6th GRADE FITNESS DAY
Radford High School hosted the annual Fitness Day, welcoming all sixth-grade students from the surrounding Radford area complex for an exciting day of physical activity. The students engaged in a variety of events, from collaborative field games where teams used parachutes to pass balls to each other, to energetic relay races and friendly rounds of four square. There was even the lighthearted fun of a water balloon toss! Students also gained valuable skills by practicing CPR on mannequins and experienced a unique way to create a healthy treat by pedaling stationary bikes to power a smoothie blender. Our sixth graders even learned some choreography to participate in an end of the day mass dance! The day successfully highlighted the benefits of staying healthy through physical exercise and fostered a sense of teamwork, leaving the sixth graders with great positive memories.
KIDS HEART CHALLENGE
Nimitz Elementary was buzzing with energy during the American Heart Association Kids Heart Challenge! Students enjoyed lots of jump roping as part of this nationwide program focused on healthy living and helping others. The Kids Heart Challenge teaches elementary school students about taking care of their physical and mental well-being through fun activities. It also raises money for the American Heart Association to support those with special hearts. Our students learned about teamwork, kindness, positive thinking, and the importance of getting good sleep. The donations they collected will go towards research, education, and support for those with heart problems. Nimitz raised $4700! Mahalo to our PE teacher, Mr. Matsumoto, who played a big role in getting everyone ready by incorporating healthy habits into lessons and practicing great cardio skills through jump roping, and a big Mahalo to all who helped raise money for the American Heart Association!
BIKE EDUCATION AT NIMITZ
In the third quarter, our fourth graders had an amazing week learning all about bike safety and having tons of fun with our annual BikeEd program! Thanks to the wonderful folks from BikeEd Hawaii and the Hawaii Bicycling League, students experienced the joy of riding a bike, some for the very first time! For five whole days, the back field of Nimitz was transformed into a bike learning zone! Students learned how to properly put on helmets, check their bikes to make sure they were safe, and how to look around and signal when riding, and even learned the important laws of the road. The amazing instructors were patient and encouraging, helping everyone feel confident on two wheels. The bike ed education week culminated in a neighborhood bike ride. Students got to put their new skills to the test on the roads around our school and in the neighborhood. A big mahalo to BikeEd Hawaii and the Hawaii Bicycling League for making this such a memorable and educational experience. Keep pedaling, Nimitz students!
2nd ANNUAL NIMITZ READ-A-THON
We are thrilled to announce the launch of our 2nd annual Nimitz Read-a-Thon, which will run throughout the entire month of March.
To inspire our students to read more, family and community members can play a vital role by encouraging students to engage in reading during their free time each week. Whether you aim for them to read for 10, 20, or even 30 minutes weekly, your support can greatly contribute to their literacy goals. We encourage you to sign up and motivate your children to immerse themselves in reading!
This initiative also serves as a school fundraiser, with all proceeds directly benefiting the school to support reading programs and community engagement efforts focused on students.
Flyers detailing your child’s specific class were distributed this week. Here is a quick video to help you navigate through the process.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Parent Community Networking Coordinator at erika.rodgers@k12.hi.us.
NIMITZ NIGHT MARKET and the 5th GRADE RECYCLE RANGERS
The Nimitz Night Market is upon us!
The 5th grade Recycle Rangers are using recycled materials and creating them into up-cycled items that we will sell at the event. For example, paper jewelry, plastic flowers, bird feeders, and many more. We are crafting up-cycled items to help save the environment. Too many people use things one time and it goes to the landfill or goes onto the ground, like a plastic bottle of water, then drinks one little sip and puts it in the trash which goes to the landfill.
So come on down to the Nimitz Night Market, and bring your family too. It is on Friday, March 14, 2025 at 2:00 -5:00 pm in the cafeteria at Nimitz.
Hope to see you there! And we promise you will have a good time.

NIMITZ ELEMENTARY STUDENTS EXPLORE PATHS AT CAREER DAY
Nimitz Elementary School held its annual Career Day on January 22, 2025, giving students a glimpse into a wide array of career possibilities. Representatives from various professions shared insights into their daily work, explaining what their jobs entail and offering advice on how students can prepare for similar careers.
This year's Career Day was designed with student input in mind allowing for students to practice voice and choice. Students had the opportunity to express their interests, and their feedback directly shaped the types of careers represented. The diverse lineup included park rangers, hospitality professionals, members of the Honolulu Fire Department and Police Department, Navy personnel, a martial arts studio owner, paramedics, a cartoonist, a professional chef, bankers, and many more.
