If you have any students utilizing a BYU course this semester, please keep in mind, all courses are purchased as single semester offerings and must be completed within Heartland’s semester time frame. Please also note, in order to pass the course, the student must complete and pass the final. BYU is a rigorous offering, verifying student proficiency through a proctored final. Oftentimes, the final will determine the final grade in a BYU course, as it is a large percentage of the overall grade.
What Course Credit is Offered?
College & Career, A-G and AP*, Honors, Concurrent Enrollment with BYU for University Level Courses
Teacher-Led: Includes direct instruction and one-on-one mentoring. Typically, a Teacher-Led course is UC and/ College Board approved and meets A-G /AP credit, depending on the course
Online: the standard way BYU offers their non “a-g” courses. Our students have this option for elective courses only; core courses must be taken “Teacher-Led” as this format has UC approval
*AP Exams: Our school does not administer AP exams. Work with your HS counselor early in the semester of the course to determine options and arrangements for taking the AP exam. You may also review the College Board website to determine testing options.
Pacing Notice: In order to secure a proctor in time, please be sure all coursework is complete 3 weeks before the semester end-date, and a proctor is scheduled. If the student elects to use BYU's automated online final exam service (Examity), an additional week is needed to allow for processing this exam. This means the student has to plan to complete the course at least a full four weeks ahead of Heartland's schedule (about one LP).
Why is it Popular?
High success rate. Excellent price for A-G/AP/Honors courses. Courses are straight forward in their teaching style and students will be provided a fairly even mix of video and reading material for learning. Students do not complain that the course is too difficult to get through, nor are there many embedded links to take the student outside of the course. As well, the BYU office is extremely helpful.
What does my course look like?
BYU adds new learning content fairly evenly between video and reading material within each unit. Some Teacher-Led courses (world language, VPA music instrumental and some math and English) will have new learning content provided only through the instructor. If this is true for the course, students will be prompted through their account to make an appointment with the instructor when needed. Students expecting to do well on the final exam should watch all videos, read the provided lecture and reading material and attend all instructor-led appointments. Students are encouraged to take notes that they will have to study from prior to taking the final exam as once they order their final, they will be locked out of their course.
Who corrects the student’s work?
All work is corrected/graded by a BYU instructor who will award the final course grade.
Good to Know:
Students needing accommodations for their IEP or 504 plan should follow the directions on the BYU Support page.
Students are allowed access to their BYU courses for one year. However, our students are expected to complete their full semester course, including final exams, in time for the end of semester grade reports. Please ensure accurate pacing and verify the student’s course target date is set to completion based on our school’s fall, spring or summer calendar dates, depending on the date of enrollment in the course. Students may adjust their target dates from their Buzz account > Course Settings (not Account Settings).
End of Course Exams must be proctored and students may choose digital or printed exams for most courses. While access to a digital exam is fairly immediate after ordering, the printed exams are shipped to the school office where staff will first verify your home address and then ship the exam box to you. Please help your student to plan the semester accordingly and allow time for this extra step.
Platform will send out class information after your order is purchased in Procurify. Please allow up to three days to receive communication
