How is distance learning working for your child? What about for you? If you have ever wondered how to help your child take more ownership over their schoolwork, this book club is for you!
Monica Gibson, IH teacher and parent will be joining me to lead discussion with our BVA Community on The Distance Learning Playbook for Parents. We will use the ideas in this book to discuss the pros and cons of virtual school and how to support your child within this environment. Spoiler alert: Students who succeed online, do better in face to face school, too! We hope you'll join us!

Online Learning & Teaching Practices
Each week, Brave Virtual Academy teachers and I discuss our core principles at the heart of BVA.
As a part of our BVA Community Book Club, participants learned from the Distance Learning Playbook for Parents about "mindframes". Student mindframes highlight the skills of self-regulation or "the ability to control one's behavior, emotions, and thoughts - in pursuit of long term goals" (p. 100).
Metacognition means to think about one's own thinking. When we teach learners to be reflective, they can see that learning has occurred and that their efforts resulted in their success. This promotes ownership of one's own learning and the understanding of the role learners play in actively building skills and understanding of content.
"Teaching something to someone else allows you to learn it twice" (p. 116).
How can parents help learners with
recognizing their own learning?
Encourage your child to teach you something they have learned in school. Reinforce accomplishments your child has completed. This will reinforce the knowledge and can instill a sense of pride.
Encourage your child to teach the family something they have learned on their own. A family night "symposium" can help everyone to share one small skill or bit of knowledge that enriches everyone and can offer children a sense of ownership, competence, and fun.
Talk with your child about learning, not doing.
Ensure your child has practice opportunities so that learning transfers.

Are you looking to encourage your avid readers at home or help build a stronger reading habit in your child? What about a family edition of March Book Madness? A common theme in classrooms across the country is to introduce students to some new reads with a playful twist on the brackets of college basketball. You could nominate your own books, or use the resources here or here to explore and vote on which books "win". Be sure to share the results!
Thanks to those of you who answered our survey from last week. Of the responses, two-thirds were "yea" for snow days and the remaining third were "nay". Didn't weigh in yet? Fill it out now!
As a reminder, any inclement weather delays or cancellations will be followed by both face-to-face students and BVA students.
All classrooms will be celebrating Black History Month. Talk to your child about what he or she is learning, reading, and discussing related to Black History.
