Planning Ahead! Thanks to those that answered our BVA Planning Survey. We'd love to hear from the 50% of families yet to take part!
Responding to this form is not a formal commitment for programming next year.Indian Hill High School Scheduling
The High School Counseling Team has worked together to make course scheduling for the 2021-2022 school year virtual friendly! Students in grades 8-11 should follow the resources and dates linked here to get schedule requests submitted by March 18th.
Ohio State Testing Season will begin in April and run through early May. Each school is planning the best fit for students in grades 3-8 and for students taking Algebra, Geometry, Biology, American History, or Government. Stay tuned for more information from your child's school about BVA student state tests.
Each week, Brave Virtual Academy teachers and I discuss our core principles at the heart of BVA.
With recent announcements of the success of Future Cities (Luke Bergstrom, Myles Chen, Nolan Horton, Arpad Lallement, & Aaron Scott) and Math Counts teams (Lillian, Liu, Rohit & Rahul Raman, Arjun Velayutham qualify for State), among many other great accomplishments of our Indian Hill Students this year, I am reminded of the role extra-curricular opportunities can play in shaping student interests and avocations. I believe that the power of student choice, a strong adult advocate, and a flexible approach toward a focused goal are all factors that make extracurriculars great avenues for student learning. I've included a couple of resources to help you think about the role outside of school explorations might play for your child, especially as spring tends to be the season of readiness for something fresh and new!
Women's History Month
I consider the calendar connection to specific groups of people as an invitation to learn more about cultures I may be a member of and those I am outside of. As both a student and a teacher, I often learned or heard about the same people held up as exemplars - Rosa Parks, Amelia Earhardt, & Susan B. Anthony, for example. It might be time for us to go a little deeper and to learn about pioneers and leaders who perhaps we've yet to meet. Maybe we can connect with people representative of our own interests (first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - Aretha Franklin) or of times and situations we aspire to better understand (Vandana Shiva, Margaret Chung, or Yaa Asantewaa). In any case, consider inviting your family to learn something new this month about the accomplishments of women and their role in developing our shared history.

Students on School Grounds
As the weather becomes nicer, hopefully we'll all feel more motivated to get outside! Just a reminder that students may not be on school grounds unless they are participating in an activity with Indian Hill faculty or coaches. We would love for our BVA students to join face to face building teams and clubs, if that fits with your family's health considerations. If participating in face to face activities is not a good fit, consider taking advantage of Stephan Field, Camp Denison Memorial Park or the other natural park spaces in our area!
HS Attendance Reminder
Since our #HSBVA Students have a different model of virtual learning that promotes more flexibility and freedom, we do not take daily attendance for High School students in BVA. Attendance is reviewed weekly and is determined by participation in online and IH Canvas courses. The purpose of this approach is to allow students to participate in internships, jobs, and high-level sports and arts programs more easily. Some of our learners have found success in completing an entire course before beginning the next or find that working in the evenings is more productive than in the morning.
For students needing additional support in making progress in BVA, students meet regularly with BVA Liaisons, have access to online learning labs, teacher office hours, Flextime online sessions, and learning contracts to assist with work completion and to offer content-based tutoring. If you have concerns about your child's progress in Brave Virtual Academy, please contact his or her Liaison or Counselor.
