Online Learning & Teaching Practices
With the increase in students enrolled online, schools and families across the world are exploring the best ways to engage and support virtual learners in a healthy and positive way. Each week, I'll share an article or idea that Brave Virtual Academy teachers are talking about.
This week's article talks about the brain science behind Zoom fatigue. Some of the conversations our BVA faculty has been having is related to the amount of screen time that is developmentally appropriate for our learners and the idea that not all screen time is created equal.
Mental Health Resources
One of our concerns for our learners is ensuring that they are staying connected to others and that their social-emotional health stays strong.
MindPeace is an organization dedicated to the mental health of children. They have created virtual mindpeace rooms - spaces with calming videos, ideas for movement and exercises, refocusing activities, mindfulness work and other ideas organized by children's ages.
Your child's school guidance counselor is another great resource if you have concerns about your child's well-being while at home.
PS - Jennifer Earhart
ES - Sarah Kellett
MS - Katie Bunevich & Nick Carpenter
HS - Lateef Johnson, Nollis Cottrell, Lindsay Kearns, & Donita Jackson
Finally, you should have received an opportunity to partner your child with an IHHS high schooler who will schedule video chats - a one time event or on the regular. Learn more about Corona Care Callers program here.
Online STEM Opportunities
Each week I'll post connections to online enrichment opportunities that might be of interest to you and your child. This week's resource was shared with me by Heidi Perry. Amazon is interested in connecting underserved students with online STEM education. Some of the resources they connect to are fee-based and some are free. What's nice is Amazon offers a run down of the features and benefits of multiple providers of computer coding and other STEM based curriculum.
