BVA Community Town Hall Meetings
On Tuesday, September 15th, from 7 - 8 pm, we will host the first of our BVA Community Town Hall meetings. Throughout September, we will host a K-12 audience and then have sessions that are specific to school beginning in October. Our format will be a 10-15 minute introductory presentation on a topic relevant to learning in a virtual environment and then follow up with discussion and questions in an open dialogue. As these meetings develop, we’ll invite guest speakers to talk about issues specific to age/grade level learners as well as more general topics such as mental health, fostering curiosity, promoting a growth mindset, and more. Our first session will be about strategies to help learners to appropriately pace their asynchronous work. I hope to see you there! Stay tuned for the link. These sessions will be recorded and posted for families unable to join us for the live event.
School Pictures
One of the highlights of any school year are school photos. We are working on plans to make sure that our BVA learners can either come to school to get professional photos taken by Lifetouch or can submit a selfie for our yearbooks! More info to come!
Online Course Updates
Middle and High School BVA students should have access to all of the courses listed on their schedules for first semester. Please contact Kim Given or you High School Liaison if you or your child is having any issues with online courses.
Parent Information and Meet the Teacher Nights
We hope you were able to join us for our Parent Information and Meet the Teacher nights held on September 3rd (Elementary), September 8th (Middle), and September 10th (Primary & High School). If not, click on the attached links to find recordings of what you missed.
Virtual Parent Teacher Conferences
Our Brave Virtual Academy Educator Team will be hosting Parent-Teacher Conferences online. Teachers will post an appointment calendar for you to sign up for a time slot to speak about your child's progress. Even better, invite your child to be a part of the conference with you! We are working on helping students articulate their progress around goals met through evidence.

NEW!! Corona Care Callers Program
IHHS Junior Sophie Chabris invites families of K-8 BVA students to sign up for a high schooler to make a connection with them via audio or video call.
From Sophie:
It is our hope to build connections between all of our Braves, currently at home engaged in our BVA, from K-8 with our HS students. If you believe this is something that your child would be interested in and benefit in, please consider registering. Once you register your child, high school students will coordinate with you and your child and create a google meet/zoom to remotely meet and connect. Participation in this program is completely optional. One of our high school student volunteers will connect with your child for however long your child would like, though we expect the conversations to last no more than 30 minutes. These meetings will be weekly or monthly depending on schedules.
We would love to have your student sign up. We have plenty of volunteers so don’t worry about your child not having someone! To access the ‘sign-up’ form click HERE.
BVA Community Book Club:
In October, we will start a book club for parents and teachers around what I am calling the “Reimagining Education Trifecta”. Ted Dintersmith and Tony Wagner have created a host of books that help us to think about what’s really important for our young scholars. What Schools Could Be, Creating Innovators, and Most Likely to Succeed explore ways schools can better support learning for every child. I would love for us to talk about how the home and school partnership can begin to address some of these ideas.
Dintersmith, T. (2018). What school could be: Insights and inspiration from teachers across America. Princeton: Princeton University Press.
Wagner, T., & Dintersmith, T. (2016). Most likely to succeed: Preparing our kids for the innovation era. New York, NY: Scribner.
Wagner, T., & Compton, R. A. (2015). Creating innovators: The making of young people who will change the world. New York, NY: Scribner.
Overall, your child’s teachers and I want to encourage you to take this journey with us. We have a unique opportunity in the face of a health crisis to build something better. How can we use the need to change to catapult our teaching and learning practices to a whole new level? How can we overcome the barrier of distance to move us beyond the status quo? We look forward to finding the possibilities and the answers with you and your children.
