Aloha Festival Reminders
Aupaka Gate- The Aupaka Gate will have a modified opening time from 7:15am to 10:30am. If you are coming from JBPHH, it is highly recommended you walk to the festival to minimize parking issues on Main Street.
Backfield Entrance- Unlike last year, parents will need to enter the audience area through our backfield gate near Main Street. The stage is turned around this year to give our performers better access to classrooms and bathrooms. Parents will NOT be permitted to enter the audience area through the campus. Should you drop off your children directly at the classroom, you will be asked to go back around the campus to enter the audience area at the backfield entrance.
Photo Area- There will be a designated area for parents of the performing students to get closer to the performance area during their child’s performance. However, we will ask these parents to please kneel while taking photos and video in order to keep viewing available to the rest of the audience.
Rainy Day Plans- The forecast looks a little wet. We do plan to carry on with our festival if the forecast looks like passing showers. However, should the rain be more torrential or ongoing, we plan to carry out the performances in our cafeteria with a plan to allow performing students' parents in per grade level performance.
Signing Out of Students- We understand many parents will want to sign out their children early from school tomorrow. You must sign your child out directly from the classroom after the performance. The front gate of campus will be opened at the conclusion of the festival, where parents may re-enter campus after exiting at the backfield.
Short Day Swaps- Due to the Aloha Festival, and our last day of school, we will be swapping our last two short day Wednesdays to Fridays. So to be perfectly clear…
Friday 5/23- Dismissal at 1:10pm
Wednesday 5/28- Dismissal at 2pm
Friday 5/30- Dismissal at 1:10pm
Late Bus at Dismissal Until End of SY- We were notified today that our dismissal bus has been subject to some coordination changes, and will be arriving at the Nimitz campus for dismissal at roughly 2:30pm from now until the end of the year. For those of you with children that take the bus home, please plan for a later arrival time.
Yearbook Distribution - Exciting news! Our Nimitz Yearbooks have finally arrived! All pre-ordered yearbooks will be sent home with students today, Thursday May 22, 2025. If you haven't secured your copy yet, a limited number are still available. Please visit the office for further details.

HIDOH Letter on Measles Vaccination- With the increasing risk of measles reaching Hawaiʻi, The Hawaiʻi Department of Health is strongly encouraging families to consider getting their child(ren) vaccinated against measles. Please see this letter for more information about this issue, and how to get your child vaccinated. You may also reach out to our complex area nurse Ms. Catherine Underwood for more information about school-required vaccinations.
Appropriate Procedures for Student Medication- In response to a situation in recent days, we'd like to remind our families that it is important to not send children to school with medications on their person. This creates a dangerous situation for students and adults. Even if medications have been prescribed to students, all medications must be administered through the health aide office to ensure they are administered appropriately and safely. If you need to establish such a procedure, please reach out to our health aide (Marlene.Yong@k12.hi.us) to work through the appropriate protocols.
Book Vending Machine- In case you haven’t noticed yet, our PTO is amazing! They’ve recently installed our newest Book Vending machine from the funds we all raised from our Turkey Color Fun Run! With that said, many of our students have noticed this machine in our cafeteria and have been attempting to put coins in it to retrieve books. Unfortunately the machine uses a special token, and we will be distributing these tokens as awards in the future. For now, if your children are asking you for money for the book vending machine, please let them know that their quarters and dimes will not work. Sorry!
Absence Form Reminder- Should your child not be coming to school on instructional days, please make sure you inform us using our Absence Report Form. This can be found on our website, or just save the bit.ly for quick access in the future (bit.ly/NESAbsenceReport).

Lock Tampering at Aupaka Gate- In recent days, JBPHH security forces have been facing difficulties opening the Aupaka Gate on time due to lock tampering. This tampering has now occurred on multiple occasions, and has been confirmed to be done by Nimitz Elementary students. As a school staff, the Aupaka Gate is a difficult area for us to enforce, especially during non-school hours and for the fact that it is not school property. To the families who utilize the Aupaka Gate for Nimitz Elementary access, we would appreciate you addressing this issue with your children to prevent further tampering. We would like JBPHH security forces to continue their courtesy of opening Aupaka Gate to us and not face unnecessary difficulties.

