Spend some time looking through the resources below. Take notes as you read and watch.
You will need to grow:
At least two root crops: Root grown crops may include but are not limited to – kūmara, rīwai, taro, beets, turnips, parsnips, carrots; Evidence of kūmara or rīwai; and one other root grown crop Root grown crops may include but are not limited to – kūmara, rīwai, taro, beets, turnips, parsnips, carrots;
At least two seed crops: Seed grown crops may include but are not limited to – kānga, kamokamo, paukena, hue, watermelon, silverbeet, carrots; Evidence of kānga, kamokamo or paukena; and one other seed grown crop (including another from kānga, kamokamo or paukena) is required. May include but are not limited to – kānga, kamokamo, paukena, hue, watermelon, silverbeet, carrots.
START HERE:
Open a new google doc and name it: Cultivation 25471 (yourname).
Make sure you take notes and at the bottom paste links to websites used and write down names and authors of books used (for referencing).
Use resources provided and the books in the whare to find out the information you need.
1: Choose your two root and two seed crops that you will grow.
2: Use maramataka to find out when will be the best time to plant these crops. How does this relate to puanga/matariki?
3: Find out when seeds need to be sown in order for them to be ready to plant at the right time.
4: Find out what conditions your crops will need to survive and why.
5: Find out what you will need to do to prepare the soil for planting crops and why.
6: When you plant your crops, how will they need to be planted - in a line, in a group, facing the sun?
7: How will you maintain - water, fertiliser, mounds and troughs?
8: What tools will you use? What M`aori tools could be used? What will you do by hand?
9: Weeding - how, with what? how often?
10: Perst contol. What natural pest control methods will you use?
Once you have this information collected, think about how you want to present this information. Do you want to take pictures and videos as you do the mahi and put it together in a slideshow (you could voice over explaining what you have done and why). You could write it all up in paragraphs, you could add pictures or draw and add captions, or you may have a different idea - let me know.
