We're shifting from paper health care checks to Pick Up Patrol. Stay tuned for directions on registration and use. If your child will be coming into the building for club meetings, photos, testing, or other reasons, we ask you to use Pick Up Patrol to report that they are healthy before interaction with other students.
Online Learning & Teaching Practices
Each week, Brave Virtual Academy teachers and I discuss our core principles at the heart of BVA.
Mrs. Roark shares this week about the MS English Department's practice of teaching students to recognize the "signposts" of a story. Teaching students to think about their thinking builds awareness of and agency over their learning - it makes what is normally invisible, visible.
"Signposts are a metacognitive strategy from the book Notice and Note, published by Kylene Beers and Robert Probst in 2013. Metacognition, in simple terms, means that someone is aware of and understands the process of their thinking.
Teachers utilize signposts as a way for the reader to recognize that school based reading should not be approached in the same way as pleasure or independent reading. After students are explicitly taught the various signposts for fiction and nonfiction, the next step is for them to stop or pause, take notice of said signpost and identify it, and note how it may be important to comprehension of the text.
This strategy really enhances the ability to think critically, which transcends to all language based subjects, or language based problems in every subject!"
One of our #MSBVA students, Ardisha Thawrani, got so excited by this strategy that she listed the signposts she noticed for ALL of the Harry Potter books (original canon, of course). Interested in what she has to say about the other books? Click here.
This Week's Enrichment Resources
Each week I'll post resources that offer extension and enrichment opportunities for our BVA learners.
This week is a remix! Here is a link to all of the resources we've posted this year.

Upcoming Testing
Standardized testing can only be offered in-person. Testing is optional.
Students will not miss out on placement opportunities due to opting out of testing. Testing offers a chance for teachers to have benchmarks of students' cognitive level or content understanding. We recognize that offering testing during Thanksgiving Break is not ideal, but these are the only days in the current calendar when we can provide a socially distanced environment for BVA learners to participate.
Please register and report student wellness through Pick Up Patrol before your child comes into the building.
