In recognition of these cultural or style shifts, we bring Decade Day for our spirit day this week. Students might want to show off their suits and ties from the 1920s, a poodle skirt from the 50s, or maybe the bright neon colors of the 80s. Just remember to keep it school appropriate.

Celebration and Treat Policy- During the surge of the pandemic last year, NES administration greatly modified its celebration and treat policy in the interest of safety. 1/11/2022- Updates and Reminders

Updates to COVID Protocols- As COVID has come back, not only has the pandemic itself been challenging, but so has managing it with changing policies. While we have done well to keep up with CDC and DOH guidance, further updates were announced this morning, and we have been doing our best to follow up with families that are currently in quarantine. Thank you so much for your understanding, and diligence in following the protocols. Your actions keep our students and staff safe. We will be updating our school level handbooks by the end of the week.

Q2 Report Cards Released 1/10- Yesterday (1/10) was the designated release date for Q2 report cards. Please be on the lookout for your child’s report card as they were sent home manually (some exceptions for teachers in leave situations). If you have any questions regarding the report card, please notify your child’s respective teacher.

Hawaii DOH Navy Water Crisis Survey- A public health team from the Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (CDC/ATSDR) are conducting a survey to learn more about the experience of people who have been affected by the petroleum contamination in the U.S. Navy’s Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam drinking water system.  You may participate in the survey online at https://go.usa.gov/xtg8v, the QR code below or contact the CDC/ATSDR team at 404-567-3256 or ATSDRACE@cdc.gov. The survey will be available online until February 7, 2022.

DOE Connectivity Survey (due 1/13/22)- In efforts to gain more data about the technology capabilities of all schools in the state, the DOE has been soliciting feedback regarding Wifi connectivity at home. While Wifi connectivity was typically not an issue for our community, we understand the Water Crisis may have changed the situations for some of your home life. If you DO NOT have access, or have limited access to Wifi in your current living situation, please fill out this survey. It should be noted that this survey coincidentally coincides with our current situation and HAS NOT been solicited directly in response to a pending campus shut down

1/4/2022- Updates and Reminders
Late yesterday, the Hawaii Department of Education changed it’s COVID-19 policies to be more in line with CDC and DOH guidance. This unfortunately occurred an hour after we sent the most recent updates and reminders. With that said, we have updated our Parent/Student Handbook with the most recent Return to School/Work Criteria. Highlights include…

In addition to these updates we’d like to remind our families of our new school level protocols in regards to keeping track of absences and vaccination status.

1/3/2022- Updates and Reminders

COVID-19 Updates and Reminders- Due to the COVID-19 surge over the Winter Break, our faculty and staff will be vigilant in keeping our campus safe for all of our students and families. It should be noted that new guidance from the CDC and DOH was released over the break, but the Hawaii DOE has not released any updates regarding the adaptation of said guidance. We will be updating our protocols and communicating them in a timely manner if changes occur. In the meantime, please see this letter from Interim Superintendent Hayashi addressing our return.

NEW Absence Reporting Form- In efforts to streamline reports of absences and reasons for absence, NES administration will now be collecting reports of absences using a google form (https://bit.ly/NESAbsenceReport21-22) instead of requesting email or phone correspondence. By using this form, notice of your child's absence from school will instantly be given to NES administrators, office staff, and your child's teacher at the same time. You can find this form on our school website (nimitzelementary.hidoe.us). More information can be found on the form itself.

NES Vaccination Form- At the moment, our current state level resources do not have tools to track the status of COVID-19 vaccinations for our students. The vaccination status of our students makes a significant difference in determination of quarantine periods towards travel and close contact situations. Therefore, we are taking it upon ourselves at the school level to collect this information from our families regarding the COVID-19 vaccination status of our students with this google form. This information will help us streamline our COVID-19 protocols, will be kept secure on our HIDOE servers, and will not be shared with any outside parties.

Meal Service During the Water Crisis- At the end of Q2, in response to the Navy Water Crisis, our cafeteria staff did it’s best to maintain meal service despite not having access to tap water. For most of that time until Winter Break, our cafeteria was limited to serving pizza as an entree for lunch. As our School Food Services Branch has been able to reexamine supply, we are confident that we can provide more variety to our lunch services throughout this crisis in quarter 3. However, the menu selection will not be able to be given out more than a week in advance. You can see the latest menu changes here on our Nimitz Website. We appreciate your patience and understanding throughout all of this.

Main Street Sidewalk Repairs- During the Winter Break, a water main break occurred under the sidewalk at the South West corner of campus. While the main was repaired, as of this update, the sidewalk is still inaccessible near the cross walk that is typically used to come to school. Please use caution in this area during arrival and dismissal times.

Crazy Socks Spirit Day 1/7- This Friday’s spirit day will be Crazy Sock day! With cooler weather, socks will be that much more in fashion. But feel free to bring your craziest pairs to campus. Rainbows, high tops, animals?! We’ll take them all!

