ISKL Co-Curricular Activities by CAS Strands

**IMPORTANT: Please check to see which groups are regular 'clubs' and which groups are 'meet ups'. Regular clubs, JV and Varsity Athletics are considered as 'supervised' CAS experiences, whilst 'Meet Ups' are 'unsupervised' CAS experiences. The default setting for CAS is to sign up for regular, supervised clubs for your skill development and other CAS learning outcomes. See which groups are designated as 'Meet Ups' here.

Creativity

...is exploring and extending ideas leading to an original or interpretive product or performance.

Creativity can be explored in different areas: visual, performative and literary arts; speech and debates, information technology, etc. It provides opportunities for students to develop different kinds of skills and knowledge, and leads to the appreciation of human imagination, ingenuity, and crafts in both familiar and unfamiliar territories. It can also be problem-solving ideas in certain situations.

Here are some examples of clubs and productions that you can join:

- HACS (HS Advanced Computer Sci. Club)

- HS Dance

- HS Drama Productions

- IASAS Cultural Convention Events (art, drama, film, forensics, photography)

- Jazz Club

- Robotics

- SEA Forensics Events: Debate, Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Interpretation, and Original Oratory.

Activity

...is physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle.

The Activity strand reminds all of us that our body needs physical work or exercise in order to remain healthy. This is important because the IB Diploma Program does not have PE, so students should take care of their health and physical fitness.

Since each person has a different level of stamina and athletic ability, Activity can be done in a variety of ways . It can be personal fitness with our school's trainer, Mr. Jeyen Ramachandran or with another trainer off-campus; it can be recreational sport, or athletics in Junior Varsity or Varsity teams at school.

Here is the list of competitive team sports (Varsity Athletics including IASAS):

Season 1:

- Cross Country

- Soccer/ Football

- Volleyball

Season 2:

- Basketball

- Dance

- Rugby/ Touch Rugby

- Swimming

- Tennis

- Pre-Season and 'Season 4' Athletics Training

Here are some non-competitive options:

- Climbing Club

- Elective Courses offered by the Physical Education Department

- Personal fitness with Mr. Jeyen Ramachandran

You may also take lessons or join events sponsored by ISKL or another organisation:

- 24-Hour Race to Stop Human Trafficking

- Ballet and other kinds of dance classes

- Fitness centres near you with a personal coach

- Horseback riding

- Marshall arts (karate, capoeira, etc.)

- Pilates

- Sports clubs in KL, e.g. KLYS Soccer, Saracens Rugby, etc.

- Training for special athletic events, e.g. marathon, triathlon, etc.

- Yoga

There may be other kinds of experiences that could contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Please consult the CAS Coordinator if you have any questions.

Service

...is collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need. There are four types of service: direct, indirect, advocacy, and research. Service must be unpaid work.

Students should explore the four types of service. The only requirement is that all IB Diploma students must participate in direct service with people who live in different circumstances outside of the ISKL community. This can be done through any of the ISKL's community partnership clubs. The minimum commitment required is for one season (6 - 7 weeks) or equivalent. See the document here for more information.

Direct Service with the ISKL HS Community Partnership Clubs:

Mondays:

- Malaysian Karen Organization (MKO)

Tuesdays:

- Chin Cheras Community Partnership

- 'Within Malaysia' for Tasputra Perkim

- Key Club Outreach with Zotung Refugee Catholic Learning Centre (ZRCLC): Key Club

- Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)

Thursdays:

- Fugee School

- MSRI: Middle Eastern Refugees Club (MER-C)

- Special Children's School of Ampang (SCSOA)

In addition to the above, direct service can also be done through coaching or tutoring within the ISKL community.

Indirect service tends to be carried out in the form of fundraising for various needs. This is fine, provided that you already know someone or something about the organisation/ group that you want to help through fundraising.

Advocacy examples include Habitat 4 Humanity's '40-Hour Famine', '24-Hour Run to Stop Human Trafficking', 'Meatless Mondays', '24-Hour Vegan Challenge', 'Silent Hour' by Pride Club, etc., advocating for human and animal rights, etc.

Research examples include surveys and statistical analyses undertaken by Green Council, Earth Club, and Gardening Club to find more ways to make ISKL greener and sustainable, or through GAP trips to examine issues of global importance that are affecting nature and economy in our vicinity and beyond.

You may also try these and other kinds of Service at school:

- Amnesty International

- Coaching: Middle League, Elementary

- Community Building: International Fest, STARS Admissions Tour Guide, etc.

- Earth Club (monthly recycling, etc.)

- Gardening Club (HS 4th floor roof top)

- Green Council

- Pride (LGBT issues)

- Service Council

- Student Leadership Team (SLT)

- Tutoring: NHS, Middle School, etc.

There may be other kinds of Service experiences both on and off-campus. Please consult the CAS Coordinator if you have any questions.

Involved in CAS Experiences Off-Campus? As mentioned above, you may also discuss different options in KL and beyond with the CAS Coordinator. If your supervisor is not an ISKL member of faculty or staff, then visit the next section called 'Non-ISKL CAS Activities' to learn the steps you need to take to have your CAS experiences off-campus approved.
