New Life in Jesus
Paul wrote his letter to the Colossians while he was imprisoned in Rome. At this point, Paul had not yet visited the church at Colossae. The church was established by Epaphras, who reported to Paul that the church was facing troubles with false teachers. Paul wanted to put an end to the false teaching and remind the believers of who Jesus really is. Key to this letter is Paul’s teaching about how the gospel affects how we live.
As you teach kids from Colossians 2–3, focus on some of the main points Paul makes. First, God changes us when we trust in Jesus. The Bible describes us apart from Jesus as “enemies of God” (Rom. 5:10) and “dead” in our sins (Eph. 2:1). Jesus rescued us from sin and death by dying on the cross and rising again. Jesus gives new life to people who trust in Him.
Second, following Jesus means living for Him. Jesus is our reason for living, and He gives us power to live in a way that honors Him. Jesus adopts us into His family and makes us new! We respond to the good news of the gospel by submitting to Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Finally, Jesus calls us to turn away from our sinful ways and live in a way that honors Him. Paul contrasts an earthly way of thinking with a godly way of thinking. The old, sinful way of living (the “old self”) is characterized by anger, wrath, hatred, lies, and filthy language. Paul wrote that living for Jesus means putting away the evil, selfish ways of the world and living like Jesus by loving God and loving others.
In Jesus, we have power to live in a new, godly way. This way (the “new self”) is marked by compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and love. Paul says believers should “put on” these things. As we grow in this new way of living, God is making us more like His Son.
Praise God for His attributes: holiness, greatness, grace, love, mercy, etc.
Thank God for sending His Son Jesus to save us from our sins.
Thank God for His goodness, provision, forgiveness, etc.
Thank God for carrying us through the past week's freezing winter storm!
Ask God for His Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts, minds, and spirits to worship God and learn the lesson He has for us today.
God, we are here to worship, adore, and exalt You. Speak and teach us through Your Word. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
You may ask all the kids to take turn to pray as well.
Leader: No matter how you say this verse, the message doesn’t change. Jesus is in charge and deserves first place in our lives. Let's all sing “First Place in Everything" (Colossians 1:18).”
Leader: When we trust in Jesus, He gives us new life. One day, Jesus will return and make all things new. He is worthy of our praise and worship! Let’s sing together “One Foundation.”
Invite kids to pray items below:
Share praises from this past week of what you see God's been doing in your lives.
Confess and repent of our sins. Pray to God for His holiness and purity in our lives.
Ask God to forgive us, and ask the Holy Spirit to help us in self-control.
Share prayer requests with each other. Pray for each other.
Ask God to give wisdom for parents, school teachers and kids for work, in-person and virtual learning to manage time, technology, and meals for this semester.
Let's pray for President Biden and Vice-President Harris. And continue to pray that God will raise many good Christian men and women to serve in public offices, so that the ones who govern over us would fear the Lord, walk humbly, and act justly.
Jesus, thank You for loving us enough to die in our place. Show us the things in our lives that need to change so we can be more like You. Help us to be strong in our faith and live for You. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
Christ Connection: God changes us when we trust in Jesus. He adopts us into His family and makes us new! Jesus calls us to turn away from our sinful ways and live in a way that honors Him. Through His power, we can change and live differently. Our lives become part of our testimony of how Jesus has changed us from the inside out.
Guide kids to open their Bibles to the Book of Colossians. Explain Colossians is in the division of the Bible called Paul’s Letters (Epistles).
Choose a volunteer to read aloud Colossians 1:7; 4:12-13.
LEADER SAY • It is believed that Paul wrote this letter to Colossae while he was in prison. We don’t know if Paul actually visited Colossae. Colossians 1:7 says the Colossians learned about Jesus from Epaphras, who most likely learned from Paul while Paul was in Ephesus. Later, Epaphras visited Paul in prison and told him about the church in Colossae. Point out the location of Colossae on Paul's First Missionary Journey Map. Show how it is located in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) on The World of the New Testament map.
(Take your time to ask, let the kids to ponder and answer the following questions)
Help kids recognize Paul wanted to encourage the church and make sure they had a complete understanding of Jesus.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Col. 2:2-3.)
Help kids recognize that everything we do should be done in the name of Jesus.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Col. 3:17.)
Help kids recognize that Jesus wants us to live in Him through faith.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Col. 2:6-7.)
Leader Say: Jesus gives new life to people who trust Him. Our lives should honor Him and point other people to Him.
Leader: Missionaries get to see how Jesus gives new life to people who were dead in sin. Let’s watch how people obey Jesus’ command to follow Him through baptism, which is a way to show other people that they have new life in Jesus. Watch the missions video. If any kids desire to be baptized, talk to your parents first, and parents let Pastor John know. Our church at this point offers baptism to grades 4 and 5 age children. We can consider with exceptions for younger children. "Believe and be baptized!"
The Holy Spirit tells people today to go and tell people about Jesus, like He told Philip to tell the Ethiopian man about Jesus. When Christians work together to share the gospel, we can reach more people all over the world.
Praise and thanksgiving to God that the Holy Spirit helps us to listen and obey God.