Congratulations to our October winner Mrs. Ashley Bonocan! "Mrs. Bonocan is a gem!!! She is so organized, and always available to assist and answer questions. Not to mention, my child adores her and her teaching style. She makes learning fun and interesting. It is such an amazing feeling as a parent to know your child is in good (learning) hands. Huge thanks to Mrs. Bonocan for all that she does for our little learners."
Turkey Trot COLOR Fun Run 11/22- Next Friday will be our Turkey Trot Color Fun Run! So next Friday, you are welcome to come to our campus to join your children on the run in our backfield.
Parent Participation
Aupaka Gate- We have confirmed that Aupaka gate will be open from 11:00am to 3:15pm on Trot Day!
Parent Sign In- If you would like to join your child during the run, you must check in at the main gate before entering campus (open at 11:30am). This is open to family members only. Visiting family members will need to wear a designated bracelet after signing in. Parents will be asked to wait for their children at the playcourt after arriving on campus.
Early Student Sign Out- If you would like sign your child out early at the conclusion of their run, please wait until your child’s class has returned to the room. There, your child’s teacher will provide you the appropriate method of documentation to sign out your child.

At the station, runners will be given sprays of colored corn starch which will intentionally stain clothing. IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU WEAR AN EXPENDABLE SHIRT IF YOU RUN THROUGH THE STATION. If you DO NOT want to participate in the color portion of the run, routes around the station will be provided.
Reminder on Tardy Policy- In recent days we’ve had some moments of confusion regarding our tardy policy. It is an expectation that students be at the classroom door at 7:45am to enter class in a timely manner. At 7:50am, when the tardy bell rings, the main gate will close promptly and late students will be directed to get a tardy pass before going to class. With this in mind, Nimitz parents/guardians SHOULD NOT bypass the tardy line in the office, engage in confrontations with our supervisory staff, or carry their children over the fence of the school.

We're excited to announce our annual Student Council Canned Food Drive, happening from now until Friday, November 15th. Please drop off your canned goods donations between 7:30 AM and 7:45 AM in front of the cafeteria. AVID Wall Update- Grade 4’s AVID-inspired "Turkeys in Disguise" display is ready to serve! Each 4th-grade student has “dressed” their turkey in creative camouflage, including students, soldiers, ballerinas, surfers, grass, and many more. Alongside these imaginative costumes, students have cooked up some pretty persuasive and narrative essays detailing why you should pass on turkey this Thanksgiving—or why they're simply too well-disguised to end up on your table. We invite you to feast your eyes on the creativity and storytelling behind each unique turkey!
Grade 4 RWL Learning Project- Our Nimitz Elementary 4th Graders are working to create a non-profit organization that works to help get necessary items like school supplies, clothing, etc. to those in need. They have just created a website to help them organize their effort and get the message out. You can see their work here.

Parent Teacher Conference Feedback for SY25-26- In efforts to plan for SY25-26, special exceptions for the Nimitz ES SY25-26 calendar must be submitted for approval in January 2025. One exception Nimitz Elementary administration is exploring is a modification to the Parent Teacher Conference schedule from a 1.5 week long after school schedule, to a 2 waiver day schedule. This school year, we have tried this 2 Waiver Day schedule for the first time. 2 consecutive days were excluded from instruction on Sept 12-13 for parent teacher conferences. This allowed our teachers to focus strictly on parent teacher conferences instead of moving back and forth between instruction and conferences for a week and a half. This also opened availability to our families to attend conferences throughout the day, instead of a series of smaller windows after school time, which conflicts with dismissal procedures as well. So far, anecdotal feedback from stakeholders has been mostly positive, but we would like to give every one of our parents and opportunity to chime in. Please fill out this form to give your preferences and/or feedback on the possible exception for SY25-26.

