Sincerity is one of the founding core values of Sendai Ikuei Gakuen, which permeates all areas of school life - including research and academic writing. In order to foster relationships of trust and honesty with others, students and staff aspire to people of integrity. To this end, all IB students at Sendai Ikuei Gakuen are expected to understand and comply with the Academic Integrity policy, and adhere to the APA (American Psychological Association) guidelines for academic writing.
The IB defines academic misconduct as “a behaviour that results in, or may result in, the student or any other student gaining an unfair advantage (or a behaviour that disadvantages other students) in one or more assessment components.”
Academic misconduct is defined by the IB as a behaviour that results in, or may result in, the student or any other student gaining an unfair advantage (or a behaviour that disadvantages other students) in one or more assessment components (International Baccalaureate Organization, 2009, p. 3). Examples of academic misconduct include:
Plagiarism: the representation of the ideas or work of another person as the candidate’s own, without clear and explicit acknowledgement. This includes the use of translation software either intentionally or unwittingly;
Collusion: Supporting malpractice by another student, such as allowing one’s work to be copied or submitted for assessment by another;
Duplication of work: The presentation of the same work for different assessment components and/or diploma requirements;
Any other behaviour that gains an unfair advantage for a student or that affects the results of another student (for example, taking unauthorized material into an examination room, misconduct during an examination, falsifying a CAS record).
Any instance of plagiarism by students in any subject, including homework, assignments, or essays, is reported to the IB Dean.
1st time offence: a warning is given
2nd time offence: parents are called and warned that a subsequent offence would result in being removed from the programme
3rd time offense: students are given the opportunity to defend themselves, however they may removed from the programme
All students at Sendai Ikuei Gakuen are expected to submit academic writing in accordance with the APA guidelines (http://www.apastyle.org).
When Citations are Needed
If you refer to the writing of another, or it has helped to form your opinion / statement / claim, you must both cite it in your writing and include it in your bibliography. In order to avoid academic misconduct, you must either quote, paraphrase, or summarise the author. For each of these cases you are required to do an in-text citation and list it in the bibliography.
The following table outlines situations in which citations are necessary:
You do NOT need to cite a source when your statement is general knowledge, or if it is your own original idea.
Sources are always listed in alphabetical order, by the LAST NAME of the author or organization;
Your writing should be double spaced, and Arial size 12pt;
Reverse indent the sources in your bibliography (ensure the second lines of each source in your bibliography is indented);
Your reference list should include only the sources that you cited;
Capitalize the first letter of each word in titles but do not capitalize articles (a, the), short prepositions (in, on, at), or conjunctions (and, but);
If there is no published date, write “n.d.” (this means “no date”);
If the source is in another language, a translation must be written in square brackets [ ] after it;
When there is more than one author, write them all (last name and initial) in alphabetical order;
Capitalize the first word of the title or subtitle, and any proper nouns (names of people or places) that appear;
Use italics for titles of books and journals;
Abbreviate ‘page’ to “p.”. Multiple pages use (pp.);
Use Google Scholar to find sources (it will yield a more reliable search);
