8/27/2021- Letter from the Interim Superintendent Hayashi

Letter from Interim Superintendent Hayashi- Please read this letter from our Interim Superintendent regarding clarifications on campus safety measures in response to COVID-19.

8/18/2021- Updates and Reminders

Addressing Gate Confusion 8/18- We apologize for the confusion that happened Wednesday (8/18) regarding the late Aupaka Gate opening during dismissal. We typically have procedures to follow to ensure students do not walk out to the gate when it is closed, but failed to act on those procedures in a timely manner. We will do better in the future.

Treats for Celebrations- In efforts to keep our COVID-19 safety protocols effective, we ask that you please DO NOT have your children bring treats or gifts to school to share in class. We understand that this was not reflected explicitly in our Parent/Student Handbook, but have made the appropriate adjustment as of today.

Forms Reminder- If you have not done so yet, please take time to turn in your child’s NES Technology User Agreement, the Technology Responsible Use Form, and/or the Student Publication/Audio/Video Release Form. If you have already turned them in, thank you so much! If you are not sure if you have turned them in or not, please reach out to your respective teacher.

Statehood Day 8/20- This is a friendly reminder that we will not have school on Friday 8/20 due to Hawaii’s Statehood Day. We here at Nimitz Elementary wish you a happy and healthy 3-day weekend.

8/6/2021- Student Travel Policy Clarification

Travel Policy Clarification- It should be noted that travel during the school year is highly unrecommended as it takes away valuable in-person instructional time in the classroom. Furthermore, due to the pandemic, student travel equates to the following of strict policies regarding testing and quarantine. Guidance from the State Government and newly released guidance from the Hawaii DOE requires the following in order to return to campus from trans-pacific travel…

  • Students who travel out of state must adhere to the following guidelines:

    • Be fully vaccinated prior to the start of out-of-state travel and provide proof of vaccination to the school; or

    • Receive a negative pre-travel COVID-19 test within 72 hours of travel, a post negative travel COVID-19 test, and provide documentation of both negative travel tests with returning flight boarding pass to the school prior to return to campus; or

    • Complete a mandatory 10-day quarantine after the return flight prior to return to campus

This change has been reflected in our Parent-Student Handbook. We understand that this process is stringent, therefore highly recommend that students do not travel throughout the school year.

8/3/2021- Procedure Clarifications After First Day of School

Morning Arrival- Please make sure that you go directly to your child’s classroom cone to wait for class pickup. All cones are downstairs, to allow for maximum distancing. Students and parents, SHOULD NOT go upstairs as supervision will not be available.

Dismissal Procedures- Parents coming to campus to pick up their child on foot, must go through the front cattle gate on the Southwest end of campus. At the end of the day, the main entrance and driveway is reserved for after-school care students, bus riding students, and students being picked up by car in the driveway.

Sibling Dismissals- It is important that your sibling children know where to meet each other for dismissal. If any younger siblings are in grades K-2, then it is suggested that the older sibling pick them up at their class cone. If siblings are in grades 3-6, or leave class at 1:55pm (1:05pm) for after school care, bus pickup, or car pick up, then families must plan where siblings will meet on campus before going to their destination. Please use the maps provided in the Parent-Student Handbook (pg 17) to guide your planning, and relay these plans to your child’s teacher if necessary.

Short Day Reminder- Tomorrow (8/4) will be a short day, with class officially getting out at 1:10pm (1:00pm for PreK, and 1:05pm for after school care, bus, car pickup). The Aupaka Gate will be open at 1:00pm and close promptly at 2:00pm.

School T-Shirts for Sale- Our school’s PTO will be selling school t-shirts near the front cattle gate from 1:00pm until 2:30pm tomorrow (8/4). Please support the Nimitz PTO, and show your Nimitz Eagle Pride!

8/2/2021- Parent Student Handbook, Meal Survey, Kindergarten Updates

Letter from Interim Superintendent Hayashi- Please read this letter from our new Superintendent Keith Hayashi to kick us off into the new school year.

