body of Christ, the church. What is the church? The church is all Christians everywhere, who gather together in their communities to worship and serve God. Let's all sing “We Who are Many" (Romans 12:5).”
Leader: The bad news is that we all are sinners who deserve death. The good news is that God loves us, and God sent Jesus into the world to rescue sinners. Let’s sing together “One Foundation.”
Share praises from this past week of what you see God's been doing in your lives.
Confess and repent of our sins. Pray to God for His holiness and purity in our lives.
Ask God to forgive us, and ask the Holy Spirit to help us in self-control.
Share prayer requests with each other. Pray for each other.
Ask God to give wisdom for parents, school teachers and kids for virtual learning to manage time, technology, and meals for this semester.
Let's pray that God will raise many good Christian men and women to serve in public offices, so that the ones who govern over us would fear the Lord, walk humbly, and act justly.
Father God, we come to You aware of our need for forgiveness. Our sin keeps us far from You and lost in darkness. Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to rescue us. You bring us into the light and make us part of Your family. You love us so much. Give us boldness to share this good news with the world. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Christ Connection: Because God created everything, He is in charge of everything. Everyone sins, or disobeys God. Our sin separates us from God. The good news of the gospel is that God sent His Son, Jesus, to take the punishment we deserve. Everyone who trusts in Jesus will be saved.
Guide kids to open their Bibles to Romans 5. Explain that Romans is the first of Paul’s letters in the New Testament. Explain that when Paul wrote this letter, he had never visited Rome, but Christians were living there. The gospel had made it to Rome after people heard the good news in Jerusalem at Pentecost and then went home and told others.
Choose a volunteer to read aloud Romans 5:6-8.
LEADER SAY • The good news of the gospel is that God sent Jesus into the world to rescue sinners.
(Take your time to ask, let the kids to ponder and answer the following questions)
Lead kids to discuss that everyone sins, or disobeys God. Our sin separates us from God. Consider prompting kids to identify that sin and death came into the world through Adam.
(Option: Choose a kid to read Rom. 3:23; 6:23.)
God is holy and must punish sin. Guide them to explain how God provided by sending His Son, Jesus, to take the punishment we deserve by dying on the cross. When we trust in Him, God forgives our sin and gives us eternal life. Consider prompting kids to identify that life and salvation came into the world through Jesus.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read 1 John 1:9.)
Hearing and believing the gospel is a matter of life and death. Without the good news, we face eternity apart from God. God provided a Rescuer in Jesus, and He calls us to respond to the gospel and share the good news with others so they can be saved too.
(Option: Choose a kid to read Rom. 10:14-15.)
Leader: Church planters Philip and Jummai Nache (NAH ch) have very good news to share with the people of Minneapolis, Minnesota. God provided Jesus to die for our sins and give us eternal life. As they share that gospel message with more people, and those people put their faith in Jesus, the church grows! What is the church? The church is all Christians everywhere, who gather together in their communities to worship and serve God.
The first churches had a lot to learn about how to honor Jesus and do right by others. Ananias and Sapphira lied about their gift to the church. They needed the Holy Spirit to change their hearts so that they would do what is right. For the next few sessions, we’re going to learn about two cities in the U.S. that need more churches and Christians who will help the people living there know Jesus.
Praise and thanksgiving to God that the Holy Spirit helps us to listen and obey God.
Protection from the COVID-19.
Productive at home this week.
For others who are sick or lost of job.
For the United States to turn back to honor and follow God.
