Early American History
In 1492 Christopher Columbus sails from Spain. He wants to go to Asia, but he arrives in America.
In 16th century Columbus’s discovery brings the Spanish to America. They convert the native people to Christianity and change their way of life.
In 1607 explorers from England start the first English colony in the USA. They call the area Virginia.
In 1620 a group of English settlers sail from Plymouth to America on a ship. They arrive at cape code in Massachussetts. Many more settlers from Britain and Holland come to live on the east coast of America over the next few years.
In 1763/1776 the settlers in America want to be a separate country. They don’t want to be an English colony any more. Americans are angry about the high taxes that they have to pay from England, they cannot vote and they have no one to represent them in the British parliament.
In 1773 some groups of angry Americans manifest a lot and at the end in 1775/1783 there is the American War of Independence, America wins the war and one of the Americans generals, George Washington, after the Declaration of Independence becomes the first President of USA.