Parent-Student Handbook SY21-22- Please see our updated Parent/Student Handbook for SY21-22. The handbook incorporates information from a typical school year AND updated guidance regarding our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It must be known that the COVID-19 guidance may change as the school year progress, and we will communicate those changes as they come. Some of the notable COVID-19 related highlights of this book are…

  • The Daily Wellness check is extremely important, and the first mitigating factor to COVID-19.

  • Short days are no longer on Fridays, but back to Wednesdays.

  • When arriving on campus parents and students must stand in line at their classroom cone

  • Mask wearing will now be optional during recess periods, but must be worn at any other time other than eating and drinking

  • Staggered dismissal times have been pushed up in efforts to lessen the impact on instructional time.

  • While the symptom and quarantine policy remains the same, the travel policy has changed to reflect needs for COVID-19 testing AFTER a return flight.

NES Meal Survey for SY21-22- As we prepare for our new school year, it has been announced that the HIDOE will be providing one school breakfast and one school lunch for every child, every instructional day, free of charge. With this announcement, we anticipate a greater demand for meals, and would like to be prepared for said demand. If your family plans to utilize our breakfast and/or lunch services, it would be helpful to our staff if you shared those intentions through this survey so we may accurately anticipate the numbers of meals to prepare.

Kindergarten Testing and Orientation Updates and Reminders- Kindergarten testing is from August 3-6! If you are a Kinder parent, your child was assigned to a testing day when they registered for school. Please drop off your child at 8:00am and return for pick-up at 12:00pm. Drop off and pick up are at Room 102 (west side of C Building).

Please bring a water bottle to testing day. A snack will be provided, but your child may bring their own if desired. We will be eating lunch at 10:30am. If you do not want your child to eat a free school lunch, please make sure to bring home lunch.

Please note the following changes to Parent Orientation on Monday, August 9, from 8:30-11:00am:

  • Your child’s teacher and classroom number will be posted in the front driveway of the school. We will not have a large group session in the Cafeteria as originally planned. Instead, please report directly to your child’s classroom for Parent Orientation.

  • We ask that only one parent/guardian attends Parent Orientation in order to minimize traffic and congestion. Additionally, students and siblings should not attend Parent Orientation as important information will be shared during this time.

  • Please bring your child’s labeled school supplies to Parent Orientation.

  • If you are unable to attend, please call the Office at (808) 307-4400.

  • Our Kindergarten Meet and Greet normally is an opportunity for teachers, students, and families to mingle with each other but has unfortunately been cancelled out of an abundance of caution regarding the following of COVID-19 mitigation measures.

7/29/2021- Class Lists, Meet and Greet, and Meal Updates and Reminders

All participants will be expected to wear a mask while on campus. We will ask that students come with one parent only in order to minimize traffic and congestion. Family units will be accepted into classrooms, one family unit at a time. Class cones will be placed outside of the designated waiting areas for each classroom. If you are walking to campus through the Aupaka Gate, the gate will be open from 7:40am to 8:50am.

Meal Program Update- In response to many questions about this school year’s meal program, we are happy to confirm that school one school breakfasts and one school lunch will be provided daily, free of charge. However, if you are eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch it is still highly recommended that you fill out the application for Free or Reduced Lunch as it is connected to other benefits regarding transportation and P-EBT.

7/27/2021- Class List Release Delay

4/12/2021- IMPORTANT: Announcement of Full In-Person Transition

Prior to Spring Break, a significant drop in positive COVID cases throughout the island of Oahu prompted the Department of Education State leadership to begin planning for a transition to full in-person learning. Due to this push, NES administration and staff began creating plans to return to 100% face-to-face learning. It should be noted that these plans coincided with many factors such as Board of Education approval, ordering of additional personal protective equipment (PPE), and clarifying new health and safety guidelines for full in-person learning.

