Lesson 11: Exploring music as a researcher on Western Art Music ①
(all the notes, sheet music, etc. from today should be kept in your Music Journal in Exploring music in context, under as a researcher, global context (if you're actually familiar with music here, then it'll be different), as AOI1 and/or AOI2)
As you may know that almost all music nowadays are based on music from Western Art Music
Introduction to music from The Middle Ages (The Medieval)(C.E. 450 to 1450)
power point presentation from me
Gregorian Chant
Hildegard of Bingen
Secular Music
sample sheet music (music notation of Gregorian Chant)
Think about these questions while you're listening:
When was this era?
What was happening in the world during this era?
Where was it happened?
Why were these music genres were born? Share your thoughts!
What can you hear from the sample music?
Composing technique (we'll explore on this next class)
church mode (check website here, or the textbook sent on Slack for further explanation!)
Teacher's reflection (no need to read)
2nd time teaching the same material to 2nd years, a lot of things went well and also lots of things didn't went well at all.
introduction to the era itself, especially the Japanese speakers, lack of the background knowledge of history of Europe, which made it difficult for them to understand and feel related to materials they learn from school, although some did able to relate the era to Japanese history but again, it's close to non-relevant
video is a good sum-up to the era itself so probably not as an introduction?
probably should also add some world history section for them to understand what was happening in that part of the world which led to inventions of musical culture itself (definitely add it for Japanese students as a side notes so they may also understand how people might felt back in that days
should also include the questions that stimulate their thinking before playing the music, and let them listen and no comments from me on the first time listening
should also ask them for any questions about the genre/materials as well and not just me asking (leading to inquiry)