12/13/2021- Updates and Reminders

Update on Water Crisis- The Nimitz Elementary Faculty and Staff remain committed to keeping school open despite the current situation. We have been working with our state leadership, and military coordinators to ensure our operations run smoothly. With that said, here are some particular updates in regards to the water crisis...

Mask Policy Reminder- In recent days we have had an influx of students coming to campus without a mask. While we understand policies on base have changed, the DOE still holds a strict policy on mask wearing while on campus. We do have masks available for students, but our resources are finite and are not meant for daily consumption. Please ensure your children are coming to school with a proper mask

Travel Policy Reminder- With the Winter Break approaching, we’d like to give a friendly reminder about our COVID-19 travel policy. If you are traveling out of state, please let your child’s teacher and/or our office staff know as we must follow strict State and DOE protocols which require non-vaccinated students to return to campus with the documentation below. Students who have been vaccinated (both shots) 2 weeks prior to departure to the out-of-state destination, will not be held to the following procedures...

If these documents cannot be provided, then non-vaccinated students must remain in quarantine for 10 days from date of return before returning to campus.

NES PTO Panda Express Fundraiser 12/17- Our PTO would like to remind our families that there is a fundraiser this Friday (12/17) hosted by Panda Express. Please see this flyer for more details.

Winter Program Release- In SY20-21, due to the COVID pandemic, we were not able to host our annual Winter Program. It was unfortunate, as it was another event on our list of traditional events that we could not carry out due to safety restrictions. While those restrictions may still be in place, we took it upon ourselves to find some way to bring the event back. Throughout the second quarter, our students and faculty have been hard at work preparing the release of a virtual version of our Winter Program. Please be on the lookout for this release in the coming days, as we are very excited to share our work with you.

Spirit Day 12/17- For our last Spirit Day of quarter 2, we wanted to do our best to embrace the cold weather that is typically associated with this time of the year. So, for this Friday we will be celebrating Pajama Day! Please come to school with your PJs, to get a head start on the holidays!

12/6/2021- Updates and Reminders

Update on Water Crisis- As the Navy water contamination issue continues, Nimitz Elementary remains committed to keeping school open while doing so in a safe fashion. Our staff has done well to deliver bottled water to classrooms throughout the week, modify food service procedures to use shipped water, and build devices to continue handwashing in class without the use of taps. Additionally we’d like to thank staff and community members that have generously donated water, wipes, and hand sanitizer during this ordeal. We would like to particularly highlight the following groups and offices for their large donations…

Our main priority at the moment is establishing transportation for families who have been temporarily displaced due to the crisis. Thank to those of you who are affected that have already taken our survey to track displaced families. If you have been moved, but have not filled out the survey yet, please do so here

Jingle Bell Fun Run 12/10- This coming Friday, we will be celebrating the holidays with our annual Jingle Bell Fun Run. Students will be able to demonstrate healthy activity and jingle their bells by running on our D building backfield in holiday fashion. Due to COVID restrictions and logistical limitations, this will be a student-only event. However, we will do well to share our celebrations on our website.

Spirit Day 12/10- In alignment with our Jingle Bell Fun Run, we encourage all of our students to wear holiday colors for this week’s spirit day!

Vaccination Event Reminder 12/11- This Saturday (12/11), we will be hosting our 2nd vaccination event at the Nimitz Elementary School Cafeteria between 9am and 1pm. As before, the Aupaka Gate will not be open for our vaccination site days. We welcome you to travel by car to our event, and park on Main Street. If you or your child would like to participate in this vaccination event, please see the following electronic forms and documents that need to be completed…

11/29/2021- Updates and Reminders

NES Canned Food Drive Success- In the spirit of the recent Thanksgiving holiday we wanted to give a big “Thank You” to all the families that participated in our Canned Food Drive this year! We were able to collect 2,000 canned goods for the Hawaii Food Bank! Your donations are greatly appreciated and have been delivered. Thank you again for your generosity.

Off Campus Evacuation Drill 12/1-  We will be conducting our Off Campus evacuation drill to Lynch Field on Wednesday, 12/1. We will begin the drill at 8:15am to avoid as much daytime heat as possible. Although we would not have this luxury in a real emergency situation, we ask that students come to school with covered shoes to alleviate the travel.

Winter Program Update- In efforts to carry out our Winter activities safely this year, classes have already been working to create a virtual version of the NES Winter Program. Since classrooms must record their songs separately throughout quarter 2, students not present on the day of recording may not be included in the final release of the program. Please reach out to your child’s teacher for more information.

Spirit Day 12/3- This week’s Spirit Day will be focused on showing our school’s commitment to college and career readiness. To celebrate Future Friday, students should come to school with their favorite college apparel or dress in a profession they aspire to be.