Beginning Monday, April 26th, NES will begin our transition into a full in-person 4-day a week school schedule (Monday-Thursday). Fridays will remain a distance learning day for all students. The transition will commence as follows:

  • Monday, April 26th: Grades K-2 will move to full in-person learning (Monday - Thursday)

  • Monday, May 3rd: Grade 3-6 will move to full in-person learning (Monday - Thursday)

The most important aspect of this transition is to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff. Under the new guidance for health and safety, classrooms will now be operating under a “6 feet when possible” distancing protocol, student desks will have desk barriers since they will be placed closer than 6 feet apart, and the cafeteria dining area will also operate with barriers since students will now face each other. Please refer to the NES COVID Parent/Student Handbook (changes highlighted in green) for further details regarding these changes.

To assist with after-school care, we have reached out to Kama’aina Kids about our plans to move to full in-person. If you are interested in taking advantage of Kama’aina Kids after-school care, please follow the instructions on this flier. Please note the program is dependent on sufficient demand and may not be available if a low amount of students sign up.

Lastly, we understand this transition may prompt reconsiderations for some of our families. Per BOE policy, students will still be allowed to utilize the distance learning only (DLO) option. If you would like to move your child from an in-person model to DLO, please complete this survey by Thursday, April 15th, so our teachers may prepare for the transition.

We appreciate your patience as we have been preparing for this change. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns at marcy.kagami@k12.hi.us, corey.allen@k12.hi.us, or erik.kubota@k12.hi.us.

The safety and welfare of our students and staff are the highest priority at Nimitz Elementary School. Despite the onset of the pandemic, we are still upholding our practice of safety drills throughout the year to help our students know what to do in an emergency. The goals of these drills are to improve our ability to protect students, save lives, and reduce injuries. These practice drills allow us to evaluate our emergency operation plans and improve our response skills.

On April 1, 2021 at 8:15 a.m., we will be conducting our evacuation drill. This exercise involves all students and staff evacuating the campus and gathering at Lynch Field. Attendance will be taken and we will return to the school. We should be complete within 45 minutes. During the drill, our office will be closed as the staff participates with the rest of the school.

In the event of a real emergency evacuation, students could be released from the evacuation site. In order to protect your child, students would only be released to parents or other adults listed on the emergency information card. Please be sure that this information is current and accurate. It is a good idea to have several trusted adults listed with the school.

3/4/2021- Important Update on Quarter 4, Aupaka Gate, Reminders

PLEASE READ: Important Update on Quarter 4 - In recent weeks, we feel fortunate to see a significant drop in positive COVID cases throughout the island of Oahu. This drop has prompted our State leadership to begin planning for a transition to full in-person learning. NES Is currently awaiting further details and guidance before solidifying and sharing any plans and dates to return to 100% face-to-face learning. Please continue to monitor the NES website for further updates.

While planning for this transition to 100% face-to-face is still ongoing, we will be starting Quarter 4 (March 22nd) in our current Blended Schedule. If your child is currently distance learning only (DLO) and you would like to switch them to Blended Schedule for the start of Quarter 4, please fill out this survey. If you want to change your child from the Blended Schedule to DLO, please use this same survey to state your intentions as well. If you have multiple children, you will need to fill out this survey for each of them. Please finish this survey by next Wednesday (3/10).

We understand that new information may come within the following weeks, so we will understand if your decision changes. Please inform your teacher or administration directly if you do so.

1/4/2021- Return to Learn, Parent Handbook Updates, Furloughs Postponed

Return to Learn - Happy New Year! We hope you all have had a restful Winter Break. With that said, we are happy to welcome you all back to campus in our full blended schedule. Ohana Yellow will return this Tuesday (1/5/2021) and Ohana Blue will return this Wednesday (1/6/2021). Please see other important reminders and updates regarding the upcoming semester…

Updates to the Parent Handbook - Please see the latest updates regarding on-campus policies and quarantine period changes in our January 4, 2021 version of our parent handbook (bit.ly/NESCOVIDParentHandbook1-4-2021). Changes include:

  • Mask Policies: All staff and students should be following CDC guidelines regarding masks. Please note the guidance on valved masks and gaiters.

  • Quarantine Periods: Due to changes in CDC guidance, quarantine periods for travel and symptoms are 10 days.

