Hormone: Biochemistry and Function

About the course

Hormone: Biochemistry and function is a core course of B.Sc. (Honours) Biochemistry Programme (BSCBCH) which is being offered as the fourth Semester course under UGC-CBCS Scheme. The theory course of Hormone: Biochemistry and Function (BBCCT-119) is of 4 credits and a separate laboratory course (BBCCL-120) worth 2 credits is offered along with this course.

Study of hormones is known as endocrinology. It takes a multidisciplinary approach and is focused on signaling pathways among cells and deals with the structure, chemical nature, functions hormones that travel through the bloodstream to influence remote targets. Proper understanding of the effects and functions of hormones requires prior knowledge of physiology. Our body's endocrine system contains pancreas, thyroid, parathyroid, pineal, hypothalamus, adrenal and pituitary glands as well as ovary and testis. Additionally, it also encompasses many other organs that respond to, modify or metabolize hormones. The dynamic concert of feedback regulation and cellular actions of the hormones of the endocrine system underwrites the internal homeostasis of the human body.

The course is divided into 4 blocks, each block is based on a common theme. The course consists of 12 units.
