tuakana/tuākana - Older sibling/cousin of the same gender
teina/tēina - Younger sibling/cousin of the same gender
Whaea - mother/aunty
Matua - father/uncle
Mātua - parents
Mātāmua - first born
Pōtiki - last born, youngest
Ingoa/ whānau ingoa
Kuia - nana
Koro - grandad
Tāua - nana
Poua - grandad
Tungāne- brother of a girl
tuāhine/tuahine - sister of a boy
Kaihana - cousin
Whaea kēkē - aunty
Matua kēkē - uncle
Whakapapa words
Maunga - mountain that connects us to our tribal lands. These are linked to tribal identity and mana, these maunga link us to our tīpuna - Ranginui and Papatūānuku.
Iwi - Group or tribe that have a common ancestor - the iwi name is taken from that common ancestor. Eg: All Ngāi Tahu Māori descend from Tahu Pōtiki. Iwi is also a word used for bones.
hapū - sub groups, whānau groups within an iwi, linked by common ancestors. Hapū also means to be pregnant.
tīpuna/tūpuna - Grandparents and ancestors. they are always with us spiritually.
