Jesus' Crucifixion
Jesus’ crucifixion, burial, and resurrection are the center of the gospel. Jesus accomplished the plan God had been working out throughout the Old Testament to bring salvation to sinners, and it happened in such an unlikely way.
In the Book of Acts, Peter testified to the Israelites about Jesus’ death: “Though He was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail Him to a cross and kill Him” (Acts 2:23). Crucifixion was a horrific way to die. As you teach kids, rather than focus on the graphic details of how Jesus died, emphasize why He died. Two primary reasons stand out: God is loving, and God is just.
First, God is loving. He sent His Son to be the Savior of the world because He loves us. (See John 3:16; Rom. 5:8; 1 John 4:10.) Jesus submitted to the Father’s will; He humbled Himself and came to earth as a man, and He laid down His life because He loves us. (Eph. 5:2)
Jesus lived the perfect life we failed to live and died the guilty death we don’t want to die. Those who trust in Him receive forgiveness and eternal life.
Second, God is just. God’s law for the people was plain. (See Deuteronomy 6:5.) But God’s people, and all people, broke the law. We have loved other things more than we love God. That is sin. So why did Jesus have to die? Why couldn’t He just say, “You are forgiven”? Because God is just, He requires due payment for sin. To simply forgive sin without requiring a payment would be unjust.
Jesus was our substitute, taking our place on the cross and absorbing God’s wrath on our behalf so we can be forgiven and declared righteous. (See Rom. 3:25-26; Col. 2:13-15.) Jesus died to rescue sinners from slavery to sin, and when we trust in Him, we are free indeed.
Christ Connection: We deserve to die because of our sin, but God loves us and kept His promise to send a Savior. Jesus never sinned, but He died in our place. He was the blood sacrifice made once and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Jesus rose from the dead on the third day, and those who trust in Him have forgiveness and eternal life.
Praise God for His attributes: holiness, greatness, grace, mercy, etc.
Thank God for His goodness, provision, etc.
Ask God for His Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts, minds, and spirits to worship God and learn the lesson He has for us today.
God, we are here to worship, adore, and exalt You. Speak and teach us through Your Word. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
You may ask all the kids to take turn to pray as well.
Leader: Our key passage tells us that Jesus humbled Himself and was obedient to His Father, even when it meant His death. Jesus willingly laid down His life to fulfill God’s plan of salvation. We deserve death for our sin, but praise the Lord for sending His perfect Son to take the punishment we deserve. let's all sing “He Humbled Himself (Philippians 2:8).”
Jesus died on the cross to pay for our sins. Only He could provide a way of salvation and eternal life. Let’s praise the Lamb of God who was slain for us! Let’s sing together “Jesus Saves.”
Share praises from this past week of what you see God's been doing in your lives.
Confess and repent of our sins. Pray to God for His holiness and purity in our lives.
Ask God to forgive us, and ask the Holy Spirit to help to control us.
Share prayer requests with each other. Pray for each other.
Ask God to give wisdom for parents, school teachers and kids for virtual learning to manage time, technology, and meals for this semester.
Ask God for protection for those back to school and work physically from the COVID-19 virus.
Let's pray for Christians when they vote for the president of the USA that they would use biblical principles and godly values.
God, thank You for Your mercy and grace. You did not leave us on our own in our sin but provided the way of salvation through Jesus. Only You can save and give us eternal life. Help us live our lives in obedience and service to You and tell others about the free gift of salvation. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Distribute Bibles. Guide your children to open their Bibles to John 19. Remind kids that John—like Matthew, Mark, and Luke—is about Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. These four books are called the Gospels.
Choose a volunteer to read aloud John 19:30.
LEADER SAY • “It is finished!” Those were the last words Jesus spoke before He died. He declared victory with those words. He had obeyed the Father and paid the punishment for sin.
We don’t have to work to be accepted by God. We can trust in Jesus, who did the work for us by living a perfect life. It is finished now and forever!!
(Take your time to ask, let the kids to ponder and answer the following questions)
Recall that because of our sin, we deserve to die. But God loves us and sent Jesus to take the punishment in our place. We are saved only through the sinless Lamb of God’s death on the cross. He lived a perfect life, and salvation is found only in Him.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Acts 4:12.)
Lead kids to recognize that the curtain that was torn separated the area in the temple called the Holy of Holies from the other areas of the temple. Only the high priest was allowed to enter this room and only at certain times. But when Jesus declared “It is finished!” the curtain tore, showing that all who receive His salvation have full access to God the Father.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Heb. 4:16.)
Help kids recognize that we don’t have to work to earn God’s acceptance. Salvation is a gift from Jesus. Kids must respond to this good news. If they have received this gift by trusting in Jesus’ work for them, Jesus calls them to share this good news with others.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Acts 1:8.)
Imagine being born into a world of poverty with a serious physical disability. This was the beginning for Lisa Olson, born without limbs in 1974. She was abandoned by her parents at a hospital in Manipal, India, where most of the doctors felt there was no point in keeping her alive.
But Dr. Kuruvilla George believed that God had a purpose for Lisa’s life. He contacted the Ramabai Mukti Mission to find a special place for her and then traveled 37 grueling hours to bring her there. Her name was changed to “Manyata,” meaning “acceptance” in the Marathi language.

The Mukti officials believed that Lisa required more extensive care, available in the United States. The only way that Lisa could travel to America was if she was adopted.
Marie Olson, clearly heard the Lord’s voice to adopt Lisa and bring her home to America. She changed her daughter’s name to Lisa Manyata Olson. As she matured Lisa developed a passion to help others learn to overcome their disabilities or obstacles.
Through Manyata Ministries℠, she travels the world and shares this message of love with people struggling with life’s difficulties. Lisa has spoken to churches, retreats, schools, women in prison, wounded soldiers and additional groups.
In her motivational messages, Lisa shares the story of her disability, its challenges, the life lessons she has learned and the opportunities she has been given. Lisa’s life clearly demonstrates her identity in God and ultimate dependence and trust in Him to overcome challenges and adversity. You will be touched, moved and inspired by her story.
Missionary Eric Liddell sacrificed everything, even his life, to obey God in China. Jesus sacrificed His life for us. God asks us to be willing to sacrifice everything to tell others about Jesus.
Praise and thanksgiving to God that His Son was born to save and redeem us.

The musical is told from the Apostle John's perspective while he was in his old age in exile on the island of Patmos. John is rather humorous and engaging with the audience. But a word of caution: The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is "semi-gory" and might be disturbing to younger kids, K and under. Parental preview is advised (starts at 1:19:09). But then again, the crucifixion is real and Christ died to pay the death we all deserve.... As we're going through this unit in Kids Church, I pray you will take those many spiritual, Gospel moments that God provides to teach, and lead your child(ren) to salvation in Jesus Christ.
From the Production: A livestream of the 2020 Thorn production. This video was shot at one of our final dress rehearsals before the tour was cancelled. Though it's not DVD-quality audio or edits, we wanted to share the power of Jesus' love as told through this amazing cast & crew. Happy Easter! He is Risen. (special thanks to Matt Doyon for his help in getting this footage shot and posted!)
