Class of 2024
Any of you looking at a Nov 1st deadline - we need to meet before Oct 18th - that will leave me two weeks to write and upload your rec.
Keep in mind that I would ideally like to meet with you during your study hall - if not, after school, but there are limited days for that. I might also be busy at times during your study hall -- so my suggestion is to get the counselor rec done soon and set a meeting time.
Resource of the Week
A balanced college list will have:
3 - 4 Reach Schools:
Student’s academic profile is not as strong as the middle 50% of students who are typically admitted.
AND/OR the college’s admit rate is less than 25%.
The student’s chances for being admitted are low.
3 - 4 Target Schools
Student’s academic profile is similar to the middle 50% of students who are typically admitted.
Admit rates are typically between 25-65%.
These schools sometimes admit and sometimes deny students like you.
1 - 2 Star Schools:
Student’s academic profile is stronger than the middle 50% of students who are typically admitted.
Typically have an admit rate that is higher than 75%.
The student’s chances for being admitted are high.
Key To Success:
EVERY school on your list should be a place that you would be excited to attend.
In other words, if you wouldn’t want to attend a college, don’t apply.

From the Dean of Admissions at Dartmouth University
With the hope that it might be of help to you and colleagues, and to those you serve, I wanted to let you know that I have posted the first two episodes of Season 4 of my podcast, Admissions Beat. Those episodes are available on a range of platforms, and you can find links here on the podcast homepage.
For those who may be new listeners, the mission of Admissions Beat is to provide "news you can use" at each step on the pathway to college. Each Tuesday this fall, I will post a new episode in which my guests and I seek to strike a welcoming, reassuring perspective and set an approach intended to build confidence in prospective applicants.
In the season premiere episode, posted on Sept. 12, I assess the extraordinary college admissions news cycle in recent months and serve up advice for applicants and parents—and for you, as counselors, as well—on steering through it. I’m joined by Elena Hicks, assistant vice provost and dean of admission at Southern Methodist University, and Jacques Steinberg, former New York Times journalist and co-author of “The College Conversation: A Practical Companion for Parents to Guide Their Children Along the Path to Higher Education.”
Episode 2, posted on Sept. 19, is titled, “An Admissions Checklist for Jittery Seniors, Part 1.” For that discussion, I’m joined by Kate Boyle Ramsdell, director of college counseling at Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, Mass.; Erica Rosales, executive director of College Match, a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles that works with low-income students; and Darryl Tiggle, director of college counseling at Friends School of Baltimore.
If you haven’t done so already, I hope you’ll consider giving Admissions Beat a listen. I also hope you will subscribe and share the podcast homepage link with students and parents. And for those of you who are returning listeners: Thank you!

Ladder Internship Program
Some background on Ladder Internships. In the program, students work 1-1 with a supervisor at a top start-up company or non-profit. During that time, they build a real world project with the company inside of a real work setting. The companies and founders come from theY Combinator, Harvard ILabs, Wharton, Google, Microsoft, McKinsey & Company, among others. The program is also selective - we had 500 students apply for our summer cohort and we accepted about 25%.
Students who used to study within Myanmar and are now at universities or in internships across the US have teamed up to form a network that wants to give back to high school students within Myanmar.
On the left is their flyer. If you would like free mentorship, help with your university research, filling out applications or writing essays, go to their website and they will find someone to help you.
University of the Pacific
Any student from ISY who applies and is accepted to the University of the Pacific qualifies for a 50% tuition discount. Please see Mr. A-G for details.
