The Hall of Faith
It is common to think of faith as something that is just within us—trust and confidence in God. While that is surely part of it, faith doesn’t stop there. Faith starts inside of us and always leads to action.
The writer of the Book of Hebrews wanted to explain the fullness of faith to the early Jewish Christians. One of the best ways he could do this was to walk through examples of how men and women in the Old Testament had proven to be faithful. The result is Hebrews 11, often known as the Hall of Faith.
Abel had faith when he gave an offering to God, and God accepted his offering. Noah had faith. He believed God when God told him to build an ark to rescue his family.
Abraham had faith when God called him to leave his home. Abraham’s wife Sarah had faith when she trusted God to give her a family even though she was too old to have children. Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Moses had faith, too. Rahab had faith when she hid the Israelite spies in Jericho.
All of these people trusted God, and so did many others. Having faith was not easy. Many suffered, and they died before God’s greatest promise—the arrival of Jesus—came true, but they believed that God had a wonderful plan. God was pleased with them because they trusted Him.
This week, share the examples of these heroes of faith to help your kids understand faith in action. We can and should learn from these examples; that is why God gave them to us in Hebrews 11. However, emphasize that every person in this list was a sinner in need of salvation. Each of these heroes needed a greater hero. Point your kids to Jesus, the perfect hero who rescues us from sin.
Praise God for His attributes: holiness, greatness, grace, love, mercy, etc.
Thank God for sending His Son Jesus to save us from our sins.
Thank God for His goodness, provision, forgiveness, etc.
Thank You God for for the Spring Season which reminds us of New Life in You. Flowers are budding; trees growing leaves; grass needs to be cut; birds are chirping; people are out walking or on their bikes! Help us to keep You in the center of our lives everyday, hour, minute. Thank You God!
Ask God for His Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts, minds, and spirits to worship God and learn the lesson He has for us today.
God, we are here to worship, adore, and exalt You. Speak and teach us through Your Word. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
You may ask all the kids to take turn to pray as well.
Let's dwell on the holiness of God and His expectation of us, too.
Leader: We can rejoice in the truth that the Lord reigns, and we can trust Him with our lives because He is in control of everything. He promised that He will return one day, claim His people, and reign as the Lord of all. God is trustworthy, and all His promises come true. When we believe who God is, we can live a life of faith, like the men and women in our story today.
Let's all sing “Rejoice, Be Glad" (1 Chronicles 16:31).
Leader: Having faith is not always easy, but trusting God is pleasing to Him and always worth it. Let’s praise the Lord for the gift of salvation we have by grace through faith in Him.
Let’s sing together “Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy.”
Invite kids to pray items below:
Share praises from this past week of what God did in your lives.
Confess and repent of our sins. Pray to God for His holiness and purity in our lives.
Ask God to forgive us, and ask the Holy Spirit to help us in self-control.
Share prayer requests with each other. Pray for each other.
Ask God to give wisdom for parents, school teachers and kids for work, in-person and virtual learning to manage time, technology, and meals for this semester.
Let's pray for the pastors, ministers and elders of our church. And continue to pray that God will raise many good Christian men and women to serve in in the church, so that the ones who serve over us would fear the Lord, walk humbly, and act justly.
Thank You for always keeping Your promises, God. Thank You for reminding us of Your faithfulness as we study Your Word. We know You are the One who gives us faith, so help us have faith even when it is hard. We want to bring honor to You and be used by You. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
Christ Connection: God always had a plan to save people from their sins by sending a Rescuer. God used men and women in the Old Testament to be a part of His story of redemption. God kept His promise to send the Messiah—His own Son, Jesus—to rescue people from sin. Jesus is the true hero of the Bible. He gives us faith. We can look to Him because in Him, all of God’s promises come true.
Guide kids to open their Bibles to Hebrews 11. Explain that the author of Hebrews is never mentioned in the book, but we do know that the author is a believer who came to know Jesus after hearing from people who heard Jesus, as seen in Hebrews 2:3. Like many of the books we have studied over the past weeks, Hebrews was written to encourage Christian believers to hold fast to their faith and deepen their relationship with Jesus.
Choose a volunteer to read aloud Hebrews 11:39-40.
LEADER SAY • All the people we read about in Hebrews 11 pleased God with their faith, even though they all died before they saw God’s great promise fulfilled in Jesus.
(Take your time to ask, let the kids to ponder and answer the following questions)
Lead kids to recognize that faith is believing that everything God says is true and living like we believe it.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Heb. 11:1.)
Remind kids that we must have faith to please God. Putting our faith in Him means we completely trust Him and His plan for us. When we trust in Jesus, God is completely pleased with us. Because we have God’s full acceptance, we should want to live in a way that honors Him.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Heb. 11:6.)
Help kids recognize that sometimes it is hard to have faith, but they don’t have to have faith by their own strength. They can ask God to give them faith. Encourage kids to look for ways they can trust and obey God with whatever is happening in their lives right now.
(Option: Choose a kid to read 1 Tim. 6:11-12.)
LEADER: The Bible says we must have faith to please God. God gives faith and will help us have faith in hard times. God works mightily through people who have faith in Him. We can trust Him with our lives and obey His commands because He is good, and everything He says is true.
Leader Say: As you watch this video, think about how we can believe in something we cannot see.
After the video, discuss & guide them to discuss how they will put their faith into practice this week.
Leader: We’ve been learning about church planting missionaries in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Wiltons tell people there about Jesus. Jesus, our great High Priest, brought a better covenant. Let’s find out more about the city where the Wiltons are helping people to know that Jesus is better than anyone else.
Watch the missions video. Then pray for the Wiltons and any missionaries your church supports.
Invite kids to tell you some things they might know about the state of Pennsylvania or the city of Pittsburgh. Kids might be able to name a sports team or recall an historical fact they’ve learned in school.
Leader: The gospel is for all people. That’s why missionaries serve around the world. They want to bring the good news of Jesus to everyone. Let’s find out more about missionaries who are starting churches in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Praise and thanksgiving to God that the Holy Spirit helps us to listen and obey God.