Students rotated through classrooms, listening to speakers and engaging in Q&A sessions about their chosen professions. The event provided a valuable bridge between classroom learning and the real world of work, allowing students to hear firsthand accounts from professionals in various fields.
A big Mahalo to Mr. Ma and Ms. Rodgers for their hard work and dedication in making Career Day a success!
NIMITZ ELEMENTARY BASKETBALL
Our Nimitz Elementary basketball teams recently wrapped up an exciting season at the annual Radford Complex Basketball Tournament! Each year, elementary schools within the Radford Complex send boys’ and girls’ teams to Radford High School to compete in a series of spirited tournament games.
The journey began back in Quarter 2 with tryouts for both teams. Once the rosters were set, student-athletes dedicated themselves to rigorous practices, refining their basketball skills, building teamwork, and preparing for competition.
When tournament day arrived, our Nimitz boys’ and girls’ teams took to the courts at Radford High School, putting their hard work into action against teams from neighboring elementary schools. While some games ended in victory and others in valuable lessons, every player gained meaningful experience in teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship—skills that extend far beyond the game.
A heartfelt Mahalo to Coach Matsumoto (girls’ team) and Coach Kam (boys’ team) for their dedication to providing this incredible opportunity for our students.
Congratulations to all our Nimitz basketball team members on a fantastic season!
Our first ever Nimitz Turkey Trot Color Fun Run took place Friday, November 22, 2024. This PTO sponsored event brought together students, families, our PTO, many volunteers and Nimitz faculty and staff to participate in a fun filled run.
Runners ran around a track for 20 minutes and had an opportunity to be showered with a cloud of various colors, if they wanted to. With great music playing, our student council cheering on our runners and lots of smiles, runners not only had a chance to take part in physical fitness, but also help raise funds for our PTO and school.
The Turkey Trot Color Fun Run allowed families to donate to the PTO to help Nimitz Elementary fund a Book Vending machine! Students whose families participated in the fundraising also got prizes. The fundraising goal was $20,000.
At the Turkey Trot, our PTO president announced that the goal was met and exceeded! The Turkey Trot raised more than $25,000! This means the school will get a Book Vending machine, and also the students now have a chance to silly string our principal, Mr. Allen in a future assembly!
In addition to the money raised, Nimitz also received donations from all 50 states, which means that all students will receive a coupon for a personal pan pizza from Papa Johns!
It surely was a nice day for a color run, and a great way to welcome the start of the Thanksgiving holiday and winter holiday season. Thank you to students for participating in this run, and to all of our volunteers, faculty and staff and our PTO for planning, setting up, and running this wonderful school event!
Please consider participating in our annual Food Drive! Nimitz Elementary Student Council is pairing up with Hawaii Food Bank to help stock food bank shelves with non perishable canned foods to help those in need not only this holiday season, but throughout the year.
From November 7-15, 2024 (school days only), students can bring in non perishable canned foods to school. Donations can be dropped off in front of the cafeteria between 7:30 AM - 7:45 AM. Thank you for your consideration and donations!
Nimitz Elementary’s annual Fall Festival took place on Friday, October 25, 2024. Our Fall Festival is an event that brings together our school and family community for an afternoon of carnival type game booths, bouncy houses, food, fun and more!
Students and families participated in different game booths created and run by grade level teachers and student volunteers. From an aquarium penny drop game to mini basketball hoop shots to even treasure chest hunts and ring toss games, everyone who participated got a chance to win tickets used to redeem for prizes. Students had a chance to win additional prizes by playing an AVID bingo game, where students needed to correctly answer questions at each game booth and earn marks on a bingo card. Once a bingo card was complete, students could redeem the filled card for a special AVID prize! A very popular game booth was the dunking booth! Students were able to aim for and hit a target to plunge volunteer teachers and staff into a barrel of water!
The annual Fall Festival also featured a silent auction, for parents and guardians to bid on donated services and items. There were lots of different auction items including a sunset cruise on the waters off Diamond Head, bookings to Escape Room Games, different gift baskets filled with Gift Cards, a cooler and bluetooth speaker, and even a chance to swim with sea life in the waters off Waikiki! A big MAHALO to all donors who graciously donated to our event!
Students were also able to get play in bounce houses designed for our lower grades and even a bouncy house maze and slide for our adventurous students. If anyone got hungry, a variety of food trucks were on site. Thank you to Ruby’s 2.0, Main Squeeze Lemonade, Papa Johns, Wrap N Roll, Krazy Dogs Hawaii, Sabor Mexicano, and Aloha Sweet Cotton Candy for joining us and providing a variety of delicious food and beverages!
