Responding to Changing Needs: Did you fill out our Fourth Quarter Program Choice Survey? It closes Wednesday 3PM.
Planning Ahead! Thanks to those that answered our BVA Planning Survey. We'd love to hear from the 50% of families yet to take part!
Responding to this form is not a formal commitment for programming next year.Indian Hill High School Scheduling
The High School Counseling Team has worked together to make course scheduling for the 2021-2022 school year virtual friendly! Students in grades 8-11 should follow the resources and dates linked here to get schedule requests submitted. Current 8th graders will be meeting online with HS Counselors on Wednesday, March 17th to share their schedule plans. Current 9th-11th graders should turn in their completed schedule requests to their counselor by Thursday, March 18th.
Ohio State Testing Season will begin in April and run through early May. Each school is planning the best fit for students in grades 3-8 and for students taking Algebra, Geometry, Biology, American History, or Government. Each week, Brave Virtual Academy teachers and I discuss our core principles at the heart of BVA.
Last week, IHMSBVA teacher Mrs. Roark tasked her English students to teach the rest of the class literature analysis through fiction signposts. Many of our teachers have figured out that when students lead learning in class they, themselves, learn more deeply and remember that learning longer. Additionally, the students being taught by their peers also benefit from the exchange. Researchers (Including Wagner & Gansemer-Topf, 2005) have reported the preparation of presenting to an authentic audience for the purpose of teaching rather than just reporting their learning raises the stakes, increases cognitive engagement, and even impacts the sense of community connection in the classroom.
DST: Love It or Hate It?
Over the weekend we "sprung forward" to welcome in another yearly adjustment in our clocks. I may have found a clock in my house that was on the right time again having forgotten to ever switch it to regular EST last November. Bemoaning a loss of sleep or overjoyed to have more daylight to play outside? Here are a couple of resources that can spark "timely" conversation with kids.
Students on School Grounds
As the weather becomes nicer, hopefully we'll all feel more motivated to get outside! Just a reminder that students may not be on school grounds unless they are participating in an activity with Indian Hill faculty or coaches. We would love for our BVA students to join face to face building teams and clubs, if that fits with your family's health considerations. If participating in face to face activities is not a good fit, consider taking advantage of Stephan Field, Camp Denison Memorial Park or the other natural park spaces in our area!
HS Attendance Reminder
Since our #HSBVA Students have a different model of virtual learning that promotes more flexibility and freedom, we do not take daily attendance for High School students in BVA. Attendance is reviewed weekly and is determined by participation in online and IH Canvas courses. The purpose of this approach is to allow students to participate in internships, jobs, and high-level sports and arts programs more easily. Some of our learners have found success in completing an entire course before beginning the next or find that working in the evenings is more productive than in the morning.
For students needing additional support in making progress in BVA, students meet regularly with BVA Liaisons, have access to online learning labs, teacher office hours, Flextime online sessions, and learning contracts to assist with work completion and to offer content-based tutoring. If you have concerns about your child's progress in Brave Virtual Academy, please contact his or her Liaison or Counselor.
