Week 1 Term 1

We finished Week 1 with a bit of baking using eggs from the chickens and wild blackberries, some bike decorating in whanau groups and the Year 6's getting together to start their leadership Friday mornings.

Ways we work. We have been doing lots of stuff altogether as a Year 5 and 6 team. It's amazing how 68 students find a way to make themselves engaged and comfortable in their learning. This was us on Thursday working on our "Shout Out Art".

On Wednesday we started our first teacher read book. All 3 Year 5 and 6 classes are reading the same book to start the year. We are reading The Traitor and the Thief by Gareth Ward. Before we started reading we had a great discussion about the cover and made predictions for what we thought the book might be about. Ramona rightly made the connection that as the people look like they are dressed in Victorian clothes and there are machines it might be a set in Steampunk era. Last year during teacher reading lots of kids brought in their own copies of the book to read along. This was a pretty cool way to engage in the book. The Children's Bookshop in Kilbirnie doesn't have any copies at the moment, but they will order it in. If you're quick there are 3 copies available in local libraries.

Nikau, 2018 complete with chickens and eggs. Ready to go blackberry picking. A great way to start the year off. I'm excited!!
