Seiza Sitting-in-Stillness meditation class taught by Buddhist Minister Reverend Miki Nakura

The class is taught by Rev. Miki Nakura, of Higashi Hongan-ji temple in Kyoto, and the Jodo-Shinshu Shin-Buddhist New York Sangha, will lead a Seiza meditation.

Seiza meditation is a universal method of sitting and breathing quietly with a goal of experiencing a peaceful and present-focused life. We sit in a chair or on a floor cushion while maintaining proper posture, breathing, and putting full strength into the lower belly. Seiza helps the mind and body to become stable and calm. It guides us to self-harmonization and inner peace that are invaluable in such uncertain times.

Seiza method focuses on the correct posture and breathing:

1. Firmly erect lower back to maintain a natural, gravity-aligned posture.

2. Exhale slowly and as long as possible through your nose.

3. Put your full strength into the lower belly while breathing out.

The Seiza Sitting-in-Stilness meditation, which has been taught in New York and throughout the U.S., Japan, Europe, and South America, will be practiced together and taught at a venue in Boston, and broadcast online via Zoom from there.
