In the IHMS Brave Virtual Academy, we give a shoutout each quarter to celebrate the growth, hard work, and success of our learners. This quarter, the students named in this video knocked it out of the park! We appreciate the role that parents play to support their learners in their success. Primary and Elementary school students are highlighted each month through our EduHeroes program.

Each week, Brave Virtual Academy teachers and I discuss our core principles at the heart of BVA.
Scholarship is a key component that is embedded in all classrooms at Indian Hill. This week, we'll be highlighting the scholarship of our fourth-grade students. Across programs, teachers are working to ensure that curriculum standards and key educational experiences are common for learners in brick and mortar spaces as well as in virtual classrooms. All fourth graders have been hard at work learning about endangered animals and the scholarship skills needed to research and publish work.
Fourth-graders explored the characteristics, diet, causes of endangerment, and solutions to their specific species' plight. They created websites to organize and publish the information they learned. In this way, students are contributing to the greater learning community by sharing their work with an audience outside of themselves and their classrooms. "The process focused on research and writing paragraphs that follow specific nonfiction text structures. These paragraphs were then supported with student selected text features to add understanding and interest to the site" reports BVA fourth-grade teacher, Kelly Vaughan.
Connected learners know how to find experts and trusted resources to deepen their understanding of complex ideas. Engaging with an authentic audience serves to introduce learners to the greater community of scholarship and learning as well as provide meaning to the work they do.
Congratulations to these BVA students' whose work was recognized as exemplary of the scholarship habits we want to build in our learners.
Noah Kagan tells us about the problems facing mountain gorillas.
Owin Abeysinghe published his site about whale sharks.
Below are some resources that talk about habits and attitudes linked to scholarship. Take time to talk with your child about the strategies they use in working on assignments. When it seems like a good fit, share your pondering of ideas, curiosity, or exploration of multiple perspectives "out loud" with your child. Many of the thoughts patterns we have developed are still new to our children and they can benefit from adults "thinking out loud" with them.
Thanks to those of you who joined us in reading The Distance Learning Playbook for Parents by Wiseman, Fischer, Frey, and Hattie. The content sparked some great ideas and conversation. The most valuable part was the discussion with one another about what was working and not working with our children at home.
In February and March, we plan to run another session for The Distance Learning Playbook based on feedback from our first group. We'll also jump into a new book club for What School Could Be by Ted Dintersmith.