  • Tardy Policy: Due to changes in morning drop off and visitation policies, the tardy bell will be moved to 7:55am. However, students coming to campus later than 7:55am will not be allowed to travel to class with their parents.

Furlough Days Postponed - In previous updates, we informed our families that some instructional days in Semester 2 would be lost to furloughs that were announced by Governor Ige. We are happy to inform you that these furlough days have now been postponed to July 2021, which means they will not affect the remainder of this school year.

Grab N Go Meal Order Form (1/5 - 1/22) - If you’d like to pick up a meal from our Grab-and-Go site on distance learning days, please fill out this online form for the weeks of 1/5, 1/11, and 1/19. As a reminder, Grab-and-Go Breakfast is served between 7:50am - 8:20am and Grab-and-Go Lunch is now served from 10:00am to 10:30am.

Packet Pickup Updates - NES will continue to host weekly packet pickups for the foreseeable future to accommodate students on distance learning days. Given our return from Winter Break, some grade levels have elected to host a packet pickup tomorrow (1/5) between 12pm-1pm. Our normal Friday pickups will continue from Friday, January 8th; however, moving forward we will be adjusting the pickup times to 12pm-1pm.

Federal Survey Cards - If your family did not participate in the online federal survey back in November, please complete and return the hardcopy federal survey card as soon as possible. Please note that you’ll need to submit 1 hardcopy survey per child. Completed survey cards allow HIDOE to qualify for federal funds that can be used to hire teachers, purchase textbooks and computers, pay for utilities and more. Each school is eligible to receive additional funds based on the number of surveys completed and returned, so we ask parents to support their local school in maximizing access to these funds.

12/17/2020- Eagles of the Month, Furlough Calendar Changes, Packet Pickups

Congratulations to our November AND December Eagles of the Month- Normally, we would just be sharing our November Eagles of the Month before coming around to Winter Break. However, Ms. Moats and our teachers thought to work a little faster before Winter Break to ensure our December Eagles knew their accomplishments as well. So please take some time to see our November Eagles AND December Eagles of the Month! Congratulations!

Furlough Calendar Changes- As you may already know, the Hawaii State Government has mandated furlough days for the Hawaii DOE in response to major revenue shortfalls. These furlough days will affect our instructional calendar as no instruction will happen on these days, and in effect take away originally planned distance learning days. We may continue to make more adjustments to our calendar throughout next quarter in response to these recent changes. The furlough days are as follows...

  • January 4, 2021 (Monday)

  • February 12, 2021 (Friday)

  • March 1, 2021 (Monday)

  • March 22, 2021 (Monday)

  • April 23, 2021 (Friday)

  • June 1, 2021 (Tuesday)

Packet Pickup Schedule- Tomorrow (12/18), we will be having our final packet pickup for Quarter 2 in the Nimitz Driveway from 11am-1pm. Given that a majority of our students are now on blended schedule, and furlough days will be taking away many of our distance learning days, a majority of packet pickups will be conducted during in-person instructional hours. On top of that, we will only have so many staff available for limited amounts of time, which means they will be cut down to 1 hour windows. Our next packet pickups are as follows...

  • December 18th: 11pm-1pm (Friday)

  • January 5th: 12pm-1pm (Tuesday)

  • January 8th: 12pm-1pm (Friday)

12/10/2020- Qtr 3 Return, Blended Learning Reminders, Kama'aina Kids

Packet Pickup 12/11 - Our next packet pickup will be tomorrow (12/11) in the Nimitz Driveway between 11am and 1pm. Please contact your child’s respective teacher for information on items to be dropped off or picked up.

Quarter 3 Return - With the holiday season upon us, we will continue to closely monitor the current case counts and percent positivity rates as reported by the state’s Department of Health on their School Guidance webpage. Also, the State of Hawaii has instituted a mandatory 14-day quarantine for travelers returning to Hawaii, unless they are to test negative on a pre-travel test from a trusted provider prior to departure. This applies to the families of Nimitz Elementary school.

As noted before, not all grade levels plan to participate in our weekly packet pickups, so please make sure you are in communication with your child’s respective teachers. We understand that this change may throw off previously determined plans. Materials will still be available throughout the week in the Nimitz Elementary office.

