Volume 9: Jesus the Savior. Unit 27: Out of the Grave. Session 1 of 4
Jesus' Resurrection
The time between Friday afternoon and Sunday morning must have been dark hours for Jesus’ disciples. Fear, doubt, and confusion certainly overwhelmed their thoughts. Jesus, their Lord, was dead. He had been unjustly arrested, falsely accused, and severely beaten. Even worse, He had been killed in a horrible manner: by crucifixion.
The story doesn’t end there. Jesus’ body was laid in a tomb. The tomb was sealed and guards watched over it. The Jews remembered Jesus’ claim that He would rise from the dead (John 2:19-21), and they made sure no one could steal His body and insist He had risen. Imagine their surprise when Jesus did rise from the dead!
John and Peter saw the empty tomb. Jesus appeared to Mary. The disciples believed Jesus had risen from the dead. Even though the guards at the tomb were bribed to lie about what happened (they said the disciples stole Jesus’ body), the truth spread. The disciples wouldn’t have dedicated their lives and died for something they knew was a lie.
If Christ had remained dead, His death would have meant nothing more than yours or mine. Humanity would still be dead in sin. But God gives us victory over sin and death through His Son, Jesus. The resurrection gives us hope that we too will one day be raised and changed. (See Rom. 6:5; 8:11)
Paul addressed in 1 Corinthians 15:17 just how essential Jesus’ resurrection is to the gospel: “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.” The resurrection is proof that God was satisfied with Jesus’ sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins and that God’s new covenant had begun.
Emphasize to the kids you teach that Jesus is alive! We believe this by faith. Today, Jesus is seated at the right hand of God and reigns as King over all of creation. (Phil. 2:9-10)
Christ Connection: Jesus died on the cross for our sins, but He didn’t stay dead. God was pleased with Jesus’ sacrifice and raised Jesus from the dead to reign as King over all creation. Jesus provides salvation from sin and the promise of eternal life.
Praise God for His attributes: holiness, greatness, grace, mercy, etc.
Thank God for His goodness, provision, etc.
Ask God for His Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts, minds, and spirits to worship God and learn the lesson He has for us today.
God, we are here to worship, adore, and exalt You. Speak and teach us through Your Word. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
You may ask all the kids to take turn to pray as well.
Leader: Jesus wasn’t surprised by His death and resurrection. Jesus knew ahead of time what would happen and tried to prepare His followers. It wasn’t by accident or coincidence. Jesus’ death and resurrection was part of God’s plan. And you are part of God’s plan. He wants you to have eternal life with Him. let's all sing “Live (John 11:25).”
Jesus willingly gave up His life for us. Then He proved He was God’s Son through His resurrection. Now we have eternal life through Him. That makes me want to worship Him! Let’s sing together “Jesus, Our Savior.”
Share praises from this past week of what you see God's been doing in your lives.
Confess and repent of our sins. Pray to God for His holiness and purity in our lives.
Ask God to forgive us, and ask the Holy Spirit to help to control us.
Share prayer requests with each other. Pray for each other.
Ask God to give wisdom for parents, school teachers and kids for virtual learning to manage time, technology, and meals for this semester.
Ask God for protection for those back to school and work physically from the COVID-19 virus.
Let's pray that God's justice will prevail for the next president during this unprecedented time of ballot counting.
God, thank You for Your mercy and grace. You did not leave us on our own in our sin but provided the way of salvation through Jesus. Only You can save and give us eternal life. Help us live our lives in obedience and service to You and tell others about the free gift of salvation. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Distribute Bibles. Guide your children to open their Bibles to Matthew 28:1-10 and John 20:1-18. Help them compare the two accounts of Jesus’ resurrection. Which details are included in both books? Which are in only one?
Remind kids that the Holy Spirit prompted people to write the Bible. Matthew and John wrote about Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. Each writer included details that were most important to him — just as if your family members were to tell about what they did the last time you went to the zoo, you all might each focus on something different. Both accounts are correct because the Bible is God’s Word. It is completely true.
Choose a volunteer to read aloud Matthew 28:1-10 and John 20:1-18.
LEADER SAY • Christians have hope because Jesus is alive. God raised Jesus from the dead to defeat sin and death. Because Jesus rose from the dead, we know that He fully paid for our sins and defeated sin and death. God was pleased with Jesus’ sacrifice and raised Jesus from the dead to reign as King over all creation.
(Take your time to ask, let the kids to ponder and answer the following questions)
Lead kids to recognize that Jesus died to pay the penalty for our sins. He took the punishment we deserve. God’s raising Jesus from the dead proves that His payment for sins was sufficient and final.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Heb. 10:10.)
Guide kids to understand that though our bodies may die on earth, we will live with God forever. When Jesus returns, believers who have died will be raised and all believers will receive new, transformed bodies that will never die.
(Option: Choose a kid to read 1 Cor. 15:51-52.)
Help kids recognize that the more we understand Jesus’ forgiveness, the more our love for Him grows. Because Jesus died for us, we live for Him.
(Option: Choose a volunteer to read Luke 7:47.)
Praise and thanksgiving to God that His Son was born to save and redeem us.
Protection from the COVID-19.

Wisdom for church leaders about ministering online, and reopening of church gatherings.
The musical is told from the Apostle John's perspective while he was in his old age in exile on the island of Patmos. John is rather humorous and engaging with the audience. But a word of caution: The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is "semi-gory" and might be disturbing to younger kids, K and under. Parental preview is advised (starts at 1:19:09). But then again, the crucifixion is real and Christ died to pay the death we all deserve.... As we're going through this unit in Kids Church, I pray you will take those many spiritual, Gospel moments that God provides to teach, and lead your child(ren) to salvation in Jesus Christ.
From the Production: A livestream of the 2020 Thorn production. This video was shot at one of our final dress rehearsals before the tour was cancelled. Though it's not DVD-quality audio or edits, we wanted to share the power of Jesus' love as told through this amazing cast & crew. Happy Easter! He is Risen. (special thanks to Matt Doyon for his help in getting this footage shot and posted!)
