You have until December 13th to notify us through this form if you are planning to change your child's program from BVA to F2F for second semester. If there is no change planned at this time, you do not need to fill out the form.
Online Learning & Teaching Practices
Each week, Brave Virtual Academy teachers and I discuss our core principles at the heart of BVA.
As a part of our BVA Community Book Club, participants learned from the Distance Learning Playbook for Parents about "mindframes". Student mindframes highlighted the skills of self-regulation or "the ability to control one's behavior, emotions, and thoughts - in pursuit of long term goals." (p. 100). The first one, "Know your current level of understanding" focuses on teaching learners to understand what they currently know and what they need to learn next to continue to grow.
What I like about this mindframe is the emphasis we are all on a path and will continue to grow. This mindframe destigmatizes test scores from serving as a limit of future possible performance and instead suggests they are a pin drop on the map of all learning. It is in being able to define where one's current understanding lies that we begin to set achievable goals to get to the next level. Learners should be aware of and own their performance data. Test scores should not be used to define or label a learner but to represent an estimated snapshot of understanding at a single point in time.
How can parents help learners with
knowing their own current levels of understanding?
Encourage students to keep a folder or portfolio of their work representative of their understanding and performance. Engage in discussion about how skills and content knowledge have increased over time.
Be a "strengths-spotter" - Identify some areas of success represented in the work/data. Focus on more than areas for growth.
When confronted with a problem, help learners assess what they already know - parents can help to scaffold or break down the problem if they get stuck rather than giving their child the answer.

This Week's Enrichment Resources
Each week I'll post resources that offer extension and enrichment opportunities for our BVA learners.
This week, we're going to the pictures! Teachers are starting to ask learners to make videos to share their learning, given feedback, teach a concept to others, and as a way to tell a story. Video and movie creation can be an amazing creative outlet and with online tools, is becoming easier for the novice and younger learner to manage. Student Created Videos in the Classroom gives you an idea of how teachers are using this tool with learning. You can build upon these ideas, or go in a different direction. Maybe your child is interested in learning more about the art of movie making or wants to start their own youtube channel. In any case, there is value in allowing students to explore their world through their own lens.
Thanks to those of you who joined us in reading The Distance Learning Playbook for Parents by Wiseman, Fischer, Frey, and Hattie. The content sparked some great ideas and conversation. The most valuable part was the discussion with one another about what was working and not working with our children at home.
Next semester, we plan to run another session for The Distance Learning Playbook based on feedback from our first group. We'll also jump into a new book club for What School Could Be by Ted Dintersmith.