Yearbook Photo Request- Despite our precarious situation, our PCNC Norma Sosa, is still working to create our yearbook for SY 20-21. Since the school year is not in its traditional form at the moment, we are asking for a little bit of your help. She is asking that parents email her their child(ren) 1st day of school pictures. Email pictures to nsosa@nimitzeagle.k12.hi.us. As a reminder, if you have not filled out the form for Student Publication/Audio/Video Release Form, she will not be able to use the pictures. 8/24/2020- Nimitz Elementary Discontinuing use of Acellus

The challenge of providing a sound education for our students during a global pandemic has been the greatest challenge of our school’s history. Nimitz Elementary continues to be committed to providing this sound education, but doing so with health and safety in mind. In our efforts to provide flexibility and options for families and students, the need to provide a distance learning only (DLO) option for our students became necessary.

Our school, like many others in the DOE, chose to implement a program called Acellus. This program was one of two recommendations provided to schools from the DOE state offices. Since implementing the program, several concerns have been expressed regarding the appropriateness and rigor of the curriculum provided in Acellus.

Due to these increasing concerns, Nimitz Elementary has chosen to stop the use of the Acellus for all students immediately. Distance Learning Only students will receive communication within the next fews days with further instruction on how to transition into our school’s existing blended model. However, it should be noted that all of our students are currently on a full distance learning schedule for the foreseeable future. In the meantime, we will be exploring other options to best support students who would like to continue as DLO if/when we return to a face-to-face blended model.

We understand this is yet another transition, amongst the many you have been through as we navigate this situation. Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated, and we are still as committed as ever to service the students of our Nimitz Ohana.

If you have any questions about this decision, or other matters, please email us at marcy.kagami@k12.hi.us, corey.allen@k12.hi.us, or erik.kubota@k12.hi.us. Or, you may call us at 808-307-4400.

Weekly Packet Pickups Begin on Monday (August 24) from 12pm to 2pm - We will be hosting a packet pickup for grade levels that are providing paper pencil worksheets or make-it-take-it kits for students. As always, this will be a drive-thru event. It is also available for those of who have not yet returned information forms for your respective teacher. However, please note that NOT ALL teachers and grade levels will be participating in the pickup distribution, so be sure to be in communication with your respective teacher for this event.

Child Care Opportunities- We understand that this “new normal” has put a tremendous strain on child care for all of our families. With that said, we are happy to announce that the YMCA will be providing child care for the duration of our distance learning time, and on JBPHH beginning August 31, 2020. Please click on the provided links for details.

8/17/2020- Drive Thru Drop Off 8/18 Reminder

This is a friendly reminder that we will be conducting a drive thru form drop off tomorrow (8/18) between 12pm and 2pm. Our form drop off was created to replace our original plans of collecting forms during our face-to-face week, which was unfortunately cancelled. Teachers and EAs will be in the Nimitz Elementary driveway to take any forms that you are to turn into teachers.

Some of you may be coming to pick up items, such as packets that were released on Friday, August 14, 2020 or other items based on communication with your teacher. Please let the attendant know what you are picking up, so they can assist in bringing out the items to you.

At Home Device Application Form- During this time, we will continue our device pickup time. Please remember that you need to fill out a device application form in order to guarantee a device will be ready for pickup. This form will be available until Thursday, August 20, 2020.

8/14/2020- Face-to-Face Week MOVED TO ONLINE

We would like to begin this message by saying thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate these troubling times dating back to the last quarter of last school year. While we had hoped our situation would have lightened by the beginning of this school year, it has obviously not.

In recent weeks, we have done our best to prepare our campus, enhance our curriculum, and adjust our instruction appropriately for a blended schedule on campus. Health and safety of our staff and students are paramount. In recent days, the situation had changed, and we were informed that our plans would have to change yet again.

