BVA Community Town Hall Meetings
10/13 7-8pm - Primary School - Dr. Owens, Mr. Gruber, and Dr. Given welcome Growth Mindset expert, Mrs. Dawkins to share tips and strategies for building healthier and more resilient learners. We'll also be sharing about Literacy Night followed by your questions and discussion. Please RSVP here.
10/27 7-8pm - Elementary School - Mrs. Buell and Mrs. Kellett will join to talk about mental wellness for our learners and then opening the floor for questions and discussion. Please RSVP here.
We've found an even better book! We're pushing back the start date of our BVA Community Book Club to second quarter because we found a book that will help you with your learners at home and bridge the gap between home and school. From Corwin: "The Distance Learning Playbook for Parents: How to Support Your Child′s Academic, Social, and Emotional Development in Any Setting - This essential guide will arm you with the tools and insight to:
Create an environment conducive to learning, establish routines, and most importantly, take care of yourself and your child
Maximize the time you spend supporting learning by focusing on what is proven to work best in education
Help your child develop the cognitive attitudes and habits that foster creativity, critical thinking, and increased responsibility for their learning
Support the development of your child’s social and emotional learning skills, including the ability to navigate social interactions, build friendships, and regulate emotions at a time when they have never been more important to have, and more challenging to maintain
The Distance Learning Playbook for Parents outlines supportive strategies for navigating virtual environments to ensure effective and impactful learning that aligns the needs and expectations of teachers, parents, and students alike."
Our first meeting will be 7:30pm on October 28th.
Stay tuned for future virtual meeting dates and times.
We still love and plan to read and discuss What School Could Be by Ted Dintersmith and will start that work during third quarter.
Online Learning & Teaching Practices
Each week, Brave Virtual Academy teachers and I discuss our core principles at the heart of BVA.
This week we are paying special attention to connectivity. Our article focuses on the power of collaboration. Teachers are looking at ways for BVA learners to connect and work with one another as well as connect and learn with our face to face students. You should be seeing some plans and evidence of this work coming from your child's teachers!
This Week's Enrichment Resources
Each week I'll post resources that offer extension and enrichment opportunities for our BVA learners. Last week, I shared a link to the Super Saturday Program - there's still time to sign up! Classes begin October 31st.
This week's focus is STEM (or STEAM + Arts or STREAM + Reading & Arts). There are a host of great resources for projects and ideas that can be done at home. Perhaps you could even share some good ones that you have found?
ID Tech offers "after school" online STEM Classes. Perhaps a kit is more fun for the whole family? Maybe your child is ready to plan out his or her own STEM enrichment using vetted resources from The Ultimate STEM Guide for Kids. Finally, this might be the perfect time to take advantage of the flexible nature of BVA. Consider exploring STEM fields with the help of a mentor or an online lab course. Any way you slice it, STEM, STEAM, and STREAM give students the opportunity to solve real world problems, engage with authentic audiences, and may be a path toward future interests and passions!
With the end of the quarter approaching, Canvas is the best place to view grades and classroom feedback for your student. If you have not already signed up for a Canvas observer (parent) account, information on how you can do this and how your child can provide the code you need can be found at the IH Canvas for Parents Website. Additionally, this tutorial video can take you and your child through how to view grades and feedback inside Canvas. Please contact ashley.morrison@ihsd.us if you have any questions about Canvas or your student's teacher if there are specific questions about their class inside of Canvas.
