Student Traffic Concern at Crosswalk- While this announcement may seem like a joke, I am serious when I say that there is a chicken in a tree across the road. Yes, just past our student cross walk towards the Aupaka Gate, a hen has made a nest in a tree. This has caused a backup of traffic in the area which is now becoming a safety concern for our students. If your child walks home alone, I kindly ask that you address this with your child and ask them to leave the hen alone out of the interest of safe travels.

In honor of the month of November and being thankful for all that we have, the fourth graders created an artistic spiraling mandala focusing on gratitude, with thoughtful words and phrases embedded in interpreting what gratitude meant to them.  We are grateful to have such kind, thoughtful and creative 4th grade students at Nimitz! Upcoming Emergency Drills- Every year, in accordance with the standards of the Hawaiʻi Department of Education, Nimitz Elementary conducts emergency drills to ensure the safety of our campus. While we have already conducted fire drills and an earthquake drill, the two upcoming drills deal with crisis situations. Therefore we thought it important to give you a heads up. While our shelter in place drill will be relatively brief, simulating an alert status for our campus due to a possible threat in the nearby area, our lockdown and evacuation drill will simulate an emergency during unstructured time which will lead to a campus lockdown and an evacuation to Lynch Field. It is highly recommended our students and staff are dressed comfortably for the lockdown and evacuation drill. These drills will occur on the following dates…

Please follow the instructions on the survey carefully and return the survey to your child’s teacher in the envelope it came in. Kona Ice (8/23)- It has been hot recently, and on those walks home from school, you might be thinking about how to cool off. Luckily, at least one Wednesday every month, Kona Ice parks their truck right next to Aupaka Gate. Their first visit will be tomorrow, so if you’d like to make a pre order, please follow the instructions on this link. If not, then please check them out at Aupaka Gate after school tomorrow (8/23).

Vehicle Placards Reminder- Ensuring the safety of our students during dismissal is important. Particularly in our vehicle line, we want to make sure we are sending the correct students to each vehicle. We are kindly asking parents/guardians who pick up their children in the vehicle line to create a vehicle placard through this online form. This placard can be placed on your dashboard so our staff can easily identify which student should be leaving campus in that vehicle. Once you fill out this form, please allow us at least 48 hours to print the placard and place it in your child's backpack. When the placard makes it home to you, simply follow the instructions and place it on your vehicle's dashboard when picking up your child.

HIDOE SEL Survey Opt Out (Gr. 3-6)- It is our goal at Nimitz Elementary School to ensure that every student is safe and supported as they transition back to school. We value the input of our students as they are important partners in the work to improve the overall school experience and support their needs. In order to learn more about student experiences, we will be asking for your Grade 3-6 child’s feedback via an online survey run across all Hawaii Department of Education schools at two points this school year: Fall and Spring. The survey will be administered in school and shouldn’t take more than 20-30 minutes to complete. We are asking that all of our grade 3-6 students participate in the surveys, as their feedback will provide invaluable insights into their experiences and how to improve and adapt our school to their needs. The survey content will ask students to self-reflect on their own social emotional learning skills, like self-management and self-efficacy. If you DO NOT wish to have your grade 3-6 child participate, please complete this form.

8/11/2023- Nimitz ES Lahaina Donation Drive (8/14)

As we come to a close on the first week of school, I send my hopes that you and your children have enjoyed their return to campus. Our teachers and staff have enjoyed seeing their students come back in such excited fashion for another school year. With that said, I write this message to you with a heavy heart knowing that this privilege of a great first week of school could not be enjoyed by our neighbor island community of Lahaina, Maui.

I am sure by now you are aware of the devastation that has befallen Lahaina where families have been displaced, homes and businesses have been destroyed, and lives have been lost. As more footage comes in, we have only learned how much worse the wildfires of recent days have ravaged this historic town.

At the beginning of this school year, I have emphasized to our staff that we are part of a greater community. This community extends not only to the boundaries of Nimitz Elementary School, but across the entire state. As a state of islands, we may seem disconnected, but our strong sense of ʻohana is called upon in times like these. Therefore, I am asking the Nimitz Elementary ʻOhana to help members of our greater community in these trying times.

On Monday 8/14/23, in coordination with HIEMA, we will be collecting donations of toiletries, diapers, formula, toys, clothing, bedding, household goods and non-perishable food. Bottled water donations are discouraged. You may drop off these items throughout the school day, and we will deliver it to a HIEMA designated drop off station at the earliest opportunity.

Your help will be greatly appreciated, not only to the current residents of Lahaina, but from this former resident of Lahaina as well.

Sincerely,

Corey Allen, Principal
