Jesus was Questioned
The religious leaders despised Jesus. He was a threat to their power, and they didn’t believe He was the Messiah. The Jews decided to confront Jesus with questions. Perhaps He would misspeak, and they could trap Him with His words. The Pharisees’ disciples asked Him, “Teacher, is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
As far as these men were concerned, Jesus could not give a satisfactory answer to this question. If Jesus said God’s law required them to pay taxes to Caesar, they could get the Jewish people—who hated paying taxes to the Romans—to turn away from Jesus. If Jesus said God’s law did not require them to pay taxes to Caesar, they could convince the Romans to arrest Jesus. But Jesus answered wisely: “Give … to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Matt. 22:21). The men were speechless, and they left.
Then an expert in the law asked Jesus which command in God’s law is most important. The Pharisees knew the law well and felt prepared to argue. Jesus quoted from Deuteronomy 6:5: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” Then He emphasized a second command: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Lev. 19:18). These commands summarize the rest of the law, and the Pharisees could not object.
Jesus turned the tables and asked the Pharisees about the Messiah: “Whose son is he?” The Pharisees recognized the Messiah as the son of David. Jesus referred to Psalm 110, in which David calls the Messiah “Lord.” Why would he do that? The Pharisees had no answer. As fully man, Jesus is the son of David. But as fully God, He is greater than David; He is Lord. No one dared to question Jesus again.
Christ Connection: When the religious leaders questioned Jesus, He answered with wisdom and power. Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. He has authority in heaven and on earth.
Praise God for His attributes: holiness, greatness, grace, mercy, etc.
Thank God for His goodness, provision, etc.
Ask God for His Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts, minds, and spirits to worship God and learn the lesson He has for us today.
God, thank You that out of Your love for us, You provided Your Son as the Messiah, the One who saves us from our sins. Thank You for being the eternal King who will reign over all. May we welcome You as King in every part of our lives. We love You, Lord. Amen.
You may ask all the kids to take turn to pray as well.
Leader: Our key passage says that Jesus was obedient. Who do you think He was obeying? [Allow kids to respond.] Jesus obeyed His Father, God. Throughout His whole life and ministry on earth, Jesus was obedient to His Father. He obeyed “to the point of death—even to death on a cross.”
Share with each other how you can obey God this week. (Ex: A way to obey God is by obeying parents). After sharing, let's all sing “He Humbled Himself (Philippians 2:8).”
When the religious leaders questioned Jesus, Jesus spoke with wisdom and authority. Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. He is the Word of God, who came to show us exactly what God is like. Jesus has authority in heaven and on earth. Let’s praise Him as our Savior, whom God has given all authority. Let’s sing together “Jesus Saves.”
Share praises from this past week of what you see God's been doing in your lives.
Confess and repent of our sins. Pray to God for His holiness and purity in our lives.
Ask God to forgive us, and ask the Holy Spirit to help to control us.
Share prayer requests with each other. Pray for each other.
Ask God to give wisdom for parents, school teachers and kids for virtual learning to manage time, technology, and meals for this semester.
Ask God for protection for those back to school and work physically from the COVID-19 virus.
Let's pray for the quick and complete healing of our President and Mrs. Trump from the COVID-19 virus.
God, thank You for sending Jesus to earth, for allowing Him to be with us and display His wisdom and authority on earth and in heaven. Give us Your wisdom as we go through our week. We want to be good representatives of You to those around us. We praise You and give You honor, Lord.
Distribute Bibles. Guide your children to open their Bibles to Matthew 22. Today's story is found in three of the four books in the New Testament called the Gospels.
Choose a volunteer to read aloud Matthew 22:22.
LEADER SAY • Sometimes the same story is found in two, three, or even all four of the Gospels. Each writer highlights different parts of the story. This gives us even more detail as we look into each account of the story recorded in different Gospels. All of the stories in God’s Word point to the same question and answer: What did Jesus do to save us? Jesus lived a sinless life, died on the cross, and rose from the dead.
(Take your time to ask, ponder and answer the following questions)
Lead kids to recall that the religious leaders were only questioning Jesus to try to catch Him doing something wrong. Jesus knew what they were trying to do and answered them with wisdom and authority.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Luke 20:22-26.)
Help kids recognize the religious leaders thought they had come up a question that would trap Jesus when they chose to ask Him about taxes. They thought either way He answered, the Jews or the Romans would have a problem with it; however, Jesus saw beyond their craftiness and answered with wisdom and power.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Luke 20:25.)
Help kids recognize that we can find the answers to life’s questions as we spend time with the Lord through prayer and reading His Word. When we hide God’s Word in our heart, we too can answer with wisdom.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Ps. 119:105.)
Praise and thanksgiving to God that His Son was born to save and redeem us.
Protection from the COVID-19.
Productive at home this week.
For others who are sick or lost of job.
Wisdom for government officials and President Trump and VP Pence.
Wisdom for Governor Greg Abbott of Texas.
Wisdom for church leaders about ministering online, and reopening of church gatherings.
The musical is told from the Apostle John's perspective while he was in his old age in exile on the island of Patmos. John is rather humorous and engaging with the audience. But a word of caution: The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is "semi-gory" and might be disturbing to younger kids, K and under. Parental preview is advised (starts at 1:19:09). But then again, the crucifixion is real and Christ died to pay the death we all deserve.... As we're going through this unit in Kids Church, I pray you will take those many spiritual, Gospel moments that God provides to teach, and lead your child(ren) to salvation in Jesus Christ.
From the Production: A livestream of the 2020 Thorn production. This video was shot at one of our final dress rehearsals before the tour was cancelled. Though it's not DVD-quality audio or edits, we wanted to share the power of Jesus' love as told through this amazing cast & crew. Happy Easter! He is Risen. (special thanks to Matt Doyon for his help in getting this footage shot and posted!)
