SAT and ACT

College Testing after COVID

Test-Optional Admissions

Since the pandemic, most colleges, including all of Oregon's public universities, have become test-optional, which means that applicants are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores and will not be penalized for not submitting a score. Some colleges are test-blind, meaning they will not consider scores at all. Before registering to take a test, check with your prospective schools for their policies.

Should I take the SAT or ACT anyway?

Submitting a strong score may help set you apart from other applicants, and it may be used to determine your eligibility for certain scholarships or programs. If you are unsure or undecided, reach out to us in the Career Center or contact the admissions office at your prospective school and ask what they’d recommend.

Taking the SAT/ACT

When should you take a test?

If you need or want to submit test scores with your college applications, you should register to take the SAT and/or ACT between the Spring of 11th grade and November of 12th grade. Taking the test during 11th grade makes it possible for you to retake the test and improve your scores.

Which test is better?

Colleges accept SAT and ACT scores as equally valid. Learning more about both exams will help you decide which one is best for you. Go here for a comparison of the two tests and watch this video for some strategies to help with your decision. You may also consider taking both exams if you are applying to any highly competitive schools.

If you take the ACT, make sure you check whether any of your prospective schools require or recommend the optional ACT writing test.
