London is a very important city. It’s the capital of England and the United kingdom. It is situated on the banks of the river Thames in south east England. London is an international city and it’s important for business, culture and tourism, in fact, London attracts thousands of tourists every year. The area of London is 1,570 sq. km and it was founded by romans in ad 43. Its Roman name was Londinium.

ST.PAUL' S CATHEDRAL

London’s a historic city and it’s full of interesting old buildings and monuments. Westminster Abbey, St Paul’ s Cathedral and Trafalgar Square are important in the history of London. It is the cathedral of the city of London. St. Paul’ s Cathedral is in the part of London: the city.

BUCKINGHAM PALACE

Buckingham Palace is the residence of the Royal family in London. The Queen’ s Guard changes at 11.30 am every day in summer and every other day in winter. The Changing of the Guard takes place in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace.

THE TOWER BRIDGE

The Tower Bridge is the symbol of London. This bridge opens when ships pass. The Tower Bridge is the most famous bridge in London. It crosses the river Thames. The Tower Bridge is 244 m long with two towers each 65 m high.

This is a very old church. There are two twin towers on the west front.

Here you can see the tombs of famous people. Here kings and queens are crowned.

This is the most beautiful religious bulding in London.

london eye

It takes half an hour to make a full turn and can carry 800 passengers at once. It opened on new years eve 1999. It is 135 metres high. The London eye has 32 capsules.

TRAFALGAR SQUARE

Trafalgar Square is the most popular square of London and is situated in the west of the city. Its name commemorates the battle of Trafalgar of 1805. In the South of the square there is a monument dedicated to admiral Nelson and in front of the statue there are two fountains. In the corners there are statues dedicated to General Naper, to General May Havelock and to king George IV. In the fourth corner there is a contemporary art exhibition. In the north of the square there is the National Gallery, one of the most famous museums of the world were there are some of the greatest masterpieces of the world.

THE TOWER OF LONDON

William the Conqueror built it in 1078. It was a castle and a palace but then it became a prison and a place of execution.

Today there are the Crown Jewels and a collection of arms. The guards of the Tower are the beefeaters and they wear a red uniform. The Tower of London is nearly 1000 years old.

It is situated in the centre the London.

Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the striking clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster. The official name of the tower was Clock Tower, it was completed in 1859. The tower is a British cultural icon recognized all over the world. It is one of the most prominent symbols of the United Kingdom.

The Palace of Westminster serves as the meeting place for the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The palace is owned by the monarch and, for ceremonial purposes, retains its original status as a royal residence. The first royal palace constructed on the site dated from the 11th century, and Westminster became the primary residence of the King of England.

The National Gallery is the most important gallery of London.

This gallery was founded in 1824, it is situated in Trafagar Square. The National Gallery of London has got more than 2.300 paintings, the director is Gabriele Finaldi.

Every year this gallery has 6 million visitors. The National Gallery is one of the most important galleries in the world.

MUSEUM OF LONDON

The Museum of London is dedicated to he history of the city of London, from prehistory to today. You can enter the old shop, see the first taxis and historical finds characteristic of London.

London boasts several commercial areas and shopping streets, many of which are dedicated to specific products and categories. Some important places are:

1) Oxford street for designer wear;

2) Knightsbridge for the trendiest fashion;

3) King's road for antiques and chic dresses.

London is the capital of shopping! Harrods is a world famous department store with 230 departments. Don't forget Oxford street for shopping. It's over two miles long and has 300 shops. Or go to Portobello road market for its antiques, food and clothes.

Markets are a very important part of London's life and reflect its history and traditions as well as its great diversity. There is something for everyone!

Traditions and festivals

London is also a city of old traditions: there's the changing of the guard at Buckingham palace, the beefeaters at the tower of London and there are royal processions on special occasions.

London loves new celebrations, too, from rock concerts to sporting events and multicultural celebrations in the street, like the Chinese new year celebrations in Chinatown and the Caribben carnival in Notting Hill in August.

There are lots of big parks and over 6 million trees in London. In London you can walk around huge parks. In London there are 143 parks and gardens, 30% of the London area. Regent’s park is one the Royal parks of London. It’s situated in the north of central London.

London is a multicultural city full of contrasts and it’s very busy. The population of London is about 8 million people. A lot of foreigners work and study in London and it’s always full of foreign tourists, too.