As of last week, Friday, August 7, 2020, we have been doing our best to adhere to the plans directed by Superintendent Kishimoto. Not only were we prepared to adjust our blended schedule plans to an all distance learning schedule, but we set up a face-to-face schedule to allow for a normalized introduction between our teachers and students. Despite the risks we were facing, we felt that our staggered schedule, our socially distanced campus, and our trained faculty and staff were prepared to create the safest environment possible for our students. However, as we have come to the end of our week and face an ever rising count of COVID cases in our community, we believe that the risk of carrying out a large scale face-to-face operation next week is too high.

For the well-being of our school community, we will be cancelling our face-to-face week originally scheduled for August 17 through August 20; rather, the teachers will be meeting with your child online on their designated meeting day according to their Ohana Blue/Ohana Yellow schedule. Please be on the lookout for correspondence from your child’s respective teacher.

We apologize for the inconvenience this will be creating, as we know many of our Nimitz ohana had made plans to make this face-to-face week work for their children to have a proper introduction to a new school year. Please understand that we have not made this decision lightly, and we care about our students' education. We will continue to offer our face-to-face services to our Pre-K students.

Thank you again for your patience and understanding as we continue to work for our students. All of our teachers and staff have worked exhaustively to prepare for this new normal. We will work toward a sound education for your child(ren), and we anxiously await for the day we can see our students in person again. In the meantime, we will see you online. Stay safe and healthy.

Pickups and Dropoffs for Aug 17-20.

In reference to our changes next week, we understand that many of you would have turned in important forms and paperwork through the face-to-face week. Additionally, we understand that some of you may not have been able to come by this Friday (8/14) to pick up your child’s packets and materials. The materials passed out on Friday (8/14) are available in the front office starting on Monday (8/17).

We will also be hosting a variety of pickup and drop offs throughout the week of August 17, 2020:

  • Monday 8/17- DLO Students Only Packet Form Return: 12pm-2pm

  • Tuesday 8/18 - Blended Schedule Packet Pickup and Form Return: 12pm-2pm

As we move into the full distance learning schedule from Monday-Friday, starting August 24, we will be hosting materials pickups on Mondays from 12pm-2pm.

Depending on varying grade level and classroom needs, these materials pickups may or may not be utilized by your child’s teacher. Please stay in touch with your child’s teacher to know when to utilize these ongoing pick up times.

You can see the official press release here (bit.ly/DOEPressReleaser8-7-2020). In response to this announcement, the Nimitz Elementary staff and faculty will be working to shift their models of curriculum and instruction to facilitate all student needs by the opening of school. Please be on the lookout for updates throughout next week.

Kindergarten Orientation POSTPONED- Due to the changes in the school schedule, the Kindergarten Orientation (originally scheduled for 8/10) will be postponed until further notice.

8/3/2020- Kindergarten Testing, Orientation, ABCD Day Changes

If you are planning to bring your Kindergarten aged student to the NES campus in the coming days, please read this important letter (bit.ly/NESKinderLetter8-3-2020) from Principal Kagami.

7/31/2020- NES Schedule Adjustments in Response to BOE

As of July 30th, 2020 the Hawaii Board of Education has ruled that the start of the 2020-2021 School Year will officially begin on August 17th, 2020. This has been pushed back from our previous start date of August 4th, 2020.

Due to this change, the Nimitz Elementary Faculty and staff will be working hard to not only prepare for the start for the school year, but continue to communicate with you as we make adjustments. Some of our adjustments include…

Kindergarten Testing Schedule and Orientation- As of now, we plan to carry out our Kindergarten Testing Schedule on August 4th through August 7th. However, a finalized adjusted daily schedule will be shared on Monday, August 3rd, 2020.

K-6 Distance Learning Only Option Deadline Extension- Due to the nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nimitz Elementary faculty understands that families may be apprehensive to allow their children on campus for any type of face-to-face instruction. With this understanding in mind, NES families will be provided a Distance Learning Only (DLO) Option to take the place of a face-to-face environment. In order to facilitate this, the Nimitz staff has elected to enlist a new distance learning program called Acellus Learning Accelerator for our K-6 students. For more information about our DLO program, please refer to the COVID-19 tab on our school website (http://nimitzelementary.hidoe.us/
