Gene Organisation, Replication and Repair is the ninth Core Course of B.Sc. (Honours) Biochemistry Programme (BSCBCH) being offered under UGC-CBCS Scheme. The theory course of Gene Organisation, Replication and Repair (BBCCT-117) has a credit weightage worth 4 credits and a separate laboratory course (BBCCL-118) worth 2 credits along with this course.

Gene Organisation, Replication and Repair has emerged and developed as a core subject of Biochemistry with simultaneous advances in the field of microscopy and modern biophysical techniques. These remarkable discovery and their applications in genome study has added to the understanding of the basic concepts of genome, DNA structure, genes, chromatin and chromosomes. This course provides comprehensive understanding of DNA replication, recombination, mutations and repair processes in a way that learners can apply this knowledge in understanding the life processes and develop an interest to pursue high quality research.

While studying this course learners will acquire basic information about the structure and various forms of DNA, about organization of genome in various life forms, supercoiling of DNA and its significance. They would also learn about the molecular basis of processes like DNA replication, recombination and transposition and understand the significance of these processes. Learners would also be exposed to learn about the various ways in which the DNA can be damaged leading to mutations and lesions, and different ways to repair DNA damage.

This theory course consists of 4 blocks which contain 13 Units. First block contains four units while the rest three blocks has three units each. Block I deals with the understanding of the basic concepts of genome, DNA structure, genes, chromatin and chromosomes. Block II is dedicated to DNA replication while Block III focuses on recombination, transposition and extranuclear DNA. Last block, Block IV is about molecular basis of mutations, DNA damage and repair.
