Volume 9: Jesus the Savior. Unit 26: To the Cross. Session 4 of 5
Jesus was Arrested
The Pharisees and other Jews in Jerusalem did not like Jesus. He didn’t play by their rules (Matt. 12:1-14), He claimed to be God (John 8:58-59; 10:22-33), and He extended salvation beyond the Jewish people (Luke 4:27). So they plotted several times how they might kill Him.
The events leading up to His death did not surprise Jesus. Each step was part of God’s established plan. (See Isa. 53:10; Acts 2:23.) But knowing God’s plan didn’t lessen Jesus’ suffering as He was betrayed by His friends, arrested, falsely accused, and beaten. As you teach kids about the arrest of Jesus, help them understand the gravity of the events.
First, Jesus wanted to do God’s plan. Jesus came to earth to rescue people from sin. He was committed to doing the Father’s will. (Matt. 26:39,42) When Judas showed up with a crowd, Jesus didn’t run. He didn’t even allow Peter to stand in His defense. (Matt. 26:52) Jesus willingly gave Himself up for us because He loves us. (Eph. 5:2)
Second, Jesus was betrayed and arrested even though He did nothing wrong. The Jews tried to find a legitimate reason to kill Jesus, but they couldn’t find one. (Matt. 26:59-60) Jesus did what we failed to do; He perfectly obeyed the law. His arrest was not just. The trial was not fair. But this had to happen. Only a sinless, perfect sacrifice could take away sin. (Heb. 9:11-14)
Finally, Jesus is who He says He is. After Jesus’ arrest, the high priest asked Jesus if He was the Son of God. Jesus affirmed that He is. (Matt. 26:64) The high priest accused Him of blasphemy (speaking against God), but Jesus always told the truth.
Christ Connection: Jesus knew that His death was God’s plan to save people from sin. Jesus’ friends turned against Him and He was arrested and put on trial, but Jesus followed His Father’s plan in order to bring salvation to the world.
Praise God for His attributes: holiness, greatness, grace, mercy, etc.
Thank God for His goodness, provision, etc.
Ask God for His Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts, minds, and spirits to worship God and learn the lesson He has for us today.
God, we are here to worship and exalt You. Speak and teach us through Your Word. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
You may ask all the kids to take turn to pray as well.
Leader: We see Jesus’ humility in our Bible story today by the way Jesus allowed His enemies to arrest Him. Even though Jesus was perfect and completely undeserving of arrest, He humbled Himself out of obedience to His Father and His love for us.
What does this verse mean when it says Jesus was “obedient to the point of death—even to death on a cross”? [Allow kids to respond.] Jesus obeyed God’s plan even though it meant suffering and dying for our sins. let's all sing “He Humbled Himself (Philippians 2:8).”
The payment for sin is death, but in God’s extravagant mercy and grace, He sent His Son, Jesus, to pay the cost for our sins and give us eternal life. Praise the Lord for His love for us! Let’s sing together “Jesus Saves.”
Share praises from this past week of what you see God's been doing in your lives.
Confess and repent of our sins. Pray to God for His holiness and purity in our lives.
Ask God to forgive us, and ask the Holy Spirit to help to control us.
Share prayer requests with each other. Pray for each other.
Ask God to give wisdom for parents, school teachers and kids for virtual learning to manage time, technology, and meals for this semester.
Ask God for protection for those back to school and work physically from the COVID-19 virus.
Let's pray for Christians when they vote for the president of the USA that they would use biblical principles and godly values.
God, thank You for Your mercy and grace. You did not leave us on our own in our sin but provided the way of salvation through Jesus. Only You can save and give us eternal life. Help us live our lives in obedience and service to You and tell others about the free gift of salvation. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Distribute Bibles. Guide your children to open their Bibles to Matthew 26. Matthew is part of the four Gospels, which tell the story of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.
Choose a volunteer to read aloud Matthew 26:63-64.
LEADER SAY • Jesus allowed His enemies to arrest Him. In this way, He willingly laid down His life out of His love for us. We can share the good news about Jesus with others, laying down our lives for those around us by putting others before ourselves.
(Take your time to ask, let the kids to ponder and answer the following questions)
Help kids recognize that Jesus could have chosen not to be arrested. He is all-powerful. His enemies did not trap Him or catch Him. He willingly allowed them to arrest Him out of His humility and obedience to the Father. Because of His love for us, He laid down His life.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read John 15:13.)
Lead kids to recall that Messiah means “the anointed one” or the “promised deliverer.” Did these definitions fit Jesus?
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Acts 3:18.)
Invite kids to share their ideas. Discuss how we can lay down our lives for others by making choices to place others before ourselves.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read 1 John 3:16.)
Imagine being born into a world of poverty with a serious physical disability. This was the beginning for Lisa Olson, born without limbs in 1974. She was abandoned by her parents at a hospital in Manipal, India, where most of the doctors felt there was no point in keeping her alive.
But Dr. Kuruvilla George believed that God had a purpose for Lisa’s life. He contacted the Ramabai Mukti Mission to find a special place for her and then traveled 37 grueling hours to bring her there. Her name was changed to “Manyata,” meaning “acceptance” in the Marathi language.

The Mukti officials believed that Lisa required more extensive care, available in the United States. The only way that Lisa could travel to America was if she was adopted.
Marie Olson, clearly heard the Lord’s voice to adopt Lisa and bring her home to America. She changed her daughter’s name to Lisa Manyata Olson. As she matured Lisa developed a passion to help others learn to overcome their disabilities or obstacles.
Through Manyata Ministries℠, she travels the world and shares this message of love with people struggling with life’s difficulties. Lisa has spoken to churches, retreats, schools, women in prison, wounded soldiers and additional groups.
In her motivational messages, Lisa shares the story of her disability, its challenges, the life lessons she has learned and the opportunities she has been given. Lisa’s life clearly demonstrates her identity in God and ultimate dependence and trust in Him to overcome challenges and adversity. You will be touched, moved and inspired by her story.
Missionary Eric Liddell sacrificed everything, even his life, to obey God in China. Jesus sacrificed His life for us. God asks us to be willing to sacrifice everything to tell others about Jesus.

Video 1 is Peter's Denial, and video 2 is Jesus' Arrest (first half), and trial, crucifixion, and resurrection (second half). Video 3 in Chinese!
The musical is told from the Apostle John's perspective while he was in his old age in exile on the island of Patmos. John is rather humorous and engaging with the audience. But a word of caution: The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is "semi-gory" and might be disturbing to younger kids, K and under. Parental preview is advised (starts at 1:19:09). But then again, the crucifixion is real and Christ died to pay the death we all deserve.... As we're going through this unit in Kids Church, I pray you will take those many spiritual, Gospel moments that God provides to teach, and lead your child(ren) to salvation in Jesus Christ.
From the Production: A livestream of the 2020 Thorn production. This video was shot at one of our final dress rehearsals before the tour was cancelled. Though it's not DVD-quality audio or edits, we wanted to share the power of Jesus' love as told through this amazing cast & crew. Happy Easter! He is Risen. (special thanks to Matt Doyon for his help in getting this footage shot and posted!)
