The Nimitz Elementary team prides itself on carrying out an educational program of excellence while maintaining a nurturing culture for students. We are always open to individuals who want to join the team, but may not always have openings. Community Volunteer- If you would like to be a volunteer, we are open to having volunteers help in our classrooms or on campus. Opportunities for volunteering help come on an as-needed basis, therefore they may not present themselves immediately after inquiring. It should be noted that we prefer to work with volunteers from our families or school community. Volunteers are NOT monetarily compensated for their services.
Adult Supervisor- Adult Supervisors work strictly in a supervisory and non-educational assistance role. At Nimitz Elementary, adult supervisors are primarily used in the cafeteria to help supervise, and provide meal consumption assistance. However, adult supervisors may be asked to provide supervision in other unstructured times such as recess or assemblies. Adult supervisors are committed to a maximum of 17 hours a week.
Paraprofessional Educator (PPE)- PPEs work primarily in the general education environment as tutors or supplemental help to general education teachers. While there are no formal qualifications for this position, candidates with experience working in educational settings will be prioritized first. PPEs are committed to a maximum of 19 hours a week
Educational Assistant (EA)- EAs at Nimitz Elementary School primarily work as an assistant to Special Education teachers. Roles may vary as some work as classroom assistants, while others may work with students on an individual level. EAs are also expected to perform supervisory roles at recess and lunch. Full Time EAs work from 7:00am to 3:30pm.
Special Qualifications Needed: High school diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (GED), or equivalent AND one of the following No Child Left Behind options:
48 semester credits, baccalaureate level courses, from an accredited institution of higher education recognized by the Hawaii Department of Education. The forty-eight (48) credits may be from various programs or academic subject areas. In addition, of the 48 credits from baccalaureate level courses, 3 must have been for math and 3 for English courses.
An Associate in Arts (AA) or Science (AS) degree or higher from an accredited institution recognized by the Hawaii Department of Education. The credits earned for the degree must include a minimum of 48 credits for courses that are baccalaureate level.
Successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment provided by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
General Education Teacher- General Education teachers work with K-6 students in typical classroom settings and must adhere to the Hawaii Common Core Curriculum Standards. However, some openings may be in regards to special roles such as music, art, and computer science. Responsibilities include lesson planning, instruction, curriculum collaboration, and assessment. Special Qualifications Needed: The Hawaii State Department of Education is committed to hiring highly qualified teachers in every classroom. With the exception of designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) positions, the minimum qualification to apply for a teacher, librarian or counselor position is a Bachelor's Degree. However, the Department's Hiring Priority, and order in which candidates will be contacted, is as follows:
Certified Teacher, Librarian or Counselor with a Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB) License
Certified Teacher, Librarian or Counselor without an HTSB License
Minimum of Bachelor's Degree (No Teacher, Librarian or Counselor Preparation Program Completed)
Special Education Teacher- Special Education teachers work primarily with students on Individualized Education Programs. Teachers in this role may teach for multiple grade levels. Responsibilities include lesson planning, instruction, curriculum collaboration, assessment, and coordinating individualized education program documentation and meetings.