Halloween Festivities- As the Halloween holiday approaches, we’d like to address the typical questions about the holiday. Please see them below…
Costumes?- YES, students may wear costumes to school for Halloween. However, we ask our parents to please make sure they are elementary school appropriate. If a costume is found to be disruptive to learning (i.e: Disturbing gore, vision impediments), we will need to make modifications.
Candy?- Families, please monitor the amount of candy your children bring to school. Not only may excessive candy consumption disrupt learning, but it encourages food sharing which can bring a danger to some students.
Treat Bags?- If you would like to distribute items for Halloween festivities, please adhere to our treat distribution policy on page 19 of our Parent/Student Handbook.
Panorama Student Perception Survey- At Nimitz Elementary School we value the input of our students as they are important partners in the work to improve the overall school experience and support their needs. In order to learn more about student experiences, we will be asking for your child’s feedback via an online survey run across all Hawaii Department of Education schools. The Panorama Student Perception Survey will be administered in school and shouldn’t take more than 20-30 minutes to complete. We are asking that all of our upper grade students (3-6) participate in the surveys, as their feedback will provide invaluable insights into their experiences and how to improve and adapt our school to their needs. The survey content will focus on School Safety including a School Quality Survey for Safety, Valuing of School, Classroom Engagement, Teacher-Student Relationships and Pedagogical Effectiveness. If you DO NOT wish to have your child participate, please fill out this google form by 11/22/24.

NES AVID Page Updates- As an AVID school, we do our best to engage our students in high-level thinking (creation, inquiry, critical thinking) assignments and projects. We typically highlight our AVID work in the cafeteria, but would also like to highlight it online as grade levels continue to update our cafeteria AVID Wall. This month, Each third grader created a personal monster that parallels their descriptive writing lessons. Students brought their picture to life with creepy and creative adjectives to share with the whole school. Please take some time to see this wonderful work on our AVID Wall on our NES AVID Page.
Bicycle Clutter Strikes Again- Another report was received recently regarding bicycle clutter near the bike racks at Aupaka Gate. Bicycles are again being parked in the walkways towards the Aupaka Gate and not on the racks. Please see this picture for reference. Should your child be traveling to school by bicycle and then through Aupaka Gate, we would appreciate it if you could address this issue with them and at least remind them how locking your bike to the racks are designed to avoid this issue.

Students who consistently attend school are more likely to achieve academic excellence, develop strong social skills, and cultivate a lifelong love of learning. As we approach the 1st month mark of our school year, we will be reaching out to families with students who have an attendance rate below 90% to inform them of the concern. Parent Teacher Conferences in September- This school year, Nimitz Elementary will be conducting in-person parent teacher conferences on two back-to-back Waiver Days on September 12th and 13th. In preparation for this, teachers may be reaching out to you shortly to solicit preferences on dates and times. It should be noted that we may not be able to satisfy every preference, but will prioritize the preferences of families with 2 or more students at Nimitz Elementary. Families with 2 or more students will be sent a separate email to solicit said preferences.
Bus Transportation Update and Refund Request- To all of our families that are still riding it out with our bus transportation, I am still sending your concerns to our transportation branch who is working with the bus company. As of this point in time, it appears that our general education bus is about 30-40 minutes behind their usual pick up and drop off times for both arrival and dismissal. Our special education bus has also been consistently behind schedule with some assignments. Given these difficulties, our transportation branch recognizes that refunds are appropriate and are fielding such requests here bit.ly/HIDOEBusRefundReq24-25. If you have further questions about refunds or the issue at hand, you may also contact their office at 808-622-0537.
Bike Clutter Near Aupaka Gate- Reports were received recently regarding bicycle clutter near the bike racks at Aupaka Gate. While JBPHH has provided many bike racks for our students traveling by bike from the Earhart Village area, it appears that many students are not racking their bikes, leaving them standing out in the open or laying out in walkways (see picture example). Should your child be traveling to school by bicycle and then through Aupaka Gate, we would appreciate it if you could address this issue with them and at least remind them how locking your bike to the racks are designed to avoid this issue.

We are kindly asking parents/guardians who pick up their children in the vehicle line to create a vehicle placard through this online form. This placard can be placed on your dashboard so our staff can easily identify which student should be leaving campus in that vehicle. Addressing Bus Transportation Concerns- In light of the HIDOE press release on Friday (8/1), regarding loss of transportation at Aliamanu Middle School and Radford High School, we have received numerous inquiries regarding bus service at Nimitz. At this point in time, Nimitz Elementary will continue to have bus service and is not affected by the recent update. While we have no indication this will change anytime soon, we will commit to communicating any changes with you directly as soon as we are aware.
Bus Transportation Information- If you are interested in utilizing bus services you may apply online at https://hi.etrition.com/busapplication. You will be notified of approval or disapproval of your bus application, once your application is approved by the school office. This process can take up to four (4) weeks.

This program is led by the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) and coordinated through Mr. Keola Taniguchi. If you are interested in this program, please contact ktaniguchi@asymcahi.org.
