ISKL CAS Projects
Student Initiatives, Passion, and Agency in CAS Projects
CAS projects allow students to initiate an event or program that we currently do not have at school or needed somewhere in the communities that we know. You need to plan and implement at least one project using the CAS stages in real life and by collaborating in 'reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need'.
Student initiatives and 'leading by doing' are essential here. These should have you engage with issues of global importance and ethical implications, both in your local contexts and elsewhere. You may also initiate an event or program within a structure that already exists at school to enhance or enrich the current activities, supporting the causes being advocated for.
Listed below are some of the current and past CAS project examples. Have a look and start investigating your own ideas -- brainstorm with people in your club, organisation, etc., for new CAS project ideas where your interests, skills and talents could benefit a cause or individuals in reciprocal and respectful engagement.
1. Examples of the Recent Past and New Initiatives:
Environmental Sustainability: Earth Club/ Service & Sustainability
Eco Schools Conference (April 2019; Green Council)
Farmer's Market/ Eco Market (Earth Club and Green Council): This was a special event that took place independently and also in conjunction with the Eco Schools Conference above. Some students in Earth Club contacted some local farmers and vendors selling organic vegetables and fruit, and set up stalls with other items that featured local food, crafts and mini maker spaces. This was able to actualise the concept of 'think globally, act locally'.
Lumaki: A sustainability club that emerged from a GAP trip to the Philippines. They did tree planting and sold some locally made products to raise awareness for deforestation problems and efforts for reforestation.
Upcycling of textile, e.g. converting used uniform and clothes into shopping bags, pencil cases, etc. (Service Council)
Converting glass bottles to vases and planters (Earth Club)
Introducing Bye-Bye Plastic Bags to ISKL: A campaign to reduce the use of plastic bags.

Creating an English Language and Literature learning website for a refugee learning centre.
Hair for Hope: Donating hair to cancer patients who lost their hair through chemotherapy.
'Behind the Scenes' (BTS): Teaching English to Bus Monitors. This is a new initiative to help our bus monitors learn more English, so that they can feel more confident in speaking English on the job. A group of ISKL students surveyed the communication needs between bus monitors and students, and developed lesson plans to cater to these.
RDA Riding Therapy: Some sessions took place at the Polo Club next to the Ampang Hilir Campus.
Teaching English to MKO (Malaysian Karen Organization) students
Organising visits to Ronald McDonald House of Charity (RMHC): This McDonalds-sponsored corporate social responsibility (CSR) shelter is for those living in remote areas who needed a place to stay in cities for treatment of cancer and other serious illnesses. Our students organised a club to visit the patients to offer some emotional support.

'Behind the Scenes at ISKL: Teaching English to the Cleaning Staff': This was a new opportunity to facilitate interactive English lessons for the cleaning staff. It also had a small-scale language exchange in English and Bahasa Malaysia. Some international schools are doing a similar activity, and this was a wonderful opportunity to get to know the people who do 'behind the scenes' work (e.g. the staff who clean the canteen, bathrooms, classrooms, and hallways) to make our everyday life routines go smoothly at school (Class of 2015 students).
The Baby Wrap Project: This was realized by a student who learned about Impact Foundation in India whilst watching television. This organization is supported by doctors who treat patients without much money. This student collaborated with others to make blankets for babies to keep them warm in order to minimize infant deaths in rural India (Class of 2015 students). This work is mentioned in the 'Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) for the IB Diploma: An Essential Guide for Students' by Cambridge University Press here.
'Mer-C': This community service club was set up to interact and support refugee students from different Asian and Middle Eastern countries who came to Malaysia, through different activities such as sports and some academic support (Class of 2015 students).
'Within Malaysia': This community service club emerged from a club that could no longer continue to operate due to reasons beyond their control. Instead of simply folding the club, the student executive officers sought other service needs and found a refugee school near our school that needed some support in English lessons (Class of 2015 students).
Yoga/ Running Stops Traffick: These projects collaborated with organizations that advocate to end human trafficking world-wide. Students contacted these organizations and their local representatives here and organized events that drew many participants (Class of 2015 - 2017 students).

This event was successfully organized in October 2014, attended by inspiring speakers and enthusiastic audience from different divisions and departments of the ISKL school community (Class of 2015 - 2017 students). This work is mentioned in the 'Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) for the IB Diploma: An Essential Guide for Students' by Cambridge University Press here.

A group of students decided to take the matter into their own hands by posting positive and inspiring messages around the school, especially on bathroom doors where individual attention may be commanded, and getting together to discuss those 'awkward' social issues that need some courage and support (Class of 2014 students and ongoing).
