Jesus is Better
Hebrews was a letter written to encourage believers to not only stand strong in their faith but also to grow in their faith. More than anything else, though, the writer of Hebrews preached the superiority of Jesus: Jesus was present at the creation of the world. He is the heir of all things and God spoke to the people through Him.
Because the writer of Hebrews was writing to a mostly Jewish audience, he used the history and heroes of the Old Testament to show how Jesus fulfilled all of God’s promises to send a Messiah to save His people. As you introduce kids to the Book of Hebrews, concentrate on a major theme found in chapters 1–8: Jesus is better.
Jesus is better than angels. He is the Son of God. He is better than Moses and the Mosaic covenant. Jesus completely fulfilled the covenant of the Old Testament; that made Jesus’ new covenant far better. Jesus is better than the tabernacle and the priests.
Because of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, the people no longer needed priests to speak to God for them or to offer sacrifices to take away their sins. These Old Testament figures, laws, and traditions pointed forward to someone better: Jesus.
Emphasize to kids that Jesus is better than anyone and anything. He is the better Prophet, the better Priest, and the better King. Everyone who trusts in Jesus has salvation from sin through His perfect life, death, and resurrection. As the church, Jesus calls us to share the gospel with the world. Jesus is the superior solution to the problem of sin. He is all that is needed for salvation.
Praise God for His attributes: holiness, greatness, grace, love, mercy, etc.
Thank God for sending His Son Jesus to save us from our sins.
Thank God for His goodness, provision, forgiveness, etc.
Thank You God for Spring Break so that we can have a productive rest from school to be with our families in the Lord.
Ask God for His Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts, minds, and spirits to worship God and learn the lesson He has for us today.
God, we are here to worship, adore, and exalt You. Speak and teach us through Your Word. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
You may ask all the kids to take turn to pray as well.
Let's dwell on the holiness of God and His expectation of us, too.
Leader: The Lord reigns! One day, people from every tongue, tribe, and nation will worship around the throne of God. No one compares to Him. In our Bible story, we will see that Jesus is the better Prophet, the better Priest, and the better King. Jesus reigns over sin and death, and all who trust in Him receive salvation and the eternal hope that we will live with Him forever.
Let's all sing “Rejoice, Be Glad" (1 Chronicles 16:31).
Leader: We have so many reasons to praise the Lord! He is the King of kings and Lord of lords! Through Him, we have salvation, hope, peace, and confidence. He is the only One who deserves our worship and praise.
Let’s sing together “Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy.”
Invite kids to pray items below:
Share praises from this past week of what God did in your lives.
Confess and repent of our sins. Pray to God for His holiness and purity in our lives.
Ask God to forgive us, and ask the Holy Spirit to help us in self-control.
Share prayer requests with each other. Pray for each other.
Ask God to give wisdom for parents, school teachers and kids for work, in-person and virtual learning to manage time, technology, and meals for this semester.
Let's pray for the pastors, ministers and elders of our church. And continue to pray that God will raise many good Christian men and women to serve in in the church, so that the ones who serve over us would fear the Lord, walk humbly, and act justly.
God, thank You for sending Jesus — the better Prophet, Priest, and King. Thank You for sending Him as the perfect sacrifice for our sins. In Him, we have victory over sin and death. Our hope is found only in You. May we live our lives in a way that is pleasing and honoring to You. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
Christ Connection: The early believers faced great hardship and persecution. In their frustration, many believers considered whether following Jesus was worth it. Christian leaders wrote letters to encourage the early believers with the truth that Jesus is better than anyone and anything. He is the better Prophet, the better Priest, and the better King. Everyone who trusts in Jesus has salvation from sin through His perfect life, death, and resurrection.
Guide kids to open their Bibles to Hebrews 1. Explain that Hebrews is found in the New Testament. While we don’t know specifically who wrote the Book of Hebrews, we do know that it was written by a Christian, guided by the Holy Spirit, to encourage early believers to continue in the faith.
Choose a volunteer to read aloud Hebrews 1:3.
LEADER SAY • Every blessing we have is because of who Jesus is. He is better than anyone and anything.
(Take your time to ask, let the kids to ponder and answer the following questions)
Help kids recognize that Jesus lived on earth as a human and was tempted. But unlike earthly high priests, Jesus never sinned; therefore, He knows how we can be tempted and is able to help.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Heb. 4:15-16.)
Let kids share their thoughts.
Point out that Jesus is better than anything and anyone. He is faithful, unchanging, and always keeps His promises. He alone is our source of hope and peace in times of trouble. We have salvation through Him and confidence of eternal life with Him.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Eph. 1:7-10.)
Help kids recognize that God speaks to us through His Word, the Bible. The Bible is not an old book that no longer applies to us, but it is the Word of God written for us so that we can know who God is and His will for our lives.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Heb. 4:12-13.)
LEADER: Jesus is God the Son and is like God in every way. He is better than prophets, priests, and kings. Because He is better, we can trust Him for salvation and press on following Him, even through difficult times.
Leader Say: As you watch this video, think about their attitude when competing. Is it OK to want to be the best?
After the video, discuss what it means to show humility and what attitudes they might need to ask God to change in them.
Leader: We’ve been learning about church planting missionaries in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Wiltons tell people there about Jesus. Jesus, our great High Priest, brought a better covenant. Let’s find out more about the city where the Wiltons are helping people to know that Jesus is better than anyone else.
Watch the missions video. Then pray for the Wiltons and any missionaries your church supports.
Invite kids to tell you some things they might know about the state of Pennsylvania or the city of Pittsburgh. Kids might be able to name a sports team or recall an historical fact they’ve learned in school.
Leader: The gospel is for all people. That’s why missionaries serve around the world. They want to bring the good news of Jesus to everyone. Let’s find out more about missionaries who are starting churches in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Praise and thanksgiving to God that the Holy Spirit helps us to listen and obey God.
