We've found an even better book! We're pushing back the start date of our BVA Community Book Club to second quarter because we found a book that will help you with your learners at home and bridge the gap between home and school. From Corwin: "The Distance Learning Playbook for Parents: How to Support Your Child′s Academic, Social, and Emotional Development in Any Setting - This essential guide will arm you with the tools and insight to:
Create an environment conducive to learning, establish routines, and most importantly, take care of yourself and your child
Maximize the time you spend supporting learning by focusing on what is proven to work best in education
Help your child develop the cognitive attitudes and habits that foster creativity, critical thinking, and increased responsibility for their learning
Support the development of your child’s social and emotional learning skills, including the ability to navigate social interactions, build friendships, and regulate emotions at a time when they have never been more important to have, and more challenging to maintain
The Distance Learning Playbook for Parents outlines supportive strategies for navigating virtual environments to ensure effective and impactful learning that aligns the needs and expectations of teachers, parents, and students alike."
Our first meeting will be 7:30pm on October 28th.
Interested in taking part? Sign up here.
We still love and plan to read and discuss What School Could Be by Ted Dintersmith and will start that work during third quarter.
Online Learning & Teaching Practices
Each week, Brave Virtual Academy teachers and I discuss our core principles at the heart of BVA.
As the quarter comes to a close, educators are naturally reflecting on how we are measuring student learning. The focus on meeting standards rather than assignment completion rate, attention to quality of performance over compliance, feedback coupled with an iterative revision process are all elements we are working to incorporate and refine in our practice. And we see it paying off!
Additionally, we are thankful for your feedback on what is working and what could be improved for your child in BVA. We are continuing to make improvements in all of our programs and encourage you to keep engaging in the conversation.
This week, we're sharing Angela Duckworth's recent article (author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance) on the power of hard work and practice in developing skills that from the outside, may look effortless. She says that beyond cognitive aptitude, students need to develop more skills in order to be successful. Skills and traits like teamwork, honesty, loyalty, grit, and creativity are all at the heart of supporting a community - in the classroom and in our neighborhoods and workspaces. Read to find out more!
This Week's Enrichment Resources
Each week I'll post resources that offer extension and enrichment opportunities for our BVA learners. Last week, I shared a link to the Super Saturday Program - there's still time to sign up! Classes begin October 31st.
This week's focus is costume design! Does your child have Halloween on the brain? Check out these resources on designing costumes and level up for trick-or-treat!
For grades 6-12 - this site includes a rubric to judge the success of your costume creation.
This site focuses on costume design for theater and has links to children's productions for inspiration.
This site focuses on using recycled materials for costume design and has links to activities for different ages of learners.
We can't wait to see what your child makes! Be sure to share photos with us @BraveVirtual!
